Brilliant spot for lunch and a drink - the place just oozes charm and history. If only the walls could talk! The food servings were generous and delicious and came out super fast and fresh. It was very busy so suspect bookings for weekends would be needed - we did. Well worth a visit.

Very historical, surprisingly good

There was a time, a few years ago, when the Standard stopped being our first choice for a beer or bite, but now it’s a contender every time. The food is great (fish pie is superb!) but the service is just properly friendly again. Our server, on a busy Boxing Day lunchtime, couldn’t have been calmer or more helpful. Why only 4 stars? Sometimes it can be a little bit chilly. But thanks, we had a great time!

Chicken liver parfait is very average. Game pies were epic. Quality of the main courses was superb. Service was the most lacking element.

Great Sunday roast, fantastic old building, nooks and crannies, huge open fire. Uncomfortable chairs but hey ho comfortable chairs would not fit the ambience of the place. A must visit pub, I loved it. Went together with family and had no complaints at all.

We held our wedding reception here - champagne and smoked salmon blinis followed by fish and chips. It was a perfect Friday afternoon sitting out the front of the pub in the sun. Zsolt and the team went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly, the service was really exceptional, and we couldn't have asked for more.

Beautiful historic pub and building with lovely service and great food. Perfect day trip from London, I highly recommend the walk first and then warming up next to the fire inside!

We enjoyed a lovely lunch in this ancient Inn. The decor and huge fireplaces with little secluded nooks evoke wonderful historic nostalgia. The staff were all lovely, super helpful and cheerful. Prices rather on the high side ie £22 for a lunchtime pie...nevertheless it was delicious and very filling.

We went for a late lunchtime visit and it was very busy, it died off after 2pm though. The food was excellent, the fish and chip portions were huge. All the food was tasty and well cooked. Service was good especially as it was so busy upon our arrival. We did book a table so that was well worth it. The old interior was a fascination for our friends who had not been to a British pub before.

terrible experience!!went in for lunch with friends expecting decent food and service received neither waitress got my main course wrong and forgot a drinks order which I ended up going to the bar and getting myself and was then charged twice for !! my friends ordered liver pink came well done and when my partridge eventually arrived it was dry went to pay bill and was overcharged for wine because cost had gone up on new menus !! owner then came and said in front of other guests we were not welcome back without asking why I complained -he should have saved himself the bother perhaps he should his time checking on the quality of food and service because without the history and atmosphere of the building he would be out of business with this shoddy attitude!! enter at your peril

900 years old. The oldest pub in the world. Unique atmosphere and service.

We chose the Royal Standard for my son's birthday to experience the atmosphere of an historic pub, but unfortunately we had to pay the price for this. The food prices were the most expensive we have found outside of fine dining in London and were not value for money for ordinary pub food. We booked for Sunday lunch at 3.00pm, but some items were already sold out and the roast dinner we had was at best luke warm except the Yorkshire pudding which was stone cold. I presume all the food had been sitting in the kitchen for a long time since midday getting colder until all gone, especially as the roast potatoes were too hard to cut open without force. Although I prefer a long delay between courses to chat, I don't think it was intended for this, as the serving staff appeared to have difficulty coping with a full pub on a Sunday. However, the oysters for one were on the house, as they had run out of the other starters and the desserts were nice, but nearly £200.00 for 1 other starter, 4 roast dinners, 4 desserts and 2 pints, 2 medium wines and 2 lemonades, is the most I have ever paid anywhere for similar. Full marks if you want to go on a ghost hunt in an old country pub and have a pint by the fire, but I wouldn't eat there again for any occasion, especially not a special one.
