Wonderful welcoming pub ?

This a lovely building with great potential, apparently it had a roset at one time .But sadly it's been let down by it's management and staff. The food is over priced especially the cold ham egg and chips. It was not presented well ,the chef did not care about the eggs .on a good point the sausage and mash looked good. The service was not good as it should have been ,not asked if we enjoyed meal .Also limited menu ,no specials like in most pubs or hotels. I refused to pay the service charge because of the lack of it. I have spent over 50 ys in the hospitality industry and been in many pubs , restaurants and hotels across the country, many have been up to standard some not.I also know it's hard finding good staff who are passionate about their job and enjoy what they are doing . Hopefully things will improve so you can get better reviews. GC

Staying in the Holiday Inn across the road which the pub restaurant is run by the hotel which was very disappointing the food was cold. The manager was not very helpful. We will be eating somewhere else for the next four nights.

Not my sort of place, mainly because they had nothing for me to drink. Only ale on hand pump was Doombar, and nearest to a drinkable cider was Strongbow dark fruits, which I consider Strongbow spoiled. At this point I must say my 5 mates, not real ale drinkers, were quite happy with the place, and indeed spent 1/2 a day there while I revisited The Hippodrome and The Ship.Understand they have the occasional disco.Trying to be fair...but this is my review

Can't explain why others have given this place a decent review. I'm giving two stars and that's generous. The beef was tasteless and full of gristle. The rest of the plate so overwhelmed by the taste of cloves it was impossible to eat. Really horrible. And then there was the service. It was politely clueless. For example, a bottle of wine was delivered with no glasses. They did come when prompted but the bottle was not open. When prompted it too got opened. But both the lack of glasses and the closed bottle came as a surprise to our server. That was small potatoes tho compared to the awful roast, thin gravy, gristly meat, overwhelming taste of cloves. Pretty horrible actually and totally not worth the money. As an addendum it's worth saying that the fish and chips weren't much better. I'd advise anyone not to go. Really, don't. Awful.

I really like visiting the Red Lion when in the area, it’s my second visit and we drove from Nottingham for the day especially to visit Grantchester. The food at the Red Lion and the service is really good. On this occasion I did notice a few minor points which made it look a star in my review. The enamel serving wear they used is really past it’s best, it’s chipped and the coating has come off revealing metal? underneath, those dishes should be thrown away as it’s unappealing visually and ut makes me nervous as to how clean the dish can be when it’s corroded. The toilets especially the walls have cobwebs and spiders yes a country side pub will have bugs but these had been there for a while. I’m not a massive fan of spiders so perhaps I was more aware but a hoover would have been able to reach the walls and corners. It was a warm day and the doors were open which was lovely, the pub is in a gorgeous location, but it meant we were pestered by a very irritating fly or three, when you are eating it’s a bit unpleasant to be constantly swatting away flies who are tying to sit on your food. I’m not saying that it’s the pub’s fault but the food isn’t cheap and I doubt many people would want to eat food that flies had been landing on. Remember to resister your vehicle when you park to avoid a fine.

I wish I had read the reviews before booking. This pub has no repeat business, because it's a rip-off. The food portions are embarrassingly small. I paid £25 for the tiniest piece of cod I've ever seen served up (a portion from the supermarket cut into a 1/4 I except). It lay on a thimble size of tinned broad beans. Honestly, it was so awful. I noticed the only other people there were from a nearby conference centre which is probably their passing trade. I would not recommend this pub, the description is highly inflated.

We had a fantastic dining experience here a few weeks ago, with some of the best meals we've had in a long time. However, during our recent visit, we were quite disappointed. We ordered the same dishes that had impressed us before, but this time it was a completely different story. I opted for the pork chop, but to my dismay, it was terribly overcooked and difficult to even cut through. The pork was accompanied by a mound of greasy, soggy vegetables & my plate swimming in a pool of orange-coloured oil from edge to edge. The excessive amount of oil was quite alarming, and I half-jokingly expected a protest from Extinction Rebellion to unfold in the garden. After expressing our concerns, the apologetic barman kindly offered a replacement meal of our choice. However, we declined as my wife's chips were still raw inside, and we didn't want to risk another disappointment. Later, we learned that the regular chef was on a day off, and unfortunately, it showed in the quality of the dishes. I fail to understand how 1: The temp chef would think that this was an acceptable dish to leave their kitchen & 2: Why did the waiting staff not pick up on the fact this dish was not correct before it even got to our table? A piece of advice: If you plan to dine here, it might be wise to find out who's cooking before placing your order!"

I'm not sure why there are so many Excellent reviews?? We booked a table and were seated very quickly outside. However, we're seated directly next to a rat bait box with an overfull bin next to it, as well as uncared for shrubs and plants, not the best of starts!! We waited for a server...... and waited..... and waited! 2 groups who came in after us were seated and served before us! In fact one of the tables had their food brought to them before we had even been aknowledged by any of the staff and the other table had their drinks brought to them, at this point we were not even acknowledged or asked if we wanted any drinks. After waiting for about 15 minutes we decided to go to the bar and order for ourselves. The lady behind the bar was rude and grumpy and it seemed like we were putting her out by daring to order from her. After a short wait the food and to say it was a disappointment is an understatement. I had the burger which was soggy and tasteless, the "burnt onion" resembled a soggy tulip and as for my partners Steak Sandwich it was bland oily and cold. The fries were over salted and cold. I cant understand how anyone would rate this as excellent, unless it's just the lunch time which is terrible. I hate to leave a bad review but anywhere that charges £18 for this sorry excuse for a burger and £4.50 for a pint of syrup diet coke really should deliver at a far hire standard than I experienced today. Will not be returning.
