I booked the large tasting menu for myself and partner having read the great reviews. He had never sampled a tasting menu before and was looking forward to the wine pairings. On arrival we were told by the waiter that the wine pairing was not an option but he could recommend a couple of wines to go with some courses. This was not what we we had in mind. The restaurant itself was like a corridor and because of this lacked ambience. The table we were seated at was sticky and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned. On a positive note the food was nice but sadly we did not have the experience we were looking forward to considering the £290 spent.

My husband and I enjoyed the tasting menu as part of his birthday celebrations. It was our first visit and everything about the experience was exceptional. The decor, the staff, ambience and the food all exceeded our expectations. We even received a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival which was a nice touch. Thank you to all the staff at The Rattle Owl for making our experience memorable.

We went here for the 5-course tasting menu. First off lots was brilliant - the setting and the service was lovely, a great level of informative, attentive and friendly without it feeling stuffy or overkill. Perfect on that front.The food was delicious and I'd say worth the cost of the tasting menu. Really interesting flavours and lovely presentation. Really enjoyed the food.The reason for the 3 stars is purely the wine flight. For £35 we got 3 veryyy small glasses. The orange and red where okayish, probably around 100ml but the final dessert wine was probably 2 thimbles worth - no exaggeration. Leaving you wondering how on earth those three were worth over £10 each and a bit disappointed. I also think with a wine flight there should be a glass with every dish, whereas we had to buy an additional glass to go with the first two.Go for the tasting menu and the lovely service, but do yourself a favour and just buy a nice bottle of wine instead of doing the flight. It's a shame because it was nearly so perfect but the flight really was terrible value for money.

We visited the Rattle Owl for my birthday in July. Yet again we were delighted with the food and service we received from Adam Jackson and his wonderful team! Lovely atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, fantastic food and great wine pairing… what more could a birthday girl want.. Hopefully see you all again soon

A very good, well presented and very well prepared and cooked Sunday lunch. We had the three course, and had the beef main. It was very good indeed. The staff were very attentive, and courteous. Would recommend.

A must-visit in york! The Rattle Owl’s new Tansy Beetle Bar is just what Micklegate needs. A very flexible restaurant/ bar, we went for dinner but you can also just go for drinks and snacks. Love the concept of ordering lots of small plates, you can try a bit of everything! The staff were very attentive, from helping us choose from the wine list to advising us on how much to order, and were very knowledgeable on the content of each dish. We will definitely be back, and can’t wait to try the tasting menu upstairs.

We have visited the Rattle Owl on many Sundays and have recommended this place to our numerous friends. We visited today for Sunday dinner which was a 3 course set menu for £38. The starter and dessert were really good. The usually excellent beef dinner was disappointing. The Yorkshire puddings and roasties were almost burnt in parts. The beef, usually lovely and pink and thinly sliced was rubbish. It was a thick cut of meat, almost as thick as a steak you’d have with chips! Had to ask for a steak knife to cut it and they only had 1 steak knife which we had to share to cut the meat. It’s a very bizarre way to serve beef on a Sunday dinner. We provided this feedback upon payment and the manager said he’d remove the “discretionary service charge” which in hindsight I thought was amusing given it is a discretionary charge! We still paid it as the service was prompt but a disappointing response and asked if we’d be back. My husband will give it another shot and I’m sure we will, but we’ll go to the Whippet Inn (5 mins from here) for our next Sunday dinner as we’ve never had a disappointing visit. The Whippet Inn is a great pub and much friendlier service. Some of the staff at the Rattle Owl can be a bit frosty!

This may be fine dining but pretty disappointing. 4 course taster menu - 4 bites! smallest portions to the point of ridiculous. Attentive staff and nice decor but some over mansplaining. Meltons 10x better.

I was treated to a set lunch here by my sister and it was gorgeous. Beautiful presentation and cooking with a very relaxed atmosphere but attentive and friendly staff.It was very meat and fish based so I'm not sure how it rates as a vegetarian or vegan.

Had the 8 course tasting menu and it was amazing loved the way you get the Menu sealed so you have the choice to be surprised or know what is coming, we chose to be surprised and that was much more fun. Each course was amazing, we had a lovely evening.
