Food is amazing, best Japanese food I ever had. I also love the pickled side dishes (pickled plum etc). It must be hard to get in the UK and tasted great! Big portions and friendly service.

Came here once in 2022, and can say they have been consistent since then.Craved this food and was worth the trip. Portion size are pretty big and full of flavour.

It's literally the best katsu in Edinburgh, if not in the whole Scotland! The plushies are super adorable ~

Had one of the best meals in Edinburgh on my last day there, and it was the perfect ending to my trip!I ordered the chicken karaage bento, and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious! ?? Saw many mouth-watering pictures on Google beforehand, and they didn't disappoint. The chicken was fried to perfection; tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The side dishes included potato salad (creamy and delightful), shredded cabbage, pickled ginger, and tamagoyaki, along with rice sprinkled with furikake seasoning, a unique touch not found in many Japanese restaurants. The portion size was generous, more than enough for me (unless you're a big eater…)?The ambiance of the shop was cozy and adorable, decorates with anime figurines, manga, and cat plushies ?‍⬛In summary, generous portions, reasonable prices, definitely worth it! I'd recommend making reservations at least a day in advance, given the small size of the shop. ✌?

What a find this place was! I don't often call something a "hidden gem" but goodness I have only positive things to say about Kawaneko! We only visited because we spotted it in passing on the tram, so on our return journey we hopped off a few stops early for lunch. The café is tiny inside, with space only for four tables. This really lends to the cosy, cute and comfy nature of the café though, with plush comfy seating and an abundance of cat themed paraphernalia about the place (including some adorable, and some hilarious, books to read while you wait for your food)! The chef is Japanese, and the food he cooked was not just authentic, but some of the finest food I've ever eaten full stop. Seriously, I cannot praise the food highly enough, it was so delicious and it was cooked to perfection - I have *never* seen such a perfectly cooked egg in my life!!! We were well looked after on our visit and the owner was so friendly and pleasant to talk to. I'm honestly blown away with how good our visit was, my only regret is that I'm not local to Edinburgh so I can't visit again sooner! But it will definitely be a must visit stop on my next excursion to Scotland's capital!!! ?

The food was delicious and very affordable. If you want to try authentic Japanese food then get down to Kawaneko. The venue is small so be sure to call for a reservation or collection.

I recommend you book in advance. All the food was very delicious and authentic. It felt as though I was actually in Osaka. I love the hamburg steak. I want to try other dishes on the menu soon.!

I really can say that this is the best and the most authentic Japanese food in the UK!! Amazing. I know this place from my Japanese friend, he couldn’t recommend me enough of this place. Totally a gem. Karaage was super bomb!! Portion was huge and fulfilling. The taste was all balanced, the right crunch, super tasty sauce. The staff lady was so sweet and accommodating! When we were there, there were a couple of go show guests and since the place is small reservations are needed. Trust me and do pay this amazing cafe a visit and you will not be disappointed!

A homey and quaint Japanese cafe with great food! Would recommend booking beforehand as there’s limited seating. My bf and I shared the pork loin bento and it was delicious ? The portions are huge as well. Even though we shared one, we were decently full by the end of it. Will definitely be coming back to try other dishes and drinks.

Top notch Japanese comfort food. I wasn't sure what to expect as I'd never been here before and hadn't read any reviews, but I was blown away by the tasty, beautifully presented food. I ate a Japanese hamburger that was soft and super tasty with a lovely buttery sauce. The accompaniments were fantastic - perfectly cooked rice, tasty potato salad and the BEST carrots ever. I was very surprised just how good this place is and will definitely be back. Forgot to bring my phone, so no pics I'm afraid.

Kawaneko is truly one of the best restaurants I have ever been to! The food is so delicious and reasonably priced for its portion. I would recommend the karrage bento - the sides it comes with are great, and the chicken with the mayo sauce is just WOW. It is the most hidden gem in Edinburgh!! Its interior is cosy and Dawn always greets you with a friendly welcome. There are only 4 tables so definitely email/phone ahead to reserve! I can’t praise this place enough - I have taken my parents, my boyfriend, and any visiting friends here. It never disappoints :))
