We had an overall good time at the Scallop Shell. This nautically-decorated seafood spot in Bath had great appetizers—we loved the oyster and fish cake. The fish and chips was decent, we loved the tartar sauce and the cod was good, although the chips left something to be desired. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding! Our host was fantastic and worked some magic to push back our reservation as we were running late. Our server was kind, although we would’ve appreciated more helpful guidance with the menu.TL;DR - We enjoyed this seafood spot in Bath. The apps and desserts stood out, the fish and chips was just okay.

Such good food here, and easy to get here from the Bath Spa train station. Service was good as well, and the retro music was good. Additionally, we mentioned about the not so fresh prawns, and one of the staff came to explain and apologise. Anyway, it is a must visit and must try place. 2 thumbs up!Parking: Not many parking spots around, but walk here as it is very accessible.

We read the positive reviews and booked here for dinner. Before I delve into why we rate this place a 2 for our visit, I’d like to say that the food was lovely overall. The main reason why we gave a 2/5 is due to the overall carelessness and frustration that even a little effort would have made it a 5 star experience.Positives:Food was cooked very well, great flavours & the man who served us our wine was obviously clued up on wine - very professional.Critiques:1. This one was absolutely outrageous - a homeless man came in to beg, and mind you this is a proper sit down restaurant. He got to every table, EVERY SINGLE TABLE begging before the head chef noticed that he was there and told him to leave. The waiters were looking at him and said nothing, this brought everything down for us. I have never seen this before so was quite shocking to be honest.2. £3.50 a piece prawn served with the poo sack.. the actual prawn itself was cooked well but gritty as anything, so brought everything down. This was also the starter which is supposed to set the tone for all other meals, so we didn’t expect to eat some poo for £3.50, especially at a specialised seafood restaurant.3. One of our sauces was served to us in a chipped bowl, seems like a very obvious mistake and could have easily been avoided.4. Scallop served untrimmed - I would half understand if both scallops came untrimmed, but one was trimmed and the other one wasn’t, so clearly an oversight.4. Plate wait - it took around 10 minutes for anyone to clear our plates, we had a mountain of empty plates sitting around and no one came to collect them, the place wasn’t busy so not excusable.5. Bay leaf in lentil curry - this is not hugely an issue, but I thought it was careless considering the price of the dish.6. Took a very long time to sit down as hostess was away, there was a queue of people waiting to be sat, all had reservations.7. Unseasoned chips.8. Fruit flies were everywhere. We appreciated the head chef saying thank you and have a good night, as well as kicking the homeless man out, but should have all been a front of house job. Again, carelessness.Won’t be returning unless price point reflects the experience.

We visited Bath on a day trip, and were really put off by the crowded, rather tacky restaurants available in the center of the town. We looked up online and found The Scallop Shell.. we had oysters, fish and chips, and beer. It was the best fish and chips I have ever eaten— lightly coated, and the fish was fresh and flaky. The oysters were fresh and delicious.. Even the tartare sauce was out of this world.. I highly recommend this restaurant..

Ate full plate of raw seafood and all were fresh and delicious. Unfortunately, it is not easy to find places where you can eat raw fish without thinking twice and I left full and satisfied.Staff was very kind and welcoming. The location of the restaurant could be better in terms of views but I rather focused on the food ?

Amazing dinner at this Bath restaurant. Probably the best fish and chips of our two week vacation to the UK. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent. Service was very attentive.

A group meal went great. The food was fantastic, the starters and mains were amazing. Service was great despite a large group of 8. Enjoyed the haddock and home cooked chips so much, best fish and chips I’ve had in some time and washed down with a nice Chablis and accompanied by mushy peas and curry sauce. Will be a back ASAP and just annoyed it took me so long to visit.

What a treat! After a week in England with good seafood this one wins hands down. Salt cod cakes and shrimp cocktail are amazing. The fried haddock was excellent and large portion. No room for dessert but a very happy patron?

recommended to me by a athlete of mine from the national athletics team, now a university professor in Bath, we decided to celebrate our daughter's second place at the Pentathlon World Championships. We had to wait about thirty minutes because we hadn't booked (do it!) The mussels were excellent and the fish served au gratin was excellent, the desserts were superb. The cost of the dinner, not low, is justified by the quality of the products. Courteous service where an Italian representative of the city of Aversa stands out. We hope to return soon and with the same sporting and culinary results!

We had fish and chips, and found the chips underdone - disappointing. It was also the most expensive of all the fish and chip restaurants that we tried during our UK trip. What was the most disconcering was the second of our two servers - the bill was 46 pounds and I gave her 50, expecting change. She asked if she could keep the change and not bring it back to the table. I was shocked - to me the change was 16 pounds, now perhaps she meant the 4 pounds in coins but one should not be asked if one can keep the "change".

Wow, what a great find! Exceptional food, great service, friendly and helpful staff and quality ingredients. We had the oysters to start followed by the scallops, the oysters were so good we ordered more before ordering our mains. The fried pollock which was recommended by the chef, was absolutely delightful, the batter was light and crispy, the fish was chunky and so fresh it fell apart. The chips were 10/10. The half lobster was bigger than we expected and tasted amazing. The mushy peas had so much flavour compared to what you would normally expect. Would highly recommend and would definitely come back again.

Great food, service and atmosphere. The menu is small but the food is high quality, delicious and reasonably priced. I highly recommend the oysters, they were big and delicious. The chips were cooked absolutely perfectly and the fish tasted really fresh and lovely.

Great meal, good service. Beautiful fresh seafood and crispy fishcakes for starters. My only criticism is because of the stone floor the table was very wobbly and the chair was uncomfortable. However, this took nothing away from the quality of the food. Would still go back!
