The manager opened the locked toilet door whilst my wife was using the toilet. He used the master key to open the toilet door. Both him and a customer saw my wife in a state of undress. Atrocious behaviour and quite unacceptable. We'll be making a formal complaint to head office. We won't be going back. His apology was half hearted.

Staff friendly and service quite fast even when busy. Can be noisy with kids sometimes and the music is often debatable! However, most times we can chat easily.

The staff in here are really friendly and efficient, the sort of service that is lacking in a lot of places these days. It was a very pleasant visit for a coffee first thing in the morning and we will be going back again.

Very noisy. Too difficult to chat with my friends. Music too loud. Coffee and food is relatively expensive. Better value elsewhere. Good poins: clean toilets, female staff friendly and helpful, male not so good.

There is plenty of space in the old bank building.

Got my order wrong , complained , was told I was wrong, then when I asked for them to check on till I was asked to leave and not come back, shame most of the staff there are great 1 ruins it for the rest. I know drive few minutes extra and go to the one in affinity outlet so much better there.

You know what you're going to get in a Costa when it comes to their product. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Friendly, historic and comfortable hotel within walking distance of Bideford and providing great food. Good road access and car parking. Plenty of space for large parties or business gatherings. Beautiful countryside and interesting venues to visit.

Chose this hotel for its location and enjoyed our stay and would return if we come back to this area. The staff were helpful and looked happy to be working at The Royal Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, with views of the estuary.

We sat in the lovely Palm Restaurant. A really superb dining area , with both comfort and ambiance . Staff were very good and the Hotel appeared to be well up on staffing levels. The Carvery was truly excellent, quite the best food we have had in many years at a carvery ! Fresh and well cooked, nothing left over too long. I believe the Royal must have an excellent kitchen. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST RESERVATION

We 4 mature ladies who stayed at The Royal for 3 nights on a tennis holiday. We all had single rooms which would have been upgraded had the hotel not been full. The single rooms are quite small and the bathrooms quite old fashioned, but they were clean, very comfortable and everything worked as it should. Food was great and service was prompt and friendly, and the public rooms are spacious, recently refurbished and well designed. I would ignore the moans of the reviewers! We very much enjoyed our stay.

The Royal is a really great place to stay. The location is ideal for exploring the town and getting out to other parts of North Devon. The breakfast was plentiful and the breakfast area itself was beautifully furnished. The staff were also very friendly and attentive. The only thing that spoiled our stay, as others have already mentioned in previous reviews, was the location of our room. We stayed in Room 108 and it was directly above the kitchens and the kitchen fan. It was very noisy from 6.30am until 9pm each night and even drowned out the sound of our alarm in the mornings. We would be very happy to stay here again but would request a room on a different corridor.

Enjoyed a Sunday Carvery in the Palm Court. Absolutely brilliant, this was by the far best carvery we have had. Customer service was excellent - charming polite - nothing was too much trouble. We will return!

Lovely location, the refurbishment has changed the whole hotel, it really is a wonderful place to visit. We have stayed several times and enjoyed each stay. I understand some of the rooms are dated and may need some tlc but we personally have never had a bad room and always love staying. Reception are accommodating and try to assist if they can (room upgrade's available if the hotel is not full). Excellent service, good food and drink, right on the coastal path which is perfect for dog friendly holidays. The staff are friendly and made us feel welcome. Breakfast is always superb and the Merchants Bistro is very deserving of their muddy stilettos award. We cannot wait to return. Overall, 5 stars for the the service. food, comfort and facilities in our room.
