I live abroad, but always seek out my favourite chippy when I am visiting...at least twice! Hands down, best fish butty I have ever had. Fish is massive, batter is crispy and cod is moist and delicious. Staff in take out are pleasant and ordering was quick. A+

Only about 25 customers in but waited over 30 minutes for main course to arrive after starter plates removed. Food was excellent and the set meal good value, includes bread and butter and unlimited tea or coffee. Stick to the tea as coffee was the worst and cheapest I have ever tasted.

Great food, spacious dining area, very helpful and polite staff, crockery was a let down, had something stuck to inside of milk jug. Tea cups had to have stuck on bits of food picked off the inside by me, cutlery needed a wipe.

Absolutely beautiful fresh food , waited until our 3rd visit to leave a review, just to make sure it was consistent!! Definitely didn't disapoint, no complaints at all , we had 2 servers both lovely ladies , only got the name of one. Which was Susan, so friendly , with today's cost of living etc , I think the quality and portion size is such good value for money ! The fish is amazing , thick, white and tasty, everything was fab , please don't change a thing !! See you soon ,

Disappointing take out experience from an establishment that over the years has provided excellent fish and chips.Overcooked ‘grey’ fish, luke warm chips, generally not a nice experience at all.Sadly if I’m ever visiting my home town again I won’t return to the once great (but no longer) Mermaid.

Called in at the fish shop as not been for a few years. It was fantastic from the moment we walked in. The gentleman that seated us was so friendly and helpful. The same gentleman took the order and about 15mins later our fish and chips arrived. The staff throughout the meal where good we got asked if we wanted to try a cocktail on the house. The gentleman that seated us was funny halfway through he brought the desert trolly round saying he was tempting people. On the whole great experience and would go back.

Have used this shop twice over last week the service was ridiculously slow the prices of fish and chips are outrageous 7 pound for a fish that is only half the size it should be on the second occasion I ended up leaving without even ordering I was second in the queue and was stuck there waiting 20 mins and gave up. The staff didn't seem to care. If they think I am going to pay double the amount fish and chips should be and have to wait that amount of time then they are living in dream land I could of understood it if they were busy and the que was out of the door but there was only one person before me stood there like a stuffed dummy only to get robbed blind for doing so . Sorry but not again. Sick these days isn't it. The Great British Fish and Chips has become a Joke.

If I'm honest my star review is probably a bit harsh due to the circumstances and time of our visit. The restaurant was busy due to a large party and I hadn't booked but we were seated straight away waiting properly 10 mins for our order to be taken due to the big party but this was ok as I said I hadn't booked.Order was taken and we waited for the food...... when it arrived itWasn't what we ordered. The staff came back and changed it to what we ordered.... the fish was tasteless and the chips were soggy.I'm putting this experience down to the fact it had a busy party and it was midweek I will visit again just to see if this was the case. The staff were lovely it was busy and the service was fast... unfortunately, the food just wasn't as nice as I would have hoped

Was in yesterday, was busy but the service was amazing… we were served by a young man named Franky and he was really professional lovely personality really knew what he was doing. Haven’t been in a few months as it was outdated, food wasn’t great and was rather 1970’s the new revamp makes it a great place again I believe it’s under new management and it’s certainly proving to be a big hit! I’ll be back again for sure

Heard great things about the restaurant after a recent refurbishment and decided to pop in for lunch whilst in the area.Quality fish and chips, freshly prepared, good portion size and chip shop curry sauce to die for. The restaurant looks great, very welcoming, open, bright and with background music playing makes for a very relaxing eating experience. Throughout my visit received a 5* service from Solos and the team. Will definitely visit again when back in the area and would highly recommend to others especially convenient for shoppers/families visiting the White Rose too.Cheers to The Mermaid team for the first class dining experience??Parking: Plenty of free parking spaces making it very accessible for customers without having to worry about additional costs when eating out or parking time restrictions ensuring you can enjoy your food in your own time.Kid-friendliness: Very welcoming for families and kids. Good menu options

Great evening meal here tonight. Good to see the revamped decor and updates to menu. Served by Frankie, very attentive. Fish to die for, with crispy light batter. The Salmon fishcake was generously sized and lovely fresh salad. I also had the carrot and coriander soup starter, again delicious, full texture and very flavoursome. Highly recommend. Will be coming back with the rest of the fam for sure!

Bit quiet but it was a odd time, looks like it’s been refurbished, great bar area with posh furniture, food was very good apart from curry sauce ordered by mistake so was replaced with super mushy peas. Happy dinner will be returning.Parking: 50 ish
