I’ve been frequenting this pleasant cafe within hotel indigo for a couple of years but it has become increasingly difficult to find a seat as it seems to have become the go to venue for students. Obviously attracted by the free WiFi, and not so much for the food and drink as it appears that not much of either is being purchased from what I have witnessed lately!

I often come into Tinderbox on a Friday but i have to say that today i was less than impressed by the service and customer service by the staff. I ordered a Americano coffee and a pot of tea and two tuna sandwiches one with coleslaw for lunch and was served by a pleasant lady who took my ordered when I asked for coleslaw another less polite female member of said there was no coleslaw at all. So I back to my table and waited for my simple order - 15 minutes later no beverages or food but other people who ordered after us were served. Then I heard lots of laughing etc coming from the service area so I went to enquire where our order was only to be met by the unpolite member of staff laughing and chatting with an Indigo receptionist and 2 other members of tinderbox staff - I was told it was on its way 5 mins later a basic tuna sandwich came and i enquired why was the coleslaw on menu if they had none I got a reply of we are all out of coleslaw I cannot alter that do you want crisps - the tea and coffee followed a few minutes later by another sheepish member of staff. If this had been my first time here I would not be coming back but I do think the staff on today need customer service training.

This is a lovely place and not on Elvet bridge so you’re more likely to get a seat but without the view, lattes were lovely as was the bacon butty & much cheaper than expected, being linked to Hotel Indigo, my only complaint would be the coleslaw accompanying my cheese n onion toasy was very bland as was the tomato ?, think an establishment like this could surely make their own coleslaw?

I visit regularly on the way to my daughter’s dance class next door. I recently won their monthly competition and we are here today to enjoy our winnings! My eldest daughter said it is the best hot chocolate ever…high praise from an 11yr old. Great coffee and we shared a chocolate and coconut torte- rich but delicious, and a chocolate brownie- chewy and firm. We’ll be back to try some more!

Stopping in the hotel. Served by the amazing and most helpful Sophie. She went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and sort us with food and drinks. Highly recommend.

Clearly popular with both hotel guests and passing trade. Recommended if you are in the Old Elvet Bridge area and want to escape the hustle and bustle of the old tow

We pop in here about twice a month when we’re out & about in Durham. We love the atmosphere & the fact that it is dog friendly! The cafe is inside such a beautiful building & I like how relaxed it feels inside here - a lovely place to chill out. We have been served by Phil & Eni in the past & they’re both super friendly! Thank you so much! We will see you again on our next visit

Tinderbox is a lovely cafe. Always great service, the staff are always lovely and friendly. Food is well priced and always tasty! Love the fact that they’re also dog friendly and welcome them in with you. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
