Young girl serving us was lovely. We were given one wrong order which made the right order late. Charged for both, has since been paid back. Salt encased sea bass was the only thing really good. Rest was mediocre. Tempura coated soft shell and oysters were oily. Burnt my coat on the wood burner in foyer. Fire guard recommended to management. Would not go back.

In Padstow for my wife’s birthday and a visit to this restaurant was a must! Again, we weren’t disappointed! Served by Molly, our evening was fantastic! Molly was personable, knowledgeable and in tune with what we expected. The food, as ever, was first class.

Tough choices here as much of the menu appealed and it is a large choice of dishes. Excellent bread and olives to start. My wife had the turbot/scallop ragout with basil and Vouvray. It was finished with cream so it was quite rich but delicious. I had the excellent iberico ham. Chalk stream trout next for my wife which was perfectly cooked and also a much more sustainable choice over salmon nowadays. I had the hot shellfish selection which was on the whole excellent. The only negative was the razor clams needed more of clean as a bit gritty. Also came with a healthy garnish of chilli and garlic which just needed another 15 seconds to cook the garlic a touch further. Seasoning across the savoury courses were generous and my wife thought edging on too much salt but I didn't think that. Too full for any proper dessert but a small selection of ice creams was a perfect way to end. Compared to our regular RS restaurant in Winchester it's a definite step up in price but also in levels in service and ambiance of room.

The food at The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow is always top notch. This time we weren’t disappointed! Our server, Daniel was fantastic. He remembered us from a visit a year earlier at a different restaurant where previously worked. He’s a credit to the restaurant. Highly recommended.

As part of a few days away, we visited Padstow. As we are avid fans of Rick Stein's televisual offerings, we decided to give his flagship restaurant a go. Hey this isn't a cheapery eatery, if that's your dynamic I guess this won't be for you....but on other hand, if you appreciate fine dining, beautiful surroundings, excellent personal service and a slow taking of time ambience, this is what you pay for. We were more than most impressed.. Amazing sea food experience from a unique restaurant with a massive diverse menu. This was so exciting to see. Many options such as sea urchin, crabs, lobsters, trout, cod, mussels etc freshly prepared. Hospitable hosts from front of house to waiter. Excellent wine selections. We opted for 4 courses and weren't disappointed, in fact completely and utterly overwhelmed with the quality and taste of what was served. We recommend the cold serving sharer of shellfish for starters. A combination of lobster/crab torte and braised brill for mains. Everything was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed a magical evening. We booked a few months in advance to get the date and time perfect, this is well advised.

Myself and my partner booked this meal as a Christmas gift to each other, the building and decor were beautiful. When we saw the Maître d' on entering and leaving he was friendly and warm, the food was amazing and we could not fault that one bit. However, throughout the evening we were left feeling uncomfortable and at times ‘looked down on’ or ignored by the staff, I myself felt very anxious. no one made conversation, everyone seemed annoyed, no one asked us if our food was okay And we watched wait staff argue amongst themselves and then half way through our meal a waiter pointed at my partner in front of the entire restaurant and accused him of leaving a carrier bag full of steak at the entrance of the restaurant. We definitely did not leave the carrier bag full of steak but we were questioned about it multiple times by multiple staff and began second guessing ourselves, they also did not ask any other guest if the carrier bag full of steak belonged to them so we were also then left feeling embarrassed in front of the whole restaurant and singled out. Near the end of our meal we had a waitress called Linda who was amazing she made us feel relaxed, she was friendly, attentive and funny- I would say if it was not for the Maître d’ and Linda we would have left feeling quite fed up about the service we had received especially as we had travelled 6 hours for this to be a special memory for each other. The food was beautiful and at least we will look back and laugh in the future.

This was our second Christmas Eve at Ricks and it didn’t disappoint. Such a lovely restaurant and very friendly staff. We had the bread and olives to share followed by cooked oysters and Cod and lobster chowder which were exceptional. I had the Padstow lobster which was delicious as I’m a proper seafood junkie and my partner had the Indonesian curry which he said was very tasty. Superb food and excellent service

We booked the Festive Feast. We decided to arrive on the 23rd December so we could enjoy Christmas Eve. The food good a bit oily but overall Ok. But the Christmas Day dinner came! OMG The starters were ok but then Christmas Dinner arrived It was the worst food I’ve ever had. Apart from the turkey everything was burnt. I asked the waiter would he serve this to Rick Stein? The maitre d came over and apologised and offered the wine I had ordered would be taken off the bill. I told him I would pay for the wine as it doesn’t make it right. Unfortunately he took the price of the wine off the bill. For me I wasn’t happy, I was complaining about the quality of the main Christmas dinner which for me was why I booked this break. We decided to cut our visit short, when we went to pay our bill we told him about our Christmas Dinner he had the audacity to ask if we had the early or late sitting to which I replied “ should that even come into it” Totally disappointed paid a lot of money for an experience I would like to forget!!

