Overall 5 * due to the Staff, Food and Ambiance. This is an old building, full of character. Rooms are clean with Tea and Coffee, En Suite, TV etc but quite dated. This is not a problem as the Food, Ambiance and Staff interaction, service and attitude more than make up for it. My Family and were lucky enough to have front row seats with our meal at the " Open Mic Night "( Thursday Nights ) - some great performances ???Definitely be back ?

Well worth the stay. Good value. It's quirky, different, clean and on the high street. Always weary of these old pubs that say they offer accommodation, but this was spot on. Free parking either side of the hotel. Please try out these old properties, the owners go to alot of trouble to make their uniqueness attractive and it's paid off here.

WC.e stayed here the night before a function close by the next day. We had a lovely warm greeting upon checking in. Our room was freezing cold but then I discovered two things - the radiators were at zero despite it being the coldrest day of the year so far (-2C) and a small fan heater in the wardrobe. Between turning up the radiator and the fan heater, the warmth was enough. The actual room was lovely, but the bathroom could have done with quite a lot of TLC. I could not get the shower head to stay in one position - not ideal when you are washing your hair for a wedding later that day!. Had a very nice breakfast the next morning although I regret to say that most of it (particluarly the beans) were lukewarm.Very friendly and helpful staff though, which always makes a difference.

We had a great night here. Room was lovely, clean and spacious. Sleigh bed was huge! Breakfast was excellent. Staff friendly. There was an open mic night Thursday, they have some very talented performers! We'll be back!Nearby activities: Very quirky shop/restaurant/bar opposite. Oldest house in town. 1700s

This place is in the heart of Barnard Castle, owned and run by a charming, attentive and cultured chap by the name of Roy. We stayed here with our dog for a much welcome one night stop-over during our camper van trip. Our room was large, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a delicious Indian meal, cooked in-house by a fabulous chef who came out to the bar to chat about the menu - then adapted his dishes to suit. Delicious freshly cooked breakfast, too. It's no wonder this is such a popular pub/inn and we would definitely stay there again. Zanzibar's loss is Barnard Castle's gain (you'll need to chat with Roy to understand that!).Well done, Roy and staff.

It's not a 5-star hotel, as mentioned by other reviews. The staff are lovely. Our twin room was fine. Warm. Comfortable. The en-suit did have a slight musty aroma, but it was clean. The shower looked dated, but it was roomy, and the electric shower was the same as one we had installed at home. Book direct! Breakfast was lovely. They didn't do food on the Monday night we stayed, but the barmaid recommended a great alternative. Loads of character in this historic building. I really liked it. Excellent value for money. Lovely town too.

What a lovely place to stop, great atmosphere in the rear bar area. Chatting with locals and guests. The staff are helpful friendly and pleased to serve you.Breakfast was a full English with thick toasted bread all cooked fresh and delivered with a smile. We had the Sunday roast and the Thalli but ate out on Monday as no food was served in house. We would love to return. The room was warm and inviting, beds comfortable and en suite small but practical. Very peaceful sleep on both nights. Thanks very much we hope to return soon.Rooms: The room (3) was nice and warm with no noise to disturb, bathroom was small but easily managed by my blind wife, the floor area was Nicky carpeted and made us feel very at home. Very very competitive priced room with full breakfast included.Food & drinks: Beers very reasonable price, Sunday roast was very good and lean beef. The lamb Thalli I ate was very tasty.Tea and coffee served if required. The staff particularly Susie was very disabled friendly, taking the time to tell my blind wife where she’d placed the drinks, food and cutlery. No food on Monday nights, but plenty of local places to eat. But beware most finish service at 8pm weekdays.

Great pub on the main street of Barnard Castle. About 4 Real Ales (including Cummings & Goings) and good traditional pub food. Definitely pop in if you are in the area.

Pleasant place -room fine -shower good but shower tray looked bit tatty one small opening window but did have fan which was good as when we stayed it was very warm. Staff friendly and helpful breakfast good and breakfast room itself very pleasant nicely decorated nicest room in building .Meal on evening had sharing sea food platter nice and plenty of it also 10per cent off as we were hotel guests. Dog friendly but paid highest cost here for our two dogs than anywhere we have stayed on our holiday. The beer garden definitely needs a good tidy up grass needed cutting shrubs needed trimmingpaving and tables and seating all could have done with a good clean it was just us that thought that could hear a lot of the same comments from other people shame as could be really nice.
