Got a takeaway - food was ok. The dishes are quite oily (I wish places would cook with less oil!) - but taste was decent enough. Good value. Won’t rush back - but good back up option for a one off

We stayed one night with friends ans kids, and we really enjoyed every minutes. It is a very welcoming hotel for families with toddler. Plenty of space to play. With a huge 200 acres land outside. The different areas of the building offer many options to relax, talk, eat, enjoy a boarding game. We felt welcome in this effortless chic space as soon as we arrived. The bed are very confortable, and on top of that there is no car noise at all. It was a nature immersion 2 steps from central London wish is very convenient. We will definitely come back.

For a soft opening, we had a lovely stay, Food was great, rooms are lovely and simple, staff are very friendly. I took my 2 girls(aged 10 & 12) for 1 night, can't wait to return when more facilities are open

Birch really is a marmite type of place, I’ve been to the Cheshunt one about 5 times and even got engaged there so I know what to expect, do not expect a normal hotel! We stayed at the Selsdon one for 2 nights. Here is a very detailed review! I want to point out what doesn’t work and needs to improve first: before you even check in they are very slow at replying to emails, takes about 2 days to get answer, they rarely answer questions on their instagram either and you even see people commenting “nobody is replying to my email”. Employ more people to answer emails and instagram questions Birch! When we arrived there was a list of activities happening that weekend (for now it’s basically yoga, pottery and a gym class), yet I had had an email from the gym manager to say the Sunday class I signed up to was cancelled, it was still on the list and nobody at reception seemed to be aware-imagine the confusion and waste of time this kind of disconnect creates. The room: I noticed they had dropped their prices online to compensate for the fact it was a soft launch, took 2 days to lower the price we were originally going to pay, I would have been very annoyed if I hadn’t noticed. They upgraded us on arrival and that was lovely. Someone said they have 80 out of about 180 rooms open, I think they will struggle at reception when twice the amount of people start arriving around 3PM. The rooms are basic but the bed was very comfortable as well as the sofa. The window in the bathroom didn’t close completely and one of the window (very old) panes was about to fall out and was annoyingly rattling at night. I think they will struggle when it gets hot or cold! The windows let all noise is so be aware that in the summer you are going to hear people chatting until the early hours of the morning and there is no AC (don’t say I didn’t warn you). Restaurant: there is only one open and they really need a cafe type place for lunchtime or like at Cheshunt the ability to buy sandwiches/snacks from somewhere. There is a sainsburys next door which I would use if I went with kids to get fruit etc. The food was excellent but there was confusion created by us ordering a dish in the evening to then be told it was only available at lunch despite the menu not indicating this nor the lady taking the order being aware. It’s bizarre how one dish only was only for lunch and everything all day as rhe the menu’s name. Outside terrace: the sun came out but there were no cushions on any of the seats, I went to ask at rectify they had cushions for the seats and the lady told me no then her colleague overhead us and said yes. Unnecessary confusion and really they would have taken the initiative to bring cushions out, how could that girl not have seen the cushions before or even double check. The snug is far too dark, they need to sort the lighting out in the evening. Dogs and kids: be aware that it is full of both. Dogs are supposed to be on leads, I only saw one on a lead in the grounds, there were no signs about this and a woman was shouting in reception that she had been “demonised” because she had left her dog of the lead and there had been some kind of incident with a family. The grounds are so big, they need to figure out how to sort the lead thing out because it’s being totally ignored. Also saw a child take a poo on the terrace and someone offer her dad a poo bag-classic Birch hilariousness. The grounds are beautiful and enormous and I hope they do amazing things with it (like build some stuff for kids to play so they are not swinging in the hammocks all day long). I don’t know how they will cope once all rooms are available, they need to train the staff better , there is unnecessary confusion that will lead to chaos with an increase in guests. So if you’re planning on going: read the reviews, expect loads of kids and dogs, no water, glasses, phones, TVs or kettle in the room (not sure how the reviewer from the times got one) a festival atmosphere and you’ll have a great time. Sunday afternoon once the sun came out, I finally was sat on a cushion and they put

Guys I’m torn on this review. We know soft opening means things weren’t going to be perfect but afraid you didn’t seem ready for that. Food was exceptional. Location was stunning. Rooms were dire. Many of the facilities weren’t open yet. We organised a pottery class for the kids then were told at the last minute it wouldn’t be possible which resulted in disappointed kids and annoyed adults.

Trying to be soho house of south London but unfortunately it’s just that and has a long way before it can be compared. I think the hotel confuses who is their main target audience, for a hotel that’s trying to attract more young professionals with coworking space etc there’s just way too many kids screaming running round everywhere. It felt like I was at centre parc, pram centrale. Maybe it is trying to be a family hotel but certainly misses the point as I wouldn’t have booked here if that was the case and I am sure a lot of mid20 30s prob would think twice before they come here. * Furniture are all very poor quality it’s from bad production of mid century modern and very far from the good quality furniture. Staff are lovely so cannot fault them, and some of them are still being trained (which is understandable as it’s a soft launch). * The rooms are not really revamped. What it is really just repainted and put in some new furniture. Lack the basic amenities; no tv, no fridge, no water, no coffee just completely lack what you would imagine even a 3 star hotel would have. The bathrooms are really just not up to standard I felt like I was staying in a hostel ( hostel in Europe has better bathrooms). * The facade of the building need major love and care. * Finally on price - Full price 270 odd pounds for the large room (we had a 45% discount on soft launch) it would not be living up to its full price maybe think about pricing strategy vs other 3 star hotels - therefore will not be coming back at all.

I recently stayed overnight here after a dinner with friends in their excellent restaurant called Vervain. I left a separate review for the restaurant which was superb. I had a great stay! its not the typical country house hotel (and still in soft opening). At Birch they do things a little differently but it is so refreshing... It is like an open house (that also has a local membership base) and as explained to me, they curate the most amazing experiences and activities for guests to take part in. It is all about getting involved, don't come here and expect to watch TV in the bedroom (there aren't any!). It is a building reimagined, not stuffy in the slightest and the staff are just 'real people' that actually seem to care. The grounds are vast and I only found out after I left that they are re-wilding an 18 hole golf course that used to be on site... I'll be back to explore more and get my pottery class in!
