Good choice for an afternoon tea with friends. Quite place, nice and warm atmosphere. It's near the city centre, near Holyrood. We have been on a Saturday afternoon. Good choice

We visited here for afternoon tea with my elderly parents last week, having purchased a deal through the 5pm website. This was paid for then the actual reservation made through 5pm's online system which obviously made it's way through to the hotel. In the comments section I made a note that one of our party is in a wheelchair and requested to be seated accordingly so that we were not causing any obstruction etc. On arrival we were shown to our table where neither had they removed the chair before our arrival to accommodate the wheelchair but they never removed it either when showing us to our table, meaning we had to move it ourselves. Not very good customer service. We were then served 4 individual pots of tea. I assume they waited for our arrival before doing any prep for the sandwiches & cakes as we finished the tea well before the food was served. We did ask for more tea only to receive 1 small pot for the 4 of us! I asked for more and received another 1 pot. The most disappointing part was the voicemail that was left that evening by Katy. Apparently there was a mix up with us leaving without paying and this was a request for me to call her back to make the payment over the phone. I was extremely offended by this as everything had been paid for in advance via 5pm. When I phoned back after hearing the message the next morning I spoke with a man as Katy was unavailable. I explained the situation and told him I did not appreciate the message that I had received. He said that they would not have known I had booked through 5pm to which I said that I failed to believe that as they had received the reservation which had been made via 5pm so they should obviously have been aware of 5pm's involvement, plus voucher codes had to be entered at the time of making the reservation. Even if they were requesting the voucher codes (which I assume they should have received on the booking notification from 5pm) this should have been what they requested from me in this voicemail, not asking me to make a payment. I also advised that we did not rush off after the afternoon tea, we had to hang around to wait for packaging to take the remaining cakes away with us, plus we said goodbye to at least 2 members of staff although I can't say that the staff were over attentive. I emailed the correspondence from 5pm as requested by the man, mentioning in the email of my disappointment receiving this message and also mentioned that we had definitely not rushed off as we even left a tip despite this not being the best afternoon tea that we had experienced and mentioned the wheelchair situation and having to remove the chair from the table ourselves but did not even receive a response. I would not recommend this place and won't return.

Lovely place, very tastefully dedicated , very nice staff. The food was good , a bit pricey but worth it. Not enough chips with the steak.

Went here for afternoon tea with my daughter, following a spa treatment. The staff could not be more helpful and the food delicious. My daughter is allergic to gluten and they were very careful to make sure that her food was as it should be. The scones were excellent and all of the baked goods were moist. The bread was even delicious! For my vegetarian option everything was just as good. We would most certainly recommend this and will return.Vegetarian options: A good selection of egg and cheese sandwiches.Dietary restrictions: Gluten Free option was perfect. The baked goods were moist as they should be and even the bread was soft and enjoyable which is very difficult to find.

We stayed at the hotel (Now a Marriot), and decided to eat here because it was late. The food, service, and ambiance were amazing. While the menu is not extensive (if you want that, go to Cheesecake Factory), we loved and enjoyed our meals, and our waiter was an absolute gem. We enjoyed our dinner meal here and the hotel!

Food is fantastic. New management, new menu. The scallops and Cullen are fantastic but the beef cheek curry is the real star.

One of the best Indian food lately.

My family of four came here and we had breakfast three days in a row and it was AMAZING!!! Not only was there a lovely breakfast but the staff were extremely friendly and considerate. We also used their hotel and the rooms were clean and well maintained. I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a nice hotel and great food! From Milla, age 10.Kid-friendliness: A member of staff gave me and my brother a free hot chocolate everyday!

Staff great but food was greasy and dry, very uninviting

The reviews here are pretty discouraging but I guess they were made during a different management. Our experience was great, the food itself is wonderful, beautifully presented, rich of flavour and with generous portions. There's a nice wine selection too. The service was friendly and efficient.

We were accommodated near the MacDonald hotel on the Holyrood Road and considered it a convenient location for an evening meal. Attempting to make arrangements on-line through the web site were difficult as the menus would not display. (Even today, I am unable to access the Menu on the website. Perhaps I am incompetent). I telephoned the restaurant and there was no reply, so I telephoned the hotel reception who advised that they would email a menu. This did not arrive in my anticipated time scale, so I visited the restaurant and collected a copy of the menu to show to my other guests at our accommodation. We decided to take the opportunity to have a meal at the Surf & Turf. We were appropriately greeted on arrival at around 1900 and noted that there were about 8 other people dining with some 8/9 table free. On asking if we could dine the matter was immediately put to a manage who made great display of assessing the bookings for the evening. Their attitude seemed almost one of annoyance that someone should seemingly walk in off of the street and expect to dine with them. After a few minutes the decision was made that there would be a table available, and we were seated. The table staff were attentive and polite. The menu presented well and there was a good selection of food to choose from. The meals made for pleasant eating and were much enjoyed by myself and my companions. We were in the restaurant for just over an hour and couldn't help but note that very few further clients were dining. In short, the restaurant could not be described as busy which might have justified the manager's air of superiority, but the attitude displayed seemed inappropriate for the situation. Had the web site been appropriately working, I am sure that we would have manged to review the menu on-line, booked a table and receive a more positive reception on arrival. On our return to our accommodation, I noted that the email with the menu attached had arrived whilst we were in the restaurant. I would return, if in Edinburgh in the future.

We had to wait long time before somebody came before getting seated. Actually they were not sure to get seats but the restaurant were actually empty. The bottle of wine isn't presented and served and opened, just put on the table. The Ceasars salad was completely over garlict with only a bit of green salad chicken and fish(?). Veggie burger was completely dry such as the bun no sauce - uneatable. Other meals we had (6 persons) bit to salty but ok. Not a lot to eat main dishes are mainly starters.

Cocktail menu a little limited. Decor and interior has a nice high class feel to it. Some of the staff where great and really engaging. Food was good on the night but nothing memorable. Would be 3 stars but the gluten free afternoon tea was excellent.
