Excellent gluten free menu available with lots of options including breakfast, lunch, and two types of scones. All the staff were super friendly and helpful. Food was delicious and fresh. Plenty of room with both upstairs and downstairs seating areas and a baby change facility on both floors. Window says all dogs welcome and there was a dog bowl outside too. Just to note that cash is preferred, but they accept card over £5. A great find!Dietary restrictions: Excellent choice for gluten free!

Very good sandwiches and snacks. Specials board with a Teesdale rarebit (with bacon!) - very good!! Has a lovely secluded courtyard excellent in sunny weather. Dogs allowed. Cakes and desserts such as homemade pecan pie. Lovely!

The cafe caught our eye due to the “dog’s welcome” sign. Inside we were led to an upstairs table by the waitress “Evie”. The staff were attentive, professional and friendly. We had a selection of light meals at our table, from tuna and mayonnaise Jacket Potato, bacon sandwich, sausage sandwich and a toasted cheese scone. All of which were delicious and well presented The coffees (cappuccinos and flat whites were also excellent. It’s quite a spacious cafe with the upstairs and downstairs and being dog friendly is a real bonus. Evie the waitress was the consummate professional, being efficient and friendly. Penny’s is definitely an excellent cafe to visit

Excellent service, food is excellent and value for money. We were struggling to find a pet friendly place to eat on our mini break due to most places are closed Monday to Wednesday. It was typical Uk weather wet and windy when we came across this gem which saved our day. They were so friendly to our two dogs offering them treats and water even before they served the humans LOL. The menu is so good it was hard to choose from all the goodies on offer. Our party had ham and cheese panini, corned beef pie with chips, peas and gravy and an english breakfast. Mango smoothies for the men and a Java coffee for the ladies. All were extremely good, I cannot describe how good this place is. The cake display was so good we had to buy some to go. If we are ever in Barnard castle we would definitely go back to Penny's tearoom. Might even do a special trip just for the cakes alone :)

Great staff,so cheerful and calm, and hardworking.lots of dogs,we like that, and the soup is hot,we like that too.only one suggestion, can the bread with soup be changed or option of crusty white roll,or wholemeal roll?love Penny's,always come in when we're in Barney.

Seemed like a nice place from the outside, but don't think we'll bother again. The chairs were hard and uncomfortable, the table was sticky, and the breakfast was below average. For £9.75 you expect a bit of quality, but it was nothing you couldn't get in a Wetherspoons. The sausages are apparently 'local butcher's sausages'. If I knew which butcher I wouldn't be visiting there either. Tiny and unappetising chipolatas that simply weren't nice. The bacon was ok but thick sliced, so tough, and the fat wasn't rendered properly. The mushrooms were watery and lukewarm. The tomato had been fried instead of roasted, so wasn't cooked through. On the plus side, toast was decent. Just not for me.
