We ate in the restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday and the food was at best average, the batter was oily, the chicken dried out with tough skin and the chips were Luke warm and limp. They don’t seem to know what temperature to have their oil at. We won’t be back.

Very good meal decent price and nice girl serving us. The usual crowd during the day are a lot of old timers. Could do with fixing the front door as makes a draft. Tasty fish and chips. Cheers ?

We called in tonight for a fish and chip takeaway on our way back from an afternoon shopping trip. Very disappointing!! I dont think I have ever seen a piece of fish so over- battered as my wife's skate wing!! We wont be going back.

Family favourite place to eat. Amazing staff. Always order takeaway, great food. They do onion vinegar which is lovely. Can't wait to get paid so I can come back again as its been nearly a year.

Review of The Friendly Fryer, Coach Lane, Maldon, Essex Friday evening and our popular choice for the family end-of-week takeaway was ‘Fish&Chips’. Typically, we run 5 km into South Woodham Ferris for our F&C but, earlier that day. there had been some kind of police lockdown on the Woodham Road to the east of the town. It had caused gridlock on the network of rural roads to the north and east that, at best can handle push bikes, an occasional tractor and the cars of the people who actually live there. It eventually took us an hour to detour through Bicknacre and Cock Clarks to reach home that late afternoon. Everywhere there were traffic jams. There was no way that we wanted to re-chance Woodham. Instead, we opted for the slightly longer run into Maldon. At the top of the High Street where Coach Lane takes you through to the outside seating area of the Blue Boar, there’s ‘The Friendly Fryer’ Fish&Chip Restaurant/Shop/Takeaway Services (‘Fryer’). We knew the place from earlier and it was an obvious choice. Parking is a doddle – there’s the Friary Fields Car Park behind the line of shops across on the south side of the High Street and parking is free after 17.00 h. Park and walk through the shops to the High Street (take Edwards Walk, for example). This did not, however, stop the takeaway trade from parking immediately outside the Fryer and blocking Coach Lane notwithstanding yellow anti-parking lines both sides – while someone rushed inside to pay/collect a phone-in order. The Fryer is based in a delightful late 19th - early 20th C period building that stretches along one side of the lane. The shop front, counter inside and space in which to order/hang-around/etc. is SMALL. Around 19.00 h that evening and there were half-dozen of us inside whilst more people were entering to order and/or check-on and/or collect earlier orders that were now ready. London Underground trains at peak travel times come to mind. The menu is fixed to the wall at one end and next to the till and this is where you pay/order/collect. Ours was a choice of Cod&Chips with various fish sizes including one ‘large’ cod (which was shared by two of the five people for whom we were buying) and two large chips. A pickle onion and a tub of mushy peas completed the order. We paid £41 for the food (so, £8/person). We subsequently noticed a ‘Senior Citizen’s’ meal listed on the menu at £7/person. The friendly woman at the till explained that this was simply a smaller meal for those who wanted to eat less – and that anyone can order it. We figured to check it out next time. We waited around 20 minutes for the food to be prepared. We passed on the vinegar and salt – best handled at the table - bundled our food up and headed back to the car and home. The food was delicious … fish cooked to order, the batter light and crispy, no longer piping hot but more than sufficient for a meal al fresco that evening. Tasty fish that melted in the mouth. Plentiful. Then there were the chips – mixed in size/shape/colour as if they had been cut by hand and/or purposely purchased like that. We didn’t think to ask, but differences in colour may be the result of the potatoes remaining unpeeled before chipping. This has distinct health value – capturing the fibres and a bunch of other nutrients (vit. C, K, antioxidants, etc.). Skin provides an additional crispy texture with an added subtle flavour that some people can pick up. There’s also less food waste. Whatever, the chips were irregular in shape, size and length and … they were great to eat. It was a delightful meal. Peter Steele 05Sept23

Have used this place for the past two years but within the last couple of months this place has unfortunately gone downhill. Two or so months ago got takeaway for the family, got food back to the house and the chips were soggy and in some cases "rotten". Also just all the small bits that must collect at the bottom of the container they use, very disappointing. Decided to go back a few weeks later incase it was just a one off but that wasn't the case. Same again tonight, chips were brown, completely soggy and flavourless. Saveloy had rock hard skin and compleetly unedible as if it was sat under the hot lights for hours on end, the kids were very unhappy. Will sadly take my business elsewhere. Service from the staff is fine, though you don't often actually get salt and vinegar even when asked. Atmosphere is fine also, it's a chippy.

Excellent fish and chips and service. Good value. A number of car parks nearby. Our calamari starter was delicious. All freshly cooked

Sorry to have to give poor review....I called to place order at lunchtime..I called as thought food would be freshly cooked ( have had poor experience before)..picked up 10 mins later got home to find fish well overcooked and oily, and very old chips, gherkin also weird taste...couldnt take back as caring for elderly relative, so out of pocket £11.50....will never return sadly.
