I traveled from London to enjoy a bit of catch up and lunch with a friend and this restaurant popped up on our Google search and thought give it ago. Sadly I wished I never gave it a try. We were treated so poorly handled way through eating staff member came to tell us that they are closing in 10 min but we can take out time and eat. That being said we thought we couldn’t order any more food thinking the kitchen is closed. Then ten minutes later the waiter comes back and says “I’m sorry but I have to give you take away boxes to take your food away we are closed” I mean who treats their customers this way. I have eaten in soo many restaurant in busy London and around the country even world and never heard of such customer service. Very appalling behaviour. I asked the waiter didn’t he tell us when he gave us the table that they were closing in half hour. If this was the case we wouldn’t have wasted ours and their time.I will not recommend anyone to dine there. Will make sure anyone I know doesn’t waste their money on such business who doesn’t value their customers. I could give a zero star if I could.

The service was really long but the food was exceptional ! One of the best Indian food places I eaten at in a long time. The king and queen platters are a great deal to try out all the fabulous lamb kebabs and the chilli chicken dry. The servers were friendly. The naan tasted great !

I will try to keep this short. This was my first and LAST order. Ordered a take-away through Deliveroo. My Order: X2 Chicken Kalimirch (Signature dish) x1 Chicken Tikka Masala x1 Chicken Fried Rice X3 Naan breads. Total = £45 Food arrived in just over 1 hour and was piping hot. As we made our plates, we realised the chicken was very tough, so tough that you could not cut into it without a struggle. It was basically undercooked RAW chicken. Every single Chicken dish, had the same RAW chicken. Called the restaurant and spoke to ADRIAN, who said nothing we can do, as it's a Deliveroo order. But also offered a refund if we bring the food back ourselves. So we went to the restaurant at around 9PM for a refund. ADRIAN who turns out is just a waiter, started checking the food (See photos). He thought he was clever, he got a plate and knife and fork and proceeded to cut the chicken from all the dishes in small pieces. Everyone in the restaurant was watching this waiter making a fool out of himself. He did not even notice that I was recording him. (See the photos) I have come to the restaurant to return the inedible food as agreed on the phone. But then Adrian had other plans, to waste my time and try to embarrass me. The overall experience was horrible. If I knew what the waiter was going to do, I would not have bothered with the refund. I stayed calm, obviously the idea was to provoke me. I let him act like a fool. Eventually a Supervisor called IVONA came over to the table and asked what's going on. As it was very unusual & immature behaviour by the waiter ADRIAN, who also did not even inform IVONA of our issue. He thought he was smart enough to deal with it himself, considering the main manager is away on holiday. She then proceed to help me in a normal human way and refunded me my money, but she could not refund from the till, saying its not allowed, instead she refunded me from the TIP glass. Lesson to learn. Read trip advisor reviews before eating or ordering from any restaurant. From the reviews, I have just learnt that management has changed. More than one person has complained about the quality of the food and the poor attitude of some staff. The Waiter ADRIAN had the audacity to act this stupid in front of his customers. There were a lot of people eating in. Also the chef was more than happy to send out blatantly RAW chicken. I also learned that the owner/manager was away on holiday for the week. Hence the staff are having a free-for-all. They are trying to ruin the business. Poorly run, terrible staff and carless management. This overly priced restaurant is certainly going down hill. It's a shame really. Papa J's used to have a great reputation. I got my refund, but the first impression and terrible experience that I had with Papa J's, makes this the worst Indian takeaway I have ever had. You've been warned. PS. The photos I have shown have been shot in the restaurant. You can see the food layed out on their restaurant table for everyone to see. With the waiter cutting all the chicken with a knife. funny enough he was struggling to cut the chicken with the knife. Never witnessed such stupidity. He was basically showing all customers that they serve RAW chicken.

We revisited to give the food a second chance after saying we wouldn’t go back as we felt the food isn’t the same after new hands have taken over the restaurant. We had to ask for sauces which no spoon was given for it. Our lamb chops still had raw marination sitting ontop and had to send back to get them re cooked. Felt the lamb chops were flat and lacked flavour. The chatpata wings do not live up to the classic ones the previous chef use to make- there is no crispy batter and the pieces used are too fiddly. The chilli paneer and chilli chips were nice but everything else that we ordered we felt was a let down. We have come to the conclusion that we just won’t go back.

Papa Js had been our favourite family restaurant to visit since 2013. Their Potato 65 and chill paneer were unrivalled. Incredible TBH. Over the last year or so the quality of food and service has gone. This is so sad- we travelled several miles each time just for the unique experience which seems to have been lost with sugary gloopy crap below average quality expensive food. Please improve!!

Delicious food. Have been going for many years and have never had a bad meal. Very helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to allergens and they have a good selection of vegan food. Good for takeaway as well as dining in. The masala fries are a must! Portions are generous.

We decided to try Papa J again. We have been long term customers since the original restaurant in alma street (which was awesome). The last time we visited, service was extremely slow to terrible and the meal was underwhelming but we decided to try again. On this occasion, we didn’t even eat. We were sat down with a lukewarm welcome. We noted the restaurant is in need of a refurb - look down and around at the decor and it is in dire need of an update. We both agreed the restaurant was also dirty (tables not cleared, floor not swept). After sitting for what was 15 minutes with no offers for drinks and feeling somewhat discriminated after other customers were being seen to in a much more attentive way (we saw no one), tables that had not been cleared or were looking like they would be cleared in a while and still with no orders for drinks or any attention, we decided to leave and go elsewhere. There were only 5 tables in total which were occupied - in a restaurant of 30 I would expect? What a shame for a restaurant we used to have very fond memories of. In comparison- we went to another indian restaurant, many more tables being served on the same evening and had drinks and popadoms within 5 minutes and had a lovely meal. No tables were left unclear and it was clean. It used to be a jewel in Luton (and there are few). A reason to go to town. It would be lovely if they could return to the fantastic experience of alma street and the early days whereby this restaurant really served up something different with class. Now sadly, it’s not serving up anything for us and the cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. I think we will stay elsewhere until reviews (which recently seem to back up what I have said here) improve again.

It's pretty clear that the cost cutting has affected the quality and quantity. Wings used to be trimmed and spicy. This time, not even the end of the wing has been removed and was overly sweet with what looked like chilli flakes thrown onto them. 7 small pieces of lamb in a huge amount of sauce. Rice was a very small portion. Been here many times before over the years so i was shocked with how poor it had become. I expected a lot more given the higher costs charged.

Wonderful vegan/ vegetarian food and excellent service. Annette served us and was attentive and made sure that everyrhing was perfect. Pity there was no cassava on the menu but understand that if people ask for it again they will make something special. Only downside is that they have so many equisite dishes we were not able to try them all.
