Lovely country pub with great atmosphere, a great function room upstairs and a lovely beer

Lovely roast, friendly attentive staff. Just feel it was a bit overpriced.

An absolutely beautiful historic pub, perfect cosy fires in winter and a big beautiful garden for summer. There are some great local walks too, so ideal for a post walk beverage!

I never usually write reviews but felt that I needed to. This is the first time we'd visited and to be honest, I was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews. But, we were so glad we tried it for ourselves. It is a beautiful old pub and they were extremely busy (which speaks volumes) but we managed to get a last minute booking and the service was great. We did arrive a little late so they almost gave our table away, and we had to order quickly as the kitchen was closing, but this was fine and Sue politely explained this to us. The food came out fast and it was lovely, we couldn't fault it. I have to disagree with the comments written about the landlady. Because the Sue we met today was very attentive and nothing but friendly. She also took the time to chat to us and our daughter dispite being so busy. I've actually never been to a pub where the landlord/landlady has been so interactive with the customers, it was really welcoming. We had a very enjoyable lunch and will definitely be returning, but will also recommend it to friends and family too. Thank you to Sue and the staff at The Star Inn, Naomi & Reuben

Great old, atmospheric pub. Friendly, efficient, attentive staff. Lots of variety on the menu. Good food.

Avoid this place, the woman who appears to be in charge is very unpleasant and would appear to be an expert in passive-aggressive, and has very limited skills when it comes to hospitality...Avoid

Seven of us went to the Star for Sunday lunch, the roast beef was excellent as was the pear and apple crumble, the staff were both cheerful and helpful. Our table was up the stairs to a beautiful vaulted ceiling room, it was candle-lit which was very atmospheric,

We’ve been going to this pub on and off for some 30 years. It’s always been varying, but recently the food has been especially bad. The pub itself is wonderful, although parking is limited. We finally abandoned it after a dreadful lunch. How is it possible to ruin a basic pub fish and chips? But they did so. Hopefully someone else will take it over and improve it. If and when they do, we and many others will support it.

The staff were friendly and the pub is a lovely old building. The roast beef was probably the worst I've had in years though - very chewy and grisly and somehow the roast potatoes tasted of a cleaning product (something like bleach?). On reflection I should have sent it back, but in true English style I soldiered on, only to moan later :-)

Went for lunch, found the lady behind the bar very unwelcoming, sat in the garden on tables that looked like they were 14th century! Our starters were delicious, but my partner and I both had the rib eye steak, after the waitress advising us to have it cooked medium rare as was an aged piece of meat when I got mine there was probably only about 3 maybe 4 mouthfuls that were edible it was very difficult to cut even with a steak knife and almost impossible to chew! My partners steak was ok when the waitress came back I explained how I found it and she could see nearly all the steak on the plate she was straight on the defensive saying it’s a rib eye it’s supposed to be fatty but it wasn’t the fat that was the issue it was all the gristle and sinewy bits running throughout making it impossible to cut or chew! She then said ok you didn’t say you couldn’t chew it! Although I had said it was inedible! At £30 I expected better! She said she would tell the chef later when she came back and we weren’t offered anything not even a drink! Shame as the rest of the meal was good! Won’t go back!

We went here hoping for a nice meal for our wedding anniversary. However, after we'd ordered our drinks, the unfriendly barlady told us that as it was si hot the kitchen had just closed. It was 2.10 pm!! Very disappointed. We won't go there again as the last time a bar staff member was pretty miserable and no smile or pleasantries. Such a shame as an amazing pub with a stunning beer garden. A very sad and disappointed customer!!!

We visited as a family on Saturday lunchtime. Found the landlady to be extremely defensive when telephoning to book a table, her reaction was “don’t you know how busy we are”? The irony was that the place was extremely quiet! Her bar lady (mature woman) was unbelievably rude, literally snapping at you, it seemed to annoy her that we had simply wanted to order drinks. Wish I had read the reviews before, but the most unwelcoming defensive people I have ever met. Hospitality is not what they are. However, we did have a lovely young waitress serve us, poor girl must be so much miserable if they are her work colleagues/boss. I am amazed that they actually make any money as I am certain all locals must avoid, now me included as we have never had such rude interactions. Such a shame as the pub has a lot of history, gardens are lovely, gorgeous views and reasonable food. Unfortunately this did not make up for their attitude. Avoid like the plague!

I found the 3 mature ladies in the pub very unwelcoming because we were 5 mins early to opening time at 12 midday. They kept saying how unprepared they were and couldn't give me a paper menu as they were being sorted to eliminate the dirty ones. Eventually I was given one from the pile.On ordering our food I was told I couldn't have a black coffee with milk on the side as it came out of a machine and they were not allowed into kitchen to get milk to put even just a dash into my black coffee for me .... merely because they press a button and the coffee comes from the machine. When I paid the bill without adding my usual tip as I felt rather a nuisance. However, the two servers who brought our food were charming and very helpful. while sitting in the garden which was peaceful and quite delightful a friendly Robin joined us.The food was good and well priced but not exceptional. I and my son decided we would recommend it to our family or friends.
