Phenomenal! Everyone was super personable, the welcome was brilliant and it just continued from there. A real family-feel pub. The food was insane, I had the steak & Stilton pie and my partner had the steak & ale pie and the portion was amazing and the pie and gravy were brilliant. I can see why this pub is rated 5/5 on here.. the best! Wish I lived around here so that I could come here more often!

Great little pub, really friendly landlord and land lady, food is so tasty especially pie night, I have been looking forward to pie night for ages and DEFINITELY DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Also they do a fantastic roast dinner on a Sunday, super tasty

16 of us from my walking group booked the Barley Mow exclusively on a Wednesday afternoon for our Christmas lunch. The staff could not have been more attentive and friendly. The food was very good indeed, enjoyed in a fantastic traditional atmosphere. There was general agreement that we absolutely have to do this again next year!

I took my niece and nephew for Breakfast with Santa!!! All I can say is it was absolutely magical and the kids had a wonderful time. There was a helping Elf who was brilliant with the kids and Santa really took the time with them. He knew their names which blew them away and really added to the experience. There were extra little touches on the table (little reindeer food for Xmas eve) and Santa had gifts for them. All of the staff were just amazing and the breakfast was yummy!!! For anyone who hasn’t booked yet I would highly recommend this for the children.

Fantastic local pub that is friendly, charming and warm with a great array of ciders on offer. The grub is to die for, I had one of if not the best shepherds pie I have ever tasted!!

Great hearty food and a warm welcome from the host. We re big eaters and the portions of home cooked good quality food defeated us!

Stayed a couple of nights in Bonsall as a group of four couples to visit Chatsworth and do a bit of walking etc. visited the Barley Mow for food Friday night and then back for live music and general merriment on the Saturday. Food was spot on, no nonsense just lovely pub food. The band (The Skarantinos) were great and atmosphere fun. Staff so friendly, owners very hospitable even the locals are welcoming. Just a great place to come to and we hope to return, just wish it was closer to home!

Stumbled upon this pub looking for somewhere to eat lunch. A delightful, quirky pub. Only limited seating inside but just made the lunch rush. Came as a family of 4 on a Sunday. Great service and the staff are lovely ? the Sunday roast was spot on. Will definitely be back here again

I had the most delicious roast lamb Sunday lunch. Hugh was a very delightful young man who served us. A great friendly atmosphere. Definitely a place to revisit. Thank you for a fabulous experience. XxVegetarian options: My friend is veggie and she was accommodated with no fuss at all. It was not a problem.

We wanted a birthday get together as a wildly spread family, so stuck a virtual pin in a map and asked where we could meet up. The Barley Mow came up tops. As we approached we could hear beautiful and joyous singing from the kitchen... It only got better from then on. Not a blink at our family's odd request for a scotch and milk included in a round! Home cooking, very generous portions, great vegetarian options and an adult menu adaptable feast for our grandchild. Wonderful, relaxed, friendly and welcoming from the start... We'll be going again...and again! Penny and Ray

WiFi code is bestpubintheworld. For sure, would defy anyone to find better. Locals really friendly too. We had wide ranging conversations, ales, ciders. Food was top notch. Would give a 5 star plus if such rating existed

Great pub that has an alpine bar feel to it, worth booking in advance as it is quite small and fills up quickly. The size and intimacy makes for a great experience. Lovely vibe, very easy to chat to others or keep to yourself, however your mood takes you.

After a nice circular walk around the beautiful village of Bonsall near Matlock my friend and I stopped for food and a pint at the legendary Barley Mow. The pub is an outstanding example of the vanishingly rare , totally non-generic type, stuffed with nik naks that lend a cosy, intimate atmosphere. Although covid forced them to mothball the tiny chickenfoot brewery the selection of ales was excellent and Colette was gracious enough to provide a single main as we weren't massively hungry. The last time I had a pie that good (steak and ale with stilton) it was cooked by a michelin star chef in Nice and nearly bankrupted me! She and co owner Nick obviously work damned hard to provide a unique pub experience and thoroughly deserve the ongoing support of their loyal regulars and steady stream of passing trade. If you are anywhere near this area please make a detour, you wont regret it.

Excellent all round! My 2 year old was mid meltdown and the very lovely chef came out of the kitchen to give her an ice lolly to calm her down. The Sunday roast was superb, kids loved the Halloween decor and top class service. Couldn’t recommend
