I often eat here with family and friends. It was very busy for a Monday evening because there were a lot of Christmas parties, but we still received excellent service from the young man who we believe is italian. The food as always was very good. My only negative comment would be that not all of our initial choices were available. This does seems to be a frequent issue. But I have to say this is not a big problem because there are quite a few options on the menu, and we were happy with our second choices.

Had high expectations for the bear unfortunately the experience fell well below par, bacon was burnt in the hunters chicken leaving a burnt taste, notified staff of the issue with the bacon and they got replacement bacon but this still remained overdone. fried egg white was burnt, surprisingly the yolk remained runny. Service was slow and staff appeared nervous during visit. The building itself is very glamorous and would probably be nice as a hotel but the restaurant and noisy busy road made it feel like they were just polishing a turd.

Booked a table for 19 to eat at4.30 but got meal at.5.30 .10 had steak I even put name next to the pre booked food all steaks were rock solid .the fish meal was fried so it was very dark and very well done .very tight on chips hardly any onion ring only 2 on a plate I ordered from the new and ordered a eat mess dessert only got some sort of trifle and was told it wasn't on new menu but I ordered everything from new menu so no 19 people were very angry and my daughter who was celebrating her 50th upset so I will not be recommending THE BEAR ?

Whilst booked in for a meal at 1245 for 3 of us the time was put back 1230 and then when we sat down and ordered our meal we were told there was an hour wait for the meals!Service was good and staff very attentative. Just a shame of the timings on the meal

We hebben hier met een grote groep 18 personen gegeten.Het eten was uitstekend, de bediening heel goed en de lokatie bijzonder.Food & drinks: Met de groep 18 pers. Hadden we een eigen "kamer" . Wel zo gezellig.

Went for a Sunday roast so can’t comment on the hotel. Very friendly welcome and good service. Sadly the roast was not great. Very fatty beef, the carrots were well past their best and the stuffing was more like

Very poor service. food was over cooked, we had salad on a hot plate, so we had cooked salad, it over an 3/4hour for starters and hour to get the main course which rubbish. Staff we friendly. If we had been told there was a wedding going we would have gone somewhere else.

We had two lovely meals and the service was friendly and efficient. We have been here before and will return.

The bar/restaurant area is very nice, the staff are great...friendly, efficient and bubbly. Good menu looked very nice but unfortunately we'd arranged to meet friends elsewhere for dinner so didn't eat on site, (looking at the menu, we wished we had eaten in). Nice decor and some interesting history. We stayed during the recent heatwave in a really nice room with balcony and thankfully a fan supplied, but because we had to keep the window open all night, we were kept awake by some people being loud outside in the garden, (or on other balconies?), until approximately 2am, so not a lot of sleep was had. We commented about it at checkout and we were told that other guests had mentioned it also. There is a function room on site and it could've been overspill after the function had ended, but something to note if booking a room here, and it kinda spoilt our stay a 'bit'. That was the only issue really, but maybe it should've been dealt with by the staff at the time? Looking the recent reviews, it happened the night after we stayed as well, so it must be an ongoing issue? ?Rooms: Of a nice standard, with a small balcony overlooking Bear Island and the river offshoot. Bed comfy enough, with all requirements for a short stay. Nice bathroom, but would've preferred a walk in showerNearby activities: Market town of Marlborough is 10 miles away, with The Avebury Stone Circle a bit further, both are must sees if in the areaWalkability: Great proximity to the town of Hungerford, which is lovely and mostly flatNoteworthy details: Lovely location, but be aware of the potential noise from on site functions

Bedrooms, dining rooms and public areas rather grubby and threadbare, breakfast was ok and receptionist was enthusiastic, but in general not really very good. Service for evening meal was dreadful, we booked a table but sat for 20 minutes and no one came to take an order so we left and went to John of Gaunt which had a good menu and good service, we also noticed another couple who had walked out and came into the John of Gaunt. The restaurant needs a manager and properly trained and supervised waiting staff. The place needs a good clean.

The new chef has made an impact on the food quality. I think management should put large square umbrellas in courtyard.

Dave Cato of Citroën UK organised a lunch for retired colleagues and the service and food were both good. We’re coming again in November, so a repeat of good food and service will be welcome. All the best Pete Byrne ????

We managed to get a table in the bar but most were reserved so try to book excellent meal as usual.
