Excellent pub with superb traditional beers on. Folk Friday is a highlight and thoroughly worth a go.

Great cider choice and good beer choice. Black Sheep was very good. Salt Water Taffy Brass Castle was less to my taste.

I first came here after watching a game at York City twenty years ago and been a few times since. Boothroyd tells me that the Three Legged Mare was a hanging post for the times when having an opinion the ruling class hated was enough to hang you. Now coming back into fashion in the 2020's Woke State. Madge remembers it as a York Brewery bar but now Black Sheep .. two guest ales. I had a Half Moon Brewery Pale Ale. Long bar with another room to rear.

Fabulous open floor folk night (every Fri I think)Fantastic vibe, friendly & great beer to
A group of us visited here on 16th December, we were sat on a small table in front of the bar chatting and drinking. We had come on the train from Sheffield to visit the Christmas markets and to go for a few drinks and food. As women do, three of us went to the toilet together and went into the cubicle together as girls often do. TMI but we were chatting and stuff whilst using the toilet and one of us came onto our period whilst in there. As we came out of the toilet one of the bar staff were outside waiting to use the toilet. We washed our hands and I noticed a basket of tampons on the side. I told my friend to take one and save it for later as she did not have any as was not expecting to start her period. She said she would be fine and I again said take one and save it for later to which she agreed. We rejoined the group and one of the group went to the bar to order some more drinks. Another of the bar staff then approached the table removed only one of the empty glasses then came back for another and said "just to let you know my college thinks you were sniffing in the toilet. We won't kick you out but don't do it again" and abruptly walked off before we were able to even defend ourselves! We were then declined service at the bar! As you can imagine we were shocked and annoyed but thought to ourselves there are many other pubs in York so it should be fine. Oh how we were wrong!!! The next place we tried to get in to refused us entry. At this point we were tipsy but in no way rowdy or overly intoxicated. When we questioned this, the bouncer explained we had been reported to all bouncers in York as a group taking drugs. We asked how they could possibly have known it was us, and the bouncer showed us a picture the bar staff in the Three Legged Mare had taken of us. We asked if they really thought we were taking drugs and the bouncers said not at all but they still couldn't let us in. So overall, we were refused service in a pub and blacklisted from all pubs in York for three girls using the toilet together! The bar staff who was outside the cubicle when we left was also a girl which baffles me even more as I'm sure girls going to the toilet together is a universal experience. Thank you for ruining our trip to York with your false accusations. Will not be returning.
