The food here is just slop for the tourist trade. Extremely disappointing. The waiters were friendly and attentive but that’s it. £198 I’ll never get back.

The staff are super lovely! So nice and attentive. Unfortunately the 3 stars are for the food. It tasted very average, not the best I’ve eaten and i can’t say i’d recommend but the environment is lovely and perhaps we came on an off night. The prawn toast was a bit for my group! The vegetable dumplings were okay! the pork dumplings were a bit bland. Try it for yourself and see!

What a great surprise. Not having been here for a few years I was not sure that it would live up to what I remembered: I need not have worried. It was a Friday evening so we were luck yo to get a table and very happy we did. The service is attentive but not over the top, friendly and professional. The food surpassed expectations and had wonderful and balanced flavoured. Portions are just the right size, we had five dishes to share and was just perfect, didn't feel stuffed but just the comfortable full feel. This is definitely a place to visit, relax eat and leave full.

Amazing food. Lovely ambience. Staff so attentive. Quick service. Would highly recommend this. Best restaurant in Brighton by far.

Gars is known for being the slightly higher costing, higher quality Chinese food of Brighton but I go so that I can knowing eat their food due to gluten allergy. They have their own gluten free menu which is clear and contains a few dishes I would normally stay clear from but I’ve had now a few times with no problem!

First time going after hearing very good things and cannot fault. Lovely service and great food - can’t wait to go back!

As the top-rated Chinese restaurant on Trip Advisor in Brighton and Hove I was hoping to be wowed with something a little special and a twist on the usual – but I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. The décor is dark and subtle and pleasant, if a little chilly inside on a cold night outside. The staff were all attentive and friendly. The wine good and reasonably priced in restaurant terms. For starter Sweet Potato and Aubergine Tempura. Sweet potato and tempura batter made for a slightly heavy mix and the aubergine was wet and stringy. My main, Sizzling Chicken with Ginger and Spring Onions, tasted ok but was nothing special. The ordinary onions in it were chewy. The two scoops of ice cream for dessert was lovely. When the ice cream is the best thing you taste in a meal then you have been less than impressed. So sadly not a great experience.

Lovely food. Went for the set menu and we weren’t disappointed. Would definitely recommend if you are in Brighton. We went early on a Sunday evening so very quiet.

I'm absolutely devastated to write this review. My husband took me to Gars the night that he proposed, 15 years ago. Since then it has become a family favourite - we supported them through lockdown with getting takeaways and thereafter took our two daughters! Sadly, we went tonight at our daughter's request as her 13th birthday celebration and were deeply disappointed. Our daughter has an anaphylactic egg allergy and in spite of booking and mentioning it in our booking they had no idea, we were told that the prawn crackers that they now stock contain both egg and gluten (I'm coeliac and one of the reasons we love Gars is because it's so gluten free friendly/allergy aware). We ordered our food and the wrong food arrived, I ordered singapore spring rolls which are marked as GF, they arrived with sweet chilli sauce, when I asked for more (having eaten it!) I was told it contained gluten; we also ordered quick fried chilli chicken and quick friend chilli ribs; we were brought quick fried chilli chicken and crab - we asked for the correct order, about ten minutes later the ribs were brought, we asked about the chicken and 10 minutes later that arrived with one side burnt. In the meantime (about 30 minutes after arriving!) we had to ask again for our drinks. When the main arrived my daugher pulled a hair out of our peking chicken. The waiter stated that there was a language barrier between him and the kitchen and since eating there I have developed ulcers in my mouth - an indication of gluten contamination. Thankfully, my daughter, who has an anaphylactic allergy as opposed to an auto-immune disease did not fall victim to their lack of care and their inability to communicate between the floor and the kitchen. Sadly, it has put her off ever going there again and so what was previously a family favourite is now a no go. The atmosphere was absolutely nonexistent - no music, just us on the ground floor (except for when the waiter's mum walked in and was told she couldn't sit where she sat and was sent upstairs), and then the undeniable ill-content of our waiter when things went wrong between him and the kitchen.

Good duck, average rice, exceptional service. Worth the visit.

We were alone in the first floor for most of the meal with another family coming in later on which was nice as it meant we could hear each other. The best bit was the service, it was not just good but delivered with a smile, the worst was the trip to the loos being a little much for those of us with mobility issues but it was doable

The food arrived luke warm, came a little too quick. If we went off presentation that would be fine but unfortunately we love food and me and my partner big lovers of Chinese. This was a big let down for usWe had duck, prawn toast, noodles, salt and pepper chicken and rice all very bland

Lovely service, great food nice and quiet - exactly what we wanted

Unfortunately the food order wasn't completed correctly, so the rice and noodles had been forgotten. This was rectified and our bill was substantially reduced as an apology. The food and service was so good that we were able to forget about the negatives.
