We had the most amazing Valentine’s Day celebration dinner tonight! Nigel and Jackie’s exceptional food and hospitality never fail to impress. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth, from the welcoming atmosphere and log burning fire. As always, they have outdone themselves once again. It’s always a bonus that they welcome dogs too! Highly recommend for any occasion

Excellent old pub with a really good selection of ales. Open log fires in both bars. A wide choice of food served by smiling waiters. Small car park to the sid.
We arrived at 12 on Sat and had fish options from the speacials menu, everything very nicely cooked and tasty. Prices only slightly north of what you pay in a chain like Harvester. Pace of (charming) service was relaxed which might irritate people in a rush, but really not a problem. Sticky toffee pudding with custard was lovely. Nice ambience with an open fire and a short walk from Down House where Darwin lived and worked.

Nice, relaxed country pub. Ideal for breaking a walk in the area. Food served throughout the day - vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Very welcoming.

Lovely little tea shop attached to the pub. My partner had soup and a sandwich, which he said was delicious. I would recommend this quirky little place, when visiting the village of Downe.

We had just been to Christmas Tree Farm and thought we would go in the cafe next to the pub. Cafe was closing and they said if we went in the pub they would provide us with drinks. I have never been in such a dark, dingy pub like this. All the furniture was different and uncomfortable, outside, what can I say. It was just horrible. I would not recommend this pub.

I was in here this evening having a meal when I heard a commotion looking over I witnessed what I believe to be the manager talking to some poor customers who were being very reasonable even after finding hairs in their food not one but two of them so badly it made me very uncomfortable. The food was at best a one star and I only put that as there wasn’t a zero star option.Won’t be visting here ever again. They need the health inspector to pop by and find out why people are finding hairs in there food. Avoid at all costs.
