I visited House of Tides with friends for and chose the 7-course tasting menu. We opted for the wine pairing and the additional cheese course too…we wanted the full experience. The venue is located on the quay within a beautiful old building. There’s a bar on the ground floor while the restaurant is on the first. On the way in and out, the bar area was empty, so lacked any atmosphere for first and last impressions. The service was ok, everyone was informative about the food and drinks, but I think we were served by so many different people, it felt less of a personal experience versus other tasting menu experiences I’ve had. Not one server asked if we had enjoyed the food, or checked if everything was ok when the whole table didn’t eat one of the desserts. The food was a mixed bag, I enjoyed four of the seven courses, both desserts were not nice and couldn’t finish either of them (I’ve never not eaten a dessert in my life for context), so was disappointed. Most of the wine pairings were good, and the sommelier was very informative.I expected to be wowed by the experience and the food here, but both three friends and I were underwhelmed by both, particularly considering the nearly £270 per person bill.

The tasting menu at House of Tides is a gabulous gastronomic experience rather than a normal meal. We enjoyed a memorable dinner for a special occasion, but if you are a big eater then you may need to get some chips on the way home.

Very interesting building. Very good service. The dining room is very spacious with most tables by the windows. The menu was well elaborated with a special note to the black truffle croissant and the rhubarb donut dessertz which were top of class.

Dinner.Celebrating 10 years and still going strong.A multi award winning restaurant on the banks of the Tyne,in a Grade I listed 17th century merchant house.Looks can be deceiving as when we looked through the window earlier while passing,it looked empty. We didn't realise that was the bar and the restaurant was upstairs. It was a good job we booked as it was full to capacity. The ground floor is like an old pub where you can have a pre-dinner drink. The dining room is on the first floor, with a view out over the river. The menu is a simple choice.Well, it's a set five course tasting menu £98.Having said that, they have changed it slightly as there's also a seven-course from February £130.Snacks were a Jeruselum Artichoke Dashi Custardand a mouth-watering Croissant, black garlic, winter truffle.Sourdough Bread with whipped toasted sunflower seed butter.Salt Baked & BBQ Swede *Goats cheese mousse, hazelnut, kaleWhitby Crab, butternut squash, coriander, curry & spiced granola.Salt Aged Beef Tartare with Lincolnshire poacher.*Served with a Beef Fat Brioche on the side.Hen of the Woods, smoked & pan-roasted,truffled potato puree, hazelnuts & chive.Star of the show,Main course Rare breed pork, belly & loin, bok choy, onion & black garlic.Desserts.Yorkshire Rhubarb *Dark chocolate & orange crémeux, coffee & praline.*These were dishes that Head chef Scott Black let us try before the New February menu, and they are sure to be winners. The kitchen technique is good, and the service was charming, attentive yet relaxed, and friendly.Strong Michelin star cooking and reasonable value.

(This experience was a few years ago - so I can’t comment if portion size has changed since - this whole review is based solely on the tasting menu - cannot comment for a La carte)(Also maybe one important note - I was not drinking - if you pair the wine with the tasting menu I can only assume you’d be more full up than I was)I’m afraid I can’t agree with those saying just because it’s tasty food, that these joke size portions fill you up. I’d be lying if I said the food isn’t amazing, it really is great food, but the portions ruined it for me. I left still hungry and contemplating getting food from somewhere else, after we must have spent over £200 on food that’s a bit of a joke. I know fine dining portions are small, but I did expect them to get maybe a little bigger as we got closer to ‘main dishes’, but instead it got to the point where we were sat there in tears laughing, they would have 3 people come out, serve it super nicely, tell you what super special food it is, to just reveal yet another dish, which on a huge plate reveals a single bite size piece in the middle. I laughed more at the portions than I have at a comedy show so at least I got comedy out of it.I have nothing bad to say about anyone who works there, everyone was super professional and nice, only the portions were the problem, however as I went for food… That’s kinda a huge problemAlso for regular Michelin goers who are more used to portion size like this, even my father who has been to numerous Michelin star restaurants said it’s the smallest portions he’d seen too, and was laughing just as much as me having my first ‘Michelin’ experience. So please even if you expect them to be small, expect smaller.

Food was great but the service has definitely dropped. Went for the food and wine pairing and it was rushed, staff even getting it wrong.

My first Michelin star experience was unforgettable. You walk in thinking “this won’t fill me up” and leave completely satisfied.

This was a return visit for a family celebration and we were all eagerly looking forward to a night of superb food. What a great disappointment!! We were first of all taken upstairs to an almost empty restaurant and shown our table BEFORE taking our coats. We had to ask for pre dinner drinks which were taken at the table. The food was nicely cooked but the helpings were meagre and served on cold plates. We had to rely on the doorsteps of sourdough bread to keep us topped up. We had to ask for the wine we had ordered whilst we were half way through our lamb course. The whole evening was soured by lack of attention. Sorry Mt Atkinson - we have been great fans of your food but WE WILL CERTAINLY NOT BE RETURNING.

Menu superb, and taste excellent. Wine flight was one of the best we have had and matched superbly. Service was also excellent. Perhaps only slight issue was it felt a little rushed compared to last visits, but we could have slowed it down. Overall brilliant.

Quite simply perfect, great food , amazing Sommelier Matthew . Really welcoming and attentive staff. I can’t recommend more highly. Highlights…the eel, lamb, fig bread and goldschatz from the wine flight. I was a lone diner on a work trip and came out having had a great experience. And ordered a bottle of one of the wines after the meal as every drink complemented every mouthful of great food. Lovely place.
