Delicious food & great

Malmaison restaurants have a fixed price menu (2 courses £20, 3 courses £25) but the staff here are very reluctant to let customers either have the menu or if they insist (like we did) are constantly trying to upsell to the a la carte menu. The head waiter was more concerned about how the bill was going to be paid (we had chosen not to charge it to our room). The food is okay at best - starters were Fall Cobb Salad (just a very ordinary salad really) and Salt & Pepper Calimari (a small amount of calimari sliced very finely to go a long way).Mains were Blackened Cajun Salmon and Pumpkin Ravioli. The wait between starters and mains was interminable and was only broken by the head waiter asking if we would like our bill. Our mains eventually turned up and my wife said her salmon was nice however the ravioli too thick, overcooked and lacked seasoning. The sauce could best be described as claggy.Although the desserts were very good the evening ended with them trying to overcharge us.There are better places within walking distance of this hotel.

My husband and I had an overnight stay on Saturday 11th Nov with dinner and breakfast. We have been here several times in the past and can’t fault anything. I have occasional mobility issues as a result of rheumatoid arthritis, the hotel gave us a free upgrade to a suite which made the room we had more accessible for me. The room was beautiful and spacious. For dinner we both had calamari which was tender and delicious. For mains I had the half roast chicken and my hubby had the steak, again both were lovely. The staff can’t do enough to accommodate any requests and were super friendly. Breakfast time we both had eggs benedict, my absolute favourite. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked. Also have to say my parents had an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast for their anniversary on Monday 6th November (their first time there) and had the same great experience. We have been to a few different Malmaisons but have to say the Leith one is my absolute favourite.

We stayed here for a couple of nights. Had an evening meal in the restaurant which we couldn’t fault and staff were excellent. The breakfast included in our package was also plentiful and catered for all needs. All the staff were excellent. The room was nice and only reason gave review 4 stars was due to room being very warm in our opinion. The location was great having parking too was a bonus. Bus and tram are close by to hop on to centre of Edinburgh. We would stay again.

The first thing to say is that the staff are so polite, professional and friendly. The food was exceptional. The best calamari ever. A special thank you to the excellent service from Nira, Erin and Chrula. Sorry if the names are spelt wrong, but the wines were excellent too.

Food was average, atmosphere was absent and the below average service didn't match the expensive food prices. If you are charging premium prices you expect premium service, they forgot one of our meals due to the timing we couldn't wait so she shared someone else's dinner, to be fair the manager gave us a drink to apologise but then forgot to gave the same person their drink. Altogether very annoying but there wasn't much staff could do about lack of atmosphere passed neighbouring restaurant which looked busy and was disappointed we hadn't gone there instead.

We were incredibly disappointed. We had tried to book earlier in the evening but the only available time was 8:15pm which is on the later side for us. When we arrived there were 3 tables seated that were all clearly finishing up. The last thing we wanted was to be the last table sitting there, so we skipped starters and ordered two steaks and a 500ml carafe of wine. The waiter tried to order us two carafes of wine, but we showed him the menu and explained that one to share would be enough… They didn’t have the merlot we had ordered from the menu, so we ordered another red wine. All of which was taking a long time and we noticed more and more customers finishing their meal and leaving. The restaurant was very cold and we noticed the couple next to us were both wearing their coats, we were discussing asking to move further from the door and the waiter serving us was clearly watching us talking and reassured us 3 times that our food was on its way. We hadn’t thought about it, but the meal did take some time to arrive. We decided to stay where we were and our steaks arrived. I had the fillet steak rare with mushrooms and garlic butter sauce and my partner ordered the rib eye steak medium rare with pepper corn sauce. Both steaks were delicious, however, the waiter approached us at 9:34 to tell us the kitchen would be closing at 10pm and did we want to order desserts. As previously mentioned, we had already skipped starters and a few mouthfuls into our main we’re being questioned about dessert? We said we would discuss it, and feeling increasingly uncomfortable, decided to also skip dessert as by this point we were the only customers in the restaurant and we didn’t want to keep the staff working for longer than necessary. We asked for the bill, and the waitress who was clearly listening into our conversation, told us to please not worry and to order dessert if we wished. We ordered a dessert to share, and asked once again for the bill. The waitress must have spoken to the manager of the restaurant, who approached us and asked if everything was ok. We explained that we were really disappointed as we had been looking forward to this special meal together and explained how rushed we had felt. He insisted that we order another dessert, but once again we just wanted to leave. Both manager and waitress kept asking if it was a special occasion which confused us, but we explained 3 times that we don’t go out much and had been really looking forward to trying chez mal. When we finally got the bill, the manager explained he had not charged us for desserts as an apology, and kept repeating that he hoped we would return. The bill was £108.00 for two mains and a carafe of wine. The experience was uncomfortable from start to finish. As we left, around 10:15pm, we walked past Fishers to see many customers still eating and drinking and we regretted once again our choice of restaurant. We live 25 mins walk, and by the time I got home I started to feel incredibly unwell. I woke up at 3am and again at 5am with sickness and diarrhoea. Today I will spend the day at home resting. Was any part of the experience worth it? Absolutely not, do not recommend.
