Another gem in

Warm welcome in pub full of character; great to have real fire too. Old Brewery Bitter at 3 quid is such a bargain these days. Good to have card readers now; not sure if policy of no electronic devices is realistic in 2024, maybe could just encourage people to put them away rather than a total ban.

Lovely local pub would highly recommend if your visiting

Would have loved to have left a positive review but as our children (10 & 15 years old) were not allowed to sit in the pub and were only allowed to sit in the garden, we left. This was a Thursday afternoon at 4pm and the pub was virtually empty. Obviously this is not a family friendly pub.

Nice local. Love the pub

A great little pub that is still a proper English pub. No technology and friendly.

Definitely my first ever visit to this fantastic and traditional back street local. Both Jorvic and Paulicarus loved the friendly welcome. A front bar and two side snugs with real coal fires. Some outside seating in the rear yard where you find the toilets. ( bet the mens were once open air!) A Sam Smiths pub selling excellent Old Brewery Bitter. A no modern tech rule so no inside photos allowed...Jorvic might have cheated when the lovely lady was not looking. Would love it to be my local. Had a pack of the best prawn cocktail crisps ever, Lister's Yorkshire farm.

A really lovely traditional three room public house with a historic interior. Fires always going. The landlady is exceptionally kind and welcoming and makes every visit very pleasant. Definitely one of the best pubs in York.

Classic Sam Smiths wet led pub. Good cask Old Brewery, and very welcoming landlady made this special. Warm and cosy with real fires on a December day.

Charming historic pub with a great selection of brews and a friendly, warm atmosphere. The staff is very welcoming, and they have some really good pub quizzes. Will definitely visit again.

Absolutely feels like you are in the year 1851.. ..as it was when it was built as an original Coaching Inn, but now with electricity ...well worth a visit.....@ 10 minutes stroll from the City Centre.....this pub is packed with nearly all original interiors, and are becoming rarer and rarer ..nice friendly and informative landlady....as with all Samuel Smith's Pubs, mobiles, iPads, and laptops not allowed to be used inside the pub, but ok in the rear yard.....sometimes no bad thing in this full throttle world we live in.....

A really great little old fashioned pub. No frills, no sports tv, no mobiles allowed, just a pub, good (limited) beers, lovely staff, real ales, seating inside and out. Lovely.Parking: Parking in York is VERY limited.

Great little pub off the beaten track. Enjoyed chatting with Dru and the locals.

Small Sam Smiths pub set in a row of terrace houses leading to or from the river. It's one walk crossing the bridge at Clifford's Tower, along to Rowntree Park, then cross the pedestrian and cycle Millennium bridge and backup the river towards town. Three rooms that are proper old pub decor and a sheltered small garden. Usual Sam Smiths beers on tap and a rotating selection ofbottled beer. I had the chocolate porter, not too sweet and delightfully chilled on a 27 degree day. Food limited to crisps and nuts. Worth the walk for a glimpse back in time.
