It was a second visit today and it resulted in a huge disappointment. So came here to say you should avoid this place if you expect good food as well as good service - but, I didn’t need to.So many same comments from others already ?Unwelcome, rudeness and ignorance.I popped in to get some pastry which I had before from a young friendly lady last time. This time I was unlucky served by the eldest lady, assuming she was Karine the owner. She was busy washing up and kept ignoring me for a while.I waited patiently until she finished and asked for 2 egg tarts.Portuguese-type ones.I know they’re called egg custard tarts. Then she said, “What??” with a slight anger in her intonation. Not only that she frowned at me!!And then she said they’re custard tarts, like telling me I said something wrong!Egg tarts? Custard tarts? They are the same!!!It’s a shame those EGG CUSTARD TARTS are tasty and reasonably priced.Thankfully there are plenty of good cafes where they serve EGG CUSTARD TARTS in Edinburgh.

Outstanding coffee and sandwiches are homemade and delicious. Amazing service and super friendly staff who clearly care about their customers.

I was looking for a quick and tasty lunch and I saw the fresh quiche in the window and thought I would give this place a try. This little French deli has a wonderful selection of original sandwiches, made to order. I had the ham, brie and chutney and it was wonderful, great bread too. The French woman who served me (presumably the owner) was fabulous and very friendly. An excellent quick lunch and I will be returning in the future.

Very, very French!Had lunch here - a freshly 'made to order' delicious sandwich with salad on the side. It might have taken slightly longer to receive but it was definitely worth the wait.Lots of authentic ambient products to purchase and a fresh counter with a selection of cheese, meats and olives. The bread and cakes looked tempting - another time perhaps if I'm in the area again.

Nice food but disappointed by the rudeness. I’m a volunteer bloodbiker, popped in for takeaway coffee and pastry, with my high viz and NHS badge, sat at an outdoor table, only one of the about six were taken. Owner came straight out and said takeaway means takeaway and so I had to move. Granted on reflection i guess I wasn’t taking away completely, but she could have been a bit nicer about it. When other cafes give bloodbikers free coffee, I thought this was pretty rude and unnecessary.

This is a great place to enjoy a cafe au lait and a gourmet sandwich with French cheese - it is also a really good French deli

I’ve been going here for years. Always beautifully made cakes and patisseries. Coffee strong and authentic. A little piece of France in Morningside.

French customer in Edinburgh

Disappointing - after a 1st visit which left me quite underwhelmed both due to the coldness of the French owner more interested in the old ladies in the shop (probably regular customers) than in serving me and the cake - a good looking French cheesecake which was pretty bland and way too sweet - I thought I would not go back. But I did, feeling a bit nostalgic of French bakeries. And once again, I was disappointed by the cake (almond cake) which was moist but just tasting of sugar. Not worth the hype!

We came across this place on our cycling tour around Edinburgh. Really loved the food and the atmosphere there. Karine is a lovely and caring person who really goes out of her way to make the customers happy. Her quince jelly is very tasty and definitely worth trying :-)

We’ve gone to Karine’s for years. Karine herself is a true gem of a person and if she’s working then your sure to enjoy your time here. The coffee is nice and food good, I just wish it was open earlier.

Rude owner with a really bad attitude who also managed to ignore the fact she kicked me. Luckily the food and tea were bland and overpriced though to save the visit...!

Pros: food is good and fairly priced for the quality but it ends there.Cons: The most dreadful customer service and atmosphere I've ever experienced in Edinburgh - which really says something.Took my elderly father here recently for his first time. We hadn't seen each other in quite some time and I assured him they made good sandwiches and it would be a nice treat.Unfortunately however, as I had previously been warned by a friend who lives next door to Karine, the staff really were cold and uninviting in their demeanour. We were completely ignored while standing at the counter with no one else inside, as the two ladies just continued talking to themselves. After fair few moments I asked if I could order which prompted a huffing sigh from one lady who came forward and asked what we wanted. Our baguettes were made within 5 minutes which is fair for being fresh, but there was no pleasant exchange or thanks at their end, just that same cold and uninviting body language.I honestly can't say whether the staff are just up themselves because they have that cutesy little French shop in Morningside, or whether they're trying to adhere to the grossly outdated stereotype that all French serving staff are rude AF, but for hecks sake, I've NEVER experienced staff over in France be anything but friendly, chatty, polite and delighted to welcome you in to their establishment.I can cope with it for myself, but for how you made my father feel so unwelcome, you've lost me for life.

Disappointing, ordered the sandwich with mozzarella and roasted veg with side salad. The baguette was very much the main ingredient and what filling there was, was pretty tasteless, all a bit bland and dry. The side salad was nice enough. I didn't have time to chew through both halves of the baguette so asked for the other half and the salad to take away. Got home and just the baguette and no side salad/olives! This along with a pot of tea set me back over £10. The young girl who served me was very pleasant, but I won't be going back I'm afraid.

Fantastic coffee, lovely pastries and a whopping collection of French cheeses and other yummy things.
