We had p previously been to Stones only once before for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Fast forward to early 2024 and when thinking about options for a birthday meal thought we would look at the menu options on- line - one quick view and we were sold. We opted for the lunchtime set menu and so glad we did Food - every course was excellent, well presented, and some amazing combinations and tastes - glad I opted for the accompanying wine flight as well. Staff - professional, helpful and friendly throughout and knowledgable about each course served Ambiance - good to see the restaurant was busy on a Friday lunch and a good atmosphere and dining experience throughout and any dialogue with the staff was easy. Value - Excellent value for money (£50) based on dishes offered especially as the 5 courses were also preceded buy canapés, amuse-bouche and bread appetisers. Great value (£30) wine flight to accompany as well. Overall a great dining experience

We came here for my 30th birthday and we both agreed it was the best meal we’ve ever had. We choose the taster menu and the service, food and ambience was sublime.Thank you so much!

This was my third visit and there were 3 of us. The food was as excellent as on previous occasions, but I do feel that, as the restaurant is or has previously been, Michelin recommended, the service lacked the necessary attention to detail. This is not a complaint but a set of observations which I feel the restaurant should be aware of......... We were seated in an alcove, the table was laid with two covers facing the wall, one cover facing outwards. Wrong way round. Aperitifs arrived, too swiftly followed by glasses of wine and before any food had been served. Hence the chilled wine warming up nicely when we had barely even touched the aperitifs. We were asked if it was a special occasion, I said it was a birthday. On previous occasions a birthday plate was presented at the end of the meal, nothing this time. Be consistent and if you're not going to do anything with the information, why ask? I was told the fish was sea bass which I ordered. A few minutes later a different member of staff came across and asked who'd ordered fish - why the need to ask when someone had just taken the order, that information should have been passed on. Anyway, turned out the fish wasn't sea bass, it was halibut - don't know what went wrong there? Empty aperitif glasses and wine glasses were not cleared. In the end I collected them all together and placed them at the end of the table. A server finally got the hint and cleared them. I asked for a tiny taste of pistachio ice cream to try before I ordered dessert. I got a full portion. None of this would really matter in a run of the mill restaurant, but that is not what this is and if it aspires to Michelin's status, this sort of thing really does matter. As I've said, the food was great and the staff very pleasant. But it has to be said that the service lacked the polish of previous occasions. I thought you should know. Sorry it's taken so long to write this review. I did write similar in response to a questionnaire I was sent following the visit, but no one ever came back to me.

Have wanted to try Stones restaurant for years now. We were there for the new winter 2023 menu. Lovely staff, great service, incredibly attentive. Amazing food, loved the canapés that were given throughout the courses, a lovely special extra touch. The salt-baked beetroot starter was insanely good, hitting all the taste buds of classic salt, sour, creamy, crunchy *chefs kiss*. The trio of pork main was also dreamy and my partner had the beef which he said was gorgeous. Desserts were great, and coffee lovely. We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Stones never disappoints. Lovely lunch today. A real treat and exceptional value. Worth the drive from Sheffield. I have never eaten anywhere that can compete on the excellent combination of beautiful, well presented food, good service and price. Trio of pork today was excellent! Thank you!

we were visiting the area for a pre Christmas break and thought that Stones restaurant looked ideal for dinner. We were most definitely NOT disappointed. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, the service was excellent and both my wife and I agreed that it was one of the best meals that we have had for a very long time. We will definitely book again when in the.Matlock area

Was given a voucher last Christmas by my daughters for lunch for two. Best friend and I went today for our annual Christmas meal out, looking forward to food as we had heard many good reviews . The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The whole experience was lovely. The food amazing, from the amuse Bouche to coffee and petit fours. The staff explained every course. It made our day out special. Would definitely recommend.

What can I say? There is only one Stones. From the moment you walk through the door you are treated like royalty. The food is excellent as is the service. The portion sizes are just right. Not overwhelming but not leaving you hungry unlike some other upmarket restaurants. We both had blade of beef. Not only was the beef delightful it was a generous portion.Stones is not cheap in comparison with other restaurants but considering what you get for your money it is good value.

Perfect, quite unassuming careful and caring service? And then the food, well say no more just perfection.

Amazing! We opted for the 5 course tasting menu for lunch, which once canapés/amuse bouche/ breads/ petit fours are added becomes 9 courses so made sure you arrive hungry! Staff were lovely and friendly, and didn’t look down on us at all though we were by far the youngest customers in there on a midweek lunch. All the courses were amazing, we couldn’t pick a favourite. They catered very well for having one vegetarian and one ‘regular’ of the tasting menu, and explained each dish clearly. There was also a vegan option available. Highly recommend!

Incredible food, never been to a restaurant that provides such amazing looking and stunning tasting meals. Most outstanding night in years.

Whenever we are in Matlock we always dine at Stones. The food and service are consistently good. On this visit, three of us had the scallops and one had the black pudding, all were delicious. For mains, two had the beef, one had the duck and the other had the lamb. All choices were excellent, well presented and perfectly cooked. It’s unfortunate that we live so far away and can’t visit more often.

Our favourite place to come. The service is what sets this restaurant apart. The food is good value for the quality of what you’re getting and the efforts of the chef. We will always return.
