We always look forward to calling here as we pass through Barnard Castle on the way to family in Durham. Delicious fish and chips and always efficient friendly staff serving.

We came here before a show at the Witham and made a good choice in doing so. Although the dining area was quite open to the cold wind that came through the door the staff were warm and helpful. Our cod and chips were excellent especially the light crispy batter that covered the fish. The curry sauce was a good addition too. No 149 offers very reasonable value and must be one of the best places for fish and chips in the area.

Simply the very best Gluten Free Fish and Chips in the North East and perhaps beyond. Excellent Friendly Service where nothing is a problem. Can not wait to visit Barnard Castle again , just to get these fish and chips.

Delicious cod and chips! The light crispy batter was perfect. The staff never stopped in the time we were there. Definitely worth a visit.

Called in here for my tea and got a table no problem. The eating area/restaurant was clean and tidy and well lit. The service was excellent with the waitress suggesting various dishes on offer . My pot of tea was also accompanied with a pot of hot water so I actually received about 4 cups of tea. I had fish and chips with mushy peas and their curry sauce and I enjoyed everything including the brown bread included in my choice, white or brown bread was offered. All in all a very nice experience and will be there again shortly. Highly recommend.

We were on the way to an Award winning fish and chip shop...but it was closed , thank goodness because we had the best fish and chips EVER at 149. Absolutely delicious, the cod was superb, the batter crispy and light ,the chips morish and the peas delectable, the only down side is we live 3 hrs away.

Had large cod, chips and mushy peas in the café. 149 never disappoints - I come here whenever I can. The cod is superb, the batter delicious and crispy and the chips are thick-cut and not at all greasy. I can't leave out the mushy peas: they're also great. I have a good appetite and the portions are enough for me. Prompt service too.

The best ever fish and chips, and they cater for Coeliacs too which makes a huge difference for our family meals. Staff are always friendly and can’t do enough to help. And they make amazing spam fritters…

Great food, reasonable price and we ordered online for collection. We found the mini portion and small chips was ample with a side of peas and curry. Recommended

I just tried this small fish and chip shop for the first time and have nothing but good things to say. I had the large cod and chips with mushy peas and a pot of tea, and my son had the fish bites with chips. I have now found a chip shop that can cook fish and chips. I asked for my fish to be well-cooked, as I like my fish batter crispy, and they said that that would be no problem whatsoever. Mine and my son's meal were of top quality and the service was great. It was, overall, a super friendly and welcoming place and a great experience. I will definitely be coming back again!

If you want to eat some of the finest fish and chips in the UK, this place is an absolute must. Used it twice last week and have been for nearly 40 years and it has never failed to deliver. So if your not local and passing through, forget Greggs and all the other places and treat yourself at 149

Great haddock and chips, fish cooked to perfection, lovely chips, good portion. Nice cup of proper tea all served by a lovely staff member who couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. All the staff were friendly and looked like they were happy to work in this busy chip shop/restaurant. We will be back next time we are in Barnard Castle, which, by the way, stands out as a lovely town, clean and tidy and the flowers still blooming.

Dear me the batter is sooooo good all crispy no soggy bits. Chips are heavenly and real mushy peas. I am going again as soon as I can. We ate in so it was a real treat!
