Visited this quintessential Public House after a visit to the Crematorium at Durham, May 11th 2023. It has been there 'forever' but allowed to run-down some-what, over the years.I was looking forward to a good hand-pulled pint in such an old premises, but found gas 'pumps' at the two Bars. Our funeral party was put into a dark / uninviting snug area with little space and natural light, along with food, tea and coffee layed-out in readiness. The buffet was really good, the staff very friendly but the decor was beyond poor.I went into the 'Snug' / other Bar area to find a much brighter, far more inviting room. A 'Snug' is usually a Bar area similar to the room we were put.Unfortunately, the gas 'pumps' were there too. This area is not a 'Snug' but a 'Bar' by definition. There is a large banner outside the premises, asking for a new Publican. For me, this pub is desperate for a massive make-over with some real / craft ales at the Bars, decanted from hand-pumps. The gas pumps could be used for other 'beers / lagers', but reduced somewhat. The main attraction should be (for me) should an inviting premises with true Beers and somewhere to enjoy a chat with the locals, listen to some music or watch a bit of tele. I'd be putting the Pool Table in the Snug, not in the Bar area.

Friendly village pub. Lovely open fire. Lots of seating and a beer garden for when the weather warms up. Definitely worth another visit.Only downside: people vaping inside?

Called in at The Black Bull for the first time tonight as we were passing and looked for a place serving food on Facebook. What a hidden gem! Beef and Guinness pie was packed with huge chunks of tender steak and my Peri Peri chicken breast was full of flavour and so moist. Huge portions sizes and very reasonable at under £40 for 2 mains, 2 pints of ale, a large wine and a fruit cider. Would definitely return!! Love to try the Sunday lunch!!

Booked for a Sunday lunch and was VERY impressed all round. Large portions, great cooking, helpful service, great food! Total contrast on a weekday evening meal. Slow service, forgot the onion rings and when they finally arrived were very greasy. Greasy noodles. Very dissapointing. We did get a reduction, and I hope it was just a blip, looking at the reviews.

A lovely little venue for food and drink, they did a great job of hosting the wake after a family funeral.

Had lunch today for the first time at the Black Bull. Food was excellent across the board. Value was also competitive with friendly staff. Will certainly be back soon

I cannot recommend the Black Bull highly enough. The service was excellent and the menu choice was really good, offering something for everyone, and the six people in our group, without exception were highly delighted. The chef is an absolute star as this was without doubt some of the best food I've eaten. I love desserts, so the highlight for me was the sticky toffee pudding. Will definitely be back.
