A truly traditional tavern with truly traditional pub fare and truly traditional real ale and ciders. The very best of welcomes - run by an exceptionally good humoured, friendly and hospitable landlord with his family. Just as a pub should be. Proper job! So good we called in 4 times during our 6 days in Devon over Christmas - lunches and dinner all superb, but don't expect gastrogrub: this is a genuine, honest pub serving quality food (landlord was a butcher so knows his meat!) and the servings are generous. As the landlord said, "We don't do fancy!" But they do do fantastic ham and eggs, and perfectly cooked steaks, and more. A wide choice of real ales and ciders are their speciality, and they take pride in keeping and serving them at their best. This tavern is full of character, and characters (present and past, as the legendary Tom Cobley set off to Widdecombe Fair from here). One in a million. It has rooms too, which we haven't experienced but maybe next time .........

Excellent place to stay for a solo visitor. All very kind and friendly and gave local tips as l did not know the area at all. Food was delicious. Room was quiet and comfortable. The shower was hot. What more does a guest need! A really good vibe all round. Thanks to all who made my stay a pleasure.

We precooked a Sunday lunch as we were stating in a nearby cottage. It was everything we expected it to be, given the comments in the Visitors Book. Communication was good, with our booking confirmed, for the three of us plus two small dogs. We arrived a bit early, but this didn't phase the young team. The roast dinners came out hot, with lots of freshly cooked vegetables. There was a good selection of mainly cold desserts. The landlord visiting our table to welcome us was a nice touch, as was the free children's roast we had ordered for our dogs. All in all it was a lovely meal, and a good village pub atmosphere.

Beautiful local pub in a lovely little village.Always a warm welcome on the times we’ve visited. Our visit today was no different. Roger welcomed us and recommended some beers/ciders based on our taste - his knowledge is outstanding and was spot on with both our drinks! The food is also great quality and really tasty. Decent portions for a sensible price. We always love coming here and will most certainly be back once again!

I went to the TC today with friends from the Exeter & East Devon branch of CAMRA to present the landlords daughter Lucy, with a certificate as being judged winner of the CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale) South West Region Cider Pub of the Year 2023, & wished them luck in the next stage to become the National CPotY winner. We had an Educational time, where we had blind tasting's of six different styles of cider to appreciate the various aromas, mouth feel & flavours to be found in them. ??????We all had a great day with a lovely ploughman's lunch with apple cake & custard for dessert. We usually go for the large number of Real Ales, mainly from the South West, but today we were all drinking from an impressive range of cider & also some lovely Perry, which for those who don't know is similar to cider, but made from pear's instead of apple's.Cheers. ?
