stopped off on way home from Wales mid afternoon,so the place was quiet, food great & reasonably priced, good selection of beers etc, gladiator cider really good 8%?,dogs could come in,in the section.staff friendly, nice beer garden by the looks of it,this for the sport.would Defford pop in if travelling up this way again.would have given a 5 for atmosphere, as it was quiet, but expect its good later on & weekends.thank you The Abbey??

One of our party had a chicken tikka masala which was burnt to the bottom of the dish, rice was dry,nan bread was slightly bigger than a rich tea biscuit.my burger was dry and rock hard,2 people ordered lager which looked like it had been standing for a week (1 got theirs changed, other didnt want to make a fuss)it was really flat, glad I won't have to travel all that way again..

Went for meal family - children have picture to colour but nothing to colour with ? Don’t give if you can’t for fill.Quite a few staff on duty with management.Observation only two young lads were running around serving - from bar to taking orders, clearing tables & bring food out. There seems to be change of management? If what I witnessed not good leadership.Thankfully two males one with glasses the other with goatee beardPeople were served correctlyEven made remarks when paying -“Your tick of all tricks only you and other lad doing it all”To hear who I believe to be manager“I wouldn’t say that”Tip for management - Rude never pull down customer when praising a staff member.Roll your sleeves up and motivate All your staffYou are not there to take the glory your staff give you the glory well two did and was working lot harder than the rest of the teamOh just so you knowThat was 100% observation as well as having 40 year in the hospitality

We booked a table at the Abbey 2 months ago - the first time we have eaten out on Christmas Day - a real treat - we thought. We couldn't have been more wrong! We were sat in the corner opposite a pile of boxes , junk , unused Christmas decorations and an old dog bed . A little off putting - but we hoped the food would make up for it . How wrong we were ! Half an hour after sitting down at our designated table - decorated with a piece of wrapping paper and a spring of artificial foliage ( classy!) a woman with a clip board came over to check our order and told us that we must pay the £100 for our food before we had eaten it ! An unusual request and concerned us . Our starter arrived after an hour - it was tasty but the soup was tepid. We sat waiting patiently for 1 hour 40 minutes when my partner asked the woman with the clip board how long our main meal would be . She went to check for us and came back stating that the nut roast was not ready and took longer to cook ( longer than turkey ? Not when I cook it at home!) I was shocked , very hungry and frustrated - after all they had had considerable time to prepare . I said to the woman that I understood why they had taken the money beforehand because we would have left if we hadn't already paid ! There were 2 men serving - one smartly dressed , one in casual clothing , filthy trainers and a cloth and cleaning bottle hanging out of his pocket . I told the woman that they were obviously short staffed as they had got a cleaner to help serve - she stated there was no cleaner serving . She disappeared again - I assumed to chase up our order - wrong !!!!! The next thing we knew was this oaf of a man with a beard - the 'manager' who slammed £30 on our table - ' your £30 deposit you need to leave as you have disrespected my staff , adding , your barred ! ' disrespected ? I was simply stating what I had observed ! I obviously protested -but this man was aggressive , threatening and I will not tolerate bullies , nor want to return to such a awful establishment ! He needs to listen to his customers not to exaggerated claims from his staff ! So no Christmas dinner , £100 out of pocket ! Intimidation ! Disgusting ! Thank you so much for ruining Christmas ! Seemed to see fair amount of staff on, plus management. Been to the Abbey few times, so to observe very clearly. Only two members of staff were working. Doing - bar, taking food orders, clearing tables, bringing food out. They were 2 male staff (one with glasses other goatee beard) both young At one point management and the other staff in a group talking behind the bar. Not impressed with the management, did commit to lad when came on to the bar to serve. Management clearly wasn’t happy with my commit. To be honest I really do not care. There was also a hygiene issue with body odour. Well done to the two young lads. As you both were working so hard. We want to give only you both a tip. But not to be split with other staff

We booked a table for 7 people to enjoy a “Festive Menu” as a pre-Christmas family get together. What a mistake! Our table was reserved ready for us. Drinks ordered and all looking good. We were presented with the standard menu, to be advised that the Festive Menu was not available. Given that we were just 1 week away from Christmas, this was somewhat disappointing. No worries, there’s plenty to order from the normal menu (we thought)! No steaks available! OK, let’s go Gammon… nope!! Burgers / Pies / Fish…. Very festive (not)! PHONE AHEAD TO CHECK WHAT IS ON / NOT ON!!! What we did eat tasted good, but a far cry from the “Festive Menu” that was advertised to be available. There appeared to be a staff shortage / inexperience, but the staff were friendly and were working hard.

The waitress was rude and served a main meal with starters .The main meals were awful with inedible food .Could not understand what went wrong.Normally quite good.Complained to barman who appeared to be manager and who seemed unconcerned with no apology or offer of reimbursement. We will pass this onto our friends and it will be a long time before we return.Parking: Plenty

Specifically reviewing the takeaway service they are offering. AVOIDI called an hour after ordering. Gave me order number and they said they didn’t have that number. Confirmed it with the food on the order. He said it was due to be picked up any time.Called back 20 mins later to be told it had been picked up and should be with me shortly.Called back 20 mins later as it should be an 8 minute drive. He said it had been delivered, yet on my just eat screen it hadn’t moved from the first stage of “we have received your order”.Bloke on the phone was apologetic but didn’t seem to know his a**e from his elbow. He also confirmed this had happened many times before. Says its a just eat issue but I’m not so sure the fault lies solely with them:Also phone was cutting out so having to call back and music blaring which person on the phone was asking to be turned down; to no avail.Long story short, hungry. Tried to support an independent business in Shrewsbury but would have been better off with maccies as at least it arrives.

So this is now the 2nd time I have taken dad for sunday lunch here. 1st visit I wasn't impressed but dad enjoyed his beef. Went yesterday, and it was horrendous. Dad thought he had been given a pork chop instead of sluced beef as it was so thick and full of fat and gristle. Mash was tasteless. Infact we left our plates full of food, so sorry, we will not be going back. On a good note the staff are lovely and helpful . Just need the kitchen looking at. Sorry

2nd chance was trying to give the benafit of the doubt.Big mistake the first trip was palatable in comparison. Rude bartender was just the for starters would have been better if they started what they did have to offer first 3 meal choices were not available should have given up then. Will not be back 3rd time will not be a charm.I assume they will have a smart reply to try and cover thier inept service.AVIOD the garented disappointment and waste of money.

Food was bang on! I've never ordered a steak and actually got it how I asked it to be cooked, not only that it was delicious! Food arrived quickly and service was awesome! There was a great lad I think called ollie... serving us, what a guy! Thanks ill definitely be back frequently, for the food but mostly the service.
