Have just had the most amazing meal for hubby's birthday at 39 On the Quay. We chose the set menu, and the carrot soup starter was out of this world, certainly not your normal soup - the texture and taste were nothing short of sublime. The rest of the meal didn't disappoint, everything about the meal was exceptional - we just loved it.A truly high-class restaurant with very reasonable pricing. We shall be back.Thank you for a very enjoyable evening.

Eaten here a couple of times recently. Service is friendly and very but not overly attentive. Food is excellent-outstanding, great flavours and presentation with unexpected extra amuse bouche courses included. An extensive wine list offered at not crazy priced. A really special afternoon or evening out.

Booked a month in advance for a taster menu for two for my partners special birthday. Asked for 1x normal and 1x vegetarian. The lady on the phone said she would check with the chef and call me straight back that today to confirm all okay. Then 5 days before received a call saying they don’t usually do vegetarian taster menus but would be able to do some veggie dishes while my partner had the meat taster menu. 2 days before I then received another call saying they don’t do veggie dishes at all. I asked to cancel the reservation, could hear her talking to someone in the background and then she hung up on me. Called back and was hung up on again! I was very polite so no idea why they would be so rude. This left me two days to find somewhere else, which as Xmas party season is starting, left me with limited options. Very disappointing! Will definitely not be returning.

Had a birthday lunch today. Starter and main where tasty. Dessert came and the sponge was extremely dry. It was sent back. Unfortunately nothing else was offered. On the way out I said to the owner my best lasting impression was the dessert..and unfortunately I would not recommend. Heidi here I come.
Exceptional service and food. Lovely, cosy atmosphere. We had the 8 course taster menu which was incredible. We will definitely be back to try the main menu.

Bread was to die for - nice idea with the different butters. Duck, fish, skate and chicken all devoured! Forgot to take pictures of the cheese!! Very jealous of the table having the Tasting Menu with Flight!!! Will count pennies and book for that soon! PS - service was 12/10 - excellent knowledge - a joy to be served like this.

The whole experience booking to leaving was great. We went on Thursday to take advantage of the fixed price menu. The choice was great and has a creative twist in the choices. The location is wonderful and service first class. If you get a chance go.

Reviewing the restaurant (when will Google sort out the dilemma of eating places sometimes being sleeping places outside the US?!)With the closure of Restaurant 27 in Southsea, the other numerical restaurant in SE Hampshire - 36 On The Quay - has the field almost to itself at the top end of the market. There are others, but these two stood out.It will now be even harder to get a reservation here but the wait is worth it. The food is really excellent and always a friendly smile with the service. The menus are different and unusual, miles away from the gastropub efforts more representative of middle England.Excellent wine list although the range of beers is minimal.Highly, highly recommended.Parking can be tricky on summer weekend evenings.
