The pub is great with plenty of superb food and drink options but the shop downstairs is an absolute gem for takeaway beers, probably the best range in the city including some excellent Belgian offerings. Highly recommended.

Great place, was told about it by a friend. Said where it was as easy to miss if didn't know it was there. Didn't have anything to eat, but the food looked good.Atmosphere was ace and it is a very quirky place, oh and the selection of beers and spirits in the shop is brilliant.Still trying to figure out what to buy. ??

We did not eat at the bar but did buy some bottles of Belgian beer in the shop below. Would definitely go back for food as it looked very good. Note the stairs to the bar are steep so if someone has mobility issues this might be an issue.

I have never experienced such rude staff in my life (only two of them were rude; the others were fine).The woman with pink hair was especially unpleasant. She kept shouting at people across the whole pub and speaking very aggressively to customers.This experience made me feel very stressed and anxiousOtherwise, the food was delicious and the pub was very cosy ?️ prices were reasonable too.

The stew was hearty and flavourful. But it qas a little too salty. If they could dial down the salt it'd be perfect. The pub is small, so be prepared to wait. Service is typical pub style service.

This place feels really one of a kind! Great atmosphere and definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately the kitchen was closed when we went which was a shame as the menu implied it was open as long as they were serving alcohol.The shop downstairs was really great with so many options and some great finds from local breweries.

The shop has an incredible selection of beers and spirits! Upstairs the bar is Old World, Game of Thrones vibe - wonderful to sit in and enjoy drinks! We ordered some great beers and the bread and dips which was delicious!

Always a pleasant place to visit together with the off licence. Good selection of beers but certainly not the cheapest in York. Small, so difficult to get a seat but somehow we always do suggest a visit if you are In the area.Further comment to response from house of trembling madness.I did not mean to say that their prices were more expensive than a like for like product merely that they can be expensive compared to other alcohol.for example I think that one of the beers was just under £5 for a third which may well be the cheapest of this beer in the country and could be worth the charge.its up to the consumer but it was not a criticism of a particular price.Parking: In the centre of York so no access.Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible
I highly recommend the House of the Trembling Madness if you're ever in York. This lovely pub is located upstairs, above the shop.Check out their daily specials, particularly their stews. I had their venison stew which was delightful.Vegans and Vegetarians - there are options for you as well. We also ordered the veg sausage with mashed potatoes and peas. Yum!Pro-tip: try to visit on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
