Gorgeous location deserves 5 stars. Fabulous half timbered Tudor hall restaurant and glorious outside space. But undrinkable coffee and average cake offerings rates 0 stars. Sadly my decaf iced coffee with oat was so harsh and bitter I actually couldn’t finish it. My friend declared her Victoria sponge was ‘made in a factory’. My blueberry and buttermilk cake again seemed to have the self same sponge base as the Victoria with a few blueberries scattered in. No evidence of buttermilk that I could see! Earlier in the day I had had a particularly great decaf iced coffee with oat in Colchester so it can be done! It’s a shame because we really need to support businesses that take on these ancient buildings and maintain them for the nation at considerable cost to themselves. But really an undrinkable coffee.

Appalling service. Waited for one hour to be served. Order arrived all wrong. No apologies were given, nothing was offered to solve the issue. Aboslutely zero customer service skills. Average food. Beautiful setting.

Visited for breakfast.... started with cold coffee (then overheard the waitress saying the wind probably made it cold!) Bacon sandwich with dry bread (watched the chef fumble through the bread to find something fresh) and greasy bacon, with small bits of sausage! Sausage sandwich inedible, undercooked sausages with revolting chewy thick skin - complained and was told, oh a few people have complained about the sausages. Disappointing - its not difficult to make a nice bacon or sausage sandwich!

Delightful setting; like a secret graden, so unexpected in the heart of a busy town. Superb food menu with delicious coffee and proper leaf tea. Lovely friendly and well-trained staff.

Had a great time at Tymperleys, suitable for a special occasion, but slightly on the pricier side I would think for what they offer. They do have a lovely range of tea, cake and breakfast/brunch selection but nothing especially memorable. The interior reminds me of the historic Lavenham houses, which gives it a charming character, and has a superb courtyard for a sunny day, which is what won us over. We could sit and work on our laptops while soaking in the sun and the overall lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit on a nice day.

Nice enough food, without being exceptional in any way, the interior is lovely and the staff were friendly, but, despite all that, I'm in no rush to return.

Visited today and were very lucky to get the last seat outside. It really is a wonderful place to sit in the sun and glance at the beautiful building. Staff were pleasant whilst being very busy on this Jubilee Bank Holiday. I had a delicious meal of Halloumi Skewers and my partners Eggs Benedict looked very tasty. We shall be back soon.

Arrived at 3.30, were presented with menus and asked to take a seat, quite a few customers in but staff not busy as everyone had already been served. We took a seat outside in the sun and waited, and waited, and waited whilst we watched staff chatting to each other inside. Then another couple came along and we’re seated near to us while we waited and then watched them being served. At this point we left in search of somewhere that would provide some service. A lovely place to sit, but avoid Tymperleys if you are seeking somewhere to eat and drink.

We fhought it seemed a bit empty until realising most people were in the sunny courtyard. Food was vey pleasant and the service was very polite. A most relaxed meeting spot.

Lovely staff and delicious food! I’ve been for afternoon tea and lunch and thoroughly enjoyed both. They even do children’s afternoon tea now which went down a treat!

Booked for Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea with a Prosecco (£27.50 each). We sat outside admiring the grounds whilst they got our inside table ready (we got a choice of inside or outside). When sat, they explained the inclusion of unlimited teas (many to choose from) or cafetière of coffee. There were 4 of us so we got 2 stands of: sandwiches, cakes & scones, all of which were nice. Lovely venue and staff, our waitress even offered to take a photo of us at our table :)