Goodness me! Where to start with this review. I have lived in Cornwall for the past 5 years and visiting for around 20 years. For many years I have wanted to go to Rick Steins Sea Food Restaurant. This Christmas I had a chance. Two relatives coming to visit both with a love of food the same as mine. So, I booked a table and off we trotted for lunch. I will try to keep brief and if Trip Advisor will allow do by bullet point! • We were greeted by one girl on reception at 1300 who was trying to cope with booking us in, answering phone calls and taking our extremely wet coats to hang up. She was plainly stressed and trying to do too much in one go despite a deserted restaurant! • We were guided to a table by a slightly flustered waitress who eventually turned up but that took a while because the receptionist had failed to take my cousins coats as she had to answer the phone. • The table was fine as per my request by a window. I don’t like sitting in the middle of anywhere so would prefer to be on the sides. • Very efficient initially offering us water for the table which as the driver I was looking forward to. • The boys had Bloody Mary drinks but they were not asked how spicey they wanted them though one did and was assured they were not too hot… they spent the whole meal waiting for the ice to melt to make them slightly more drinkable. This is personal taste but should have been asked about by the server. • The menu is huge in fact so huge you kind of wonder if the kitchen has the capability to deliver so many different things fresh .. • I am now going to move into a review of the dishes we orde”red; o Sashimi – tasty but I am an expert on this having lived and worked in Japan for many years. It was slightly too thickly cut, was of average quality and perhaps the waitress could have checked out my understanding of Sashimi before giving me a patronising lesson on what was what on the plate. o Sardines for one of my friends. He declared them delicious. o Soft Crab for my other friend.. we had agreed to do a bit of a share.. He is very polite but when I tasted THE rather large amount he gave me I was horrified! The so called Tempura batter was not cooked so the small amount of soft shell crab was well undetectable under the not cooked, soggy batter. • On to the main courses… o Well, after about 25 mins of waiting for our main courses (as were our cluster of 3 other neighbouring tables) there was a bit of a commotion. o It would seem there was a table of “so called” celebrities in and they were just leaving! o Sadly, for the celebrities the only time they were noticed or recognised was by me trotting off to the loo which coincided with them leaving the reception area. The area was full of staff including kitchen staff! All being terribly pathetic in their fawning and annoying to boot! o We would have had no idea that there were “celebrities” if I had not gone for a loo break after such a long delay in food. o Never mind I am sure they are flash in the pan but very important for the marketing shots! o My rougher than ready cousin got bored at this point and vanished for a cigarette outside. o Eventually, after another 25 mins (50 MIN in total) delay. Our food turned up as did our neighbouring tables food…. Question – if food is cooked to order how come three tables which equalled 17 people all turn up at the same time? o So here we go… o Me – Fish stew which had a posher name but given it was described as Mediterranean we all had a giggle about “which part” cooking styles etc are very different across that sea! Well, the sauce was creamy and average, the 3 small langoustines were dried out, fishy tasting and not really worth exploring. There were four mussels – one of which had failed to open during cooking so should NEVER have been put on my plate. The Hake well lovely for the one fork full in the dish. The fries were ok but cost me £5 as an add on! o Friend 1 had the roasted cod which he described as fantastic. Given a year when his wife died and he had not eaten for about 7 years previously we said nothing. If he was going t

After a lovely evening at Rick Stein's restaurant we left with a sour taste in our mouth. The front of house/manager asked to take our bill as we had put cash down ready to pay for our meal (blonde hair scrapped back and navy jacket). The bill for two was £304 including a service charge. We gave £350 cash, the lady didn't return with our change. We requested our change with a waitress in a red apron who said they didn't have a cash float and was unable to give change, nobody shared this with us. I asked her to bring us the £50 note back and we would pay £4 cash or pay by card. The manager returned and said "sorry I didn't realise that you didnt want to pay the charge" ....my partner explained he had no problem in paying the charge but he was still owed £45. It appeared that the front of house 'manager' was trying to pocket the £45 and then continued to make my partner feel like he was unreasonable and embarrass him when he asked for his change. She then tried to only return £25 instead of £45 and then further made an excuse that she had taken many £50 notes that evening and she didn't know what bill was ours. A really poor trick especially after the gentleman that looked after us throughout our meal was so lovely and warm. On our way out we were both in disbelief of the treatment we'd just received. The desk staff asked us about our experience, when we explained the manager was inappropriate. They were uninterested, they didn't want to know why we were disappointed. Apart from our waiter who went above and beyond, a superficial experience with an underhand approach to secure additional monies, a service not paired with the ambience and reputation of the restaurant, food OK. We won't return, tourist trap experience.

Overall we had a nice lunch at Stein’s but we were expecting more. The scallops were well cooked but lacked flavour - also came with quite an oily sauce. I had the sea bass and my partner had Dover sole. Again, nicely cooked but not much flavour and considering the price, disappointing to not come with vegetables. We had lunch as a celebration for our engagement which was put as a note on the reservation although they had to confirm this verbally with us and we didn’t feel the service made us feel particularly special. London prices, without the service or ambience. Ainsworth @ Rojano and Mariners in comparison was much better value & tastier.

First of all cards on the table, I'm a big fan of all things Rick, his books, TV and all round good human being. So does that make me hyper critical as I hold the brand to such a high level? You decide! Firstly the room was outstanding, decorated in Farrow and Ball colours and matt finishes with a seaside theme but not in a tacky way at all. The main sleeping area was a very generous size, as was the bed. Dressing table/desk, wall mounted TV and tea and coffee variety tins, baked treats and water. Up two little stairs into my snug with a small table and two comfy chairs, a well stocked library, funky lighting and a fitted wardrobe and cocktail bar along with a very well stocked mini bar. The bathroom was also fab, great over bath shower very modern and the whole place was immaculate. I ate in the restaurant and the service was as you would expect, fantastic! My waiter Roderick was young but very well trained, pleasant and efficient. The food was brilliant and not particularly expensive, nor were the drinks, the waiting staff were all very attentive. I asked the manager if I could have a look in the kitchen, this was during a busy service, he came back 10 mins later. I was introduced to the Head Chef, who let's be honest must have been very busy and also his soux chef. I was also given a tour of the kitchen and explained the functions and different areas, totally unexpected but totally in keeping with everything about this hotel and restaurant! Breakfast was also outstanding with all kinds of options from home and abroad, the atmostphere, cleanliness, professionalism and friendliness is evident in everything about this place and I will stay there many more times I hope. Being aware of my review I was determined to find a negative - best I could do was an overhead light bulb was out in the bathroom downlighter!! The toiletries by the way are brilliant too!
