This was the first time I visited this place. On arrival, we found out you could only order from the Christmas menu, which is very limited. The quality of the food was very poor, and what you would expect from a budget cafe and the serving sizes were small. No matter what main course you ordered, you got the same roast potatoes and veg to share !!! Even a choice of new potatoes would have been better. If you just want a low end meal then this is for you.

I came for the Game Evening with a friend for my birthday last night. The food was delicious - all 4 courses. The choices of meat were brilliant as was the quality since it was sourced from a local butchers. The variety of sauces/ jus and veg bowls added to the taste and balance of each dish. Brilliant gamey style red wine/ fruity jus. I'm surprised they had 2 duck dishes instead of one being venison?I had to send my partridge back as it was too rare for me. But that was quickly rectified with a replacement meal - not microwaved so that's a huge bonus! Also, the Argentinian Malbec (18) was perfect and wasn't acidic either.Atmosphere gets a 3 because the restaurant was just under half full so it was reasonably quiet. Service a four - food came quickly, but between course 1/2, a bit too quickly. Also, one of the waitresses spilled some wine on the table cover but was very apologetic. Music, room and decor are very dated. All the waitresses and the manageress were really friendly and hospitable. A brilliant experience with great British food.(See food descriptions on each picture)photo 1: Game menu2: argentinian malbec3) duck broth with pak choi + vermichilli4) guinea fowl with lentils with a port + cranberry sauce5) pigeon breast on moroccan cous cous with sultana jus and almonds6) partridge breast with red wine, bacon/mushroom and onion sauce7) chocolate truffle8) mango bavarois

4 of us booked the French evening. Four courses for £30 so excellent value. Onion soup, sweet and delicious , a choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts. My starter was scallops, juicy and plump. A main course of halibut left me almost too replete to tackle the tarte au citron, but I managed to squeeze it in. Everything beautifully presented and efficiently served.

Food was amazing. The staff were really attentive and friendly. We were in company with a chef who trained at Clarridges, who was most impressed with the quality of food and outstanding value for money. Its a must go to restaurant for all good food lovers

Food was great and will definitely be coming back again, although what made the experience worth while was the kindest pot washer I have ever encountered in my life he was so sweet and genuine and made mine and my families time there one to never forget!

I phoned yesterday to book a table for lunch for my wife and I today. Wonderful friendly greeting on the phone was matched with friendly yet professional greeting in person. The french onion soup was better than anything in France. The pork loin had an excellent farmer to match the brilliant butcher who delivered tender and succulent meat to Ashmores' amazing chef. All in all an excellent lunch at our leisure

At Ashmore's for a Christmas meal with friends. The Christmas turkey was really good for a dish which is difficult for restaurants to do well. The starter and dessert complimented the meal well. Worth the trip

Sunday Lunch at Ashmores is always good - delicious home-cooked meals without the washing up. Proper food made with love and care, and quality ingredients.I've been to this family-run restaurant numerous times and it's always a lovely experience; from the warm greeting when you walk through the door until you say goodbye, and they make an amazing Sunday roast! The goats-cheese & pumpkin soup starter looked and tasted scrumptious. The roast beef was cooked perfectly - super tender, served with a generous helping of all the trimmings and the baked vanilla cheesecake & profiterole desserts were seriously delicious.Great food, great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. It's a real all-rounder.My Mum already booked a return visit to celebrate a 'big' birthday in December.
