Having been a resident in this area for many years I have seen the "Fish" have fluctuating fortunes, the current incumbents have only been running the pub for a few months although the manager has the benefit of longer service behind the bar. They are both qualified chef's and not new to the trade. The food is exceptionally good, there might be a wait for the meal but I would rather have fresh, beautifully cooked food than immediate plateful of microwaved frozen offerings. I am a very able cook myself so am often very critical of other's catering. Staff are helpful, friendly and welcoming to two legged as well as four legged visitors.

I regularly eat on a Sunday lunch time, in my opinion the service has been impeccable, friendly, obliging and welcoming. There is sometimes a wait for my meal but I understand that when everything is freshly cooked to high standard I cannot expect the fast service of McDonald's or KFC and similar outlets. I have enjoyed every meal, I have felt that I would rather have a few idiosyncrasies which are inherent in a pub, it is not a posh restaurant but a venue which provides excellent food and warm atmosphere and caring staff.

The food was delicious and plentiful, brought out with panache and friendliness, They coped with our really big group brilliantly and just let us get on and enjoy ourselves. Next time I would take a few less with us as the chairs were comfortable but a bit too big to fit around the table!

Arrived and they had no record of our booking and made it out they we booked somewhere else or it was our fault, no real apology on their side. We then had to wait well over an hour for food, which was very nice. Asked for condiments, which took ages to arrive, in mean time good was going cold. Ordered drinks that never arrived as well. The deposit amount on final bill was wrong as well. Overall food was good but service was terrible, despite bad reviews from friends and neighbours we chose it as its local and good to support local pubs but I would not go back or recommend for a special occasion. There was a lack of management of front of house staff, the staff they had seemed lost at times, but they were pleasant and never rude.

Went for Sunday lunch food was very nice but the service was awful, had to go to the bar to order as no one came to take our order , once we where at the bar we asked to order our food the guy got his pad out then served someone else , food took over an hour , we had to ask for napkins , had to get our own salt and pepper , once we had finish some came over and removed a few plates and then never came back , the service was awful it was such a shame

Had a fantastic meal here tonight. We ordered three pies and a burger. All of the food was amazing and very generous portions. The price was really reasonable and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The pub itself has a really cosy atmosphere and we would definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody visiting Newhaven.

The Flying Fish is well worth seeking out if you're down Newhaven way. On a cold and wet December day we got a warm reception from staff and customers in this cosy pub. The range of food was good with dishes for veggies and vegans, all at reasonable prices. The Flying Fish is dog friendly too.

What a positively welcoming pub. I felt at home within minutes of arriving. Great atmosphere, friendly locals and delivered fresh food. I really enjoyed my Sunday roast followed by a crumble. Perfect tummy full before driving to Portugal. Yay!!

As a solo traveller, I was made to feel really welcome by the staff, Natalie was fantastic in making me feel like a king for the night. The food (fish pie main, crumble desert) were delicious, and they must keep a good Cellar because the beer was really good. A few of the locals were kind enough to offer up some good conversation and although there was Christmas music, much of it was slightly less mainstream and not so loud that people couldn't enjoy each other's company. As Thursday evenings go, this one was really very pleasant, like being at home, but with the added bonus of fantastic company, tasty food and drink and a wonderful smile as warm as the fire.
