From the moment we set foot in this lovely New Forest pub the staff were so welcoming and friendly, the service and food we received was amazing and we both agreed that we have not received such good service in a pub/restaurant for many years, will definitely be coming back soon.

Have been using the pub being a local but let down badly this time. Ordered from the menu and when checking the receipt found that they had charged approximately 50% more than the menu prices for the two meals. The staff member was unable to explain why this was so.I asked for a refund but it was refused and offered a free drink of which I declined. Will not be using the pub again

I just want to mention Issy, Dani and Russell for the warm welcome and great service. Lovely Sunday roast

Living in a small village just south of Winchester, in one National Park, Lyndhurst down in The New Forest is in another National Park...and is very much one of my go-to 'happy places' where I always seem to relax and feel very much at home...partly because, despite being the 'de facto' capital of the New Forest, it is still very much a village..and a pretty one at that...and also that much of my childhood was spent down in the woodlands, heaths & open spaces of this world famous Forest! Being just one main High Street, (in effect), Lyndhurst is still a major tourist draw, partly because of its famous Ferrari garage at the bottom of the village and the superb Antiques Emporium at the top.. ....and of course not forgetting, up in the church, the evocative grave of Alice Pleasance Liddell, the little girl who inspired Lewis Carroll's 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' and who, under her married name of Alice Hargreaves, came to live in Lyndhurst and became a well-known society hostess. However another primary reason Lyndhurst is so popular with locals & visitors alike is because of the myriad pubs & wine bar and eating & coffee houses that front the lovely High Street and the choices offered thereby to stop briefly for a cuppa or linger a little longer over lunch or perhaps an evening dinner! My post-media career now often finds me back down in Lyndhurst with a big grin on my face but sadly my usual lack of 'hours in the day' limits me to just a hastily grabbed coffee from the main coffee chain on the High Street, but last week I found myself with a pre-scheduled couple of free hours to indulge my love of Lyndhurst and so had arranged to meet a friend in the village for lunch! My suggested meeting place was The Fox & Hounds as it is a most beautiful New Forest Pub and I am so glad I did as my friend was most impressed...so 'feather in cap' moment there! I remember reading somewhere that The Fox might have actually been a Coaching Inn in the dim and distant past..it certainly has that look..., and the feel, as one walks though the front door, is certainly one of a long & evocative past, that's for sure! Inside it is very beautiful..all dark oak beams & wooden tables. many nooks & crannies and an enticing bar offering local beers & ciders..a smashing place to chill for an hour or so, to be sure! Grabbing one of the high wooden table & stools by the bar, two alcohol-free Guinness' were ordered, (always a boon for we drivers!) and sat down (or should that be 'up'?), with me by chance with my back to the bar so I had a view through the window out onto the busy & most engaging High Street.. and we were presented with our enticing menus. I could see that lunch offered a range of options from sandwiches & light bites to something more substantial.. but not being heavy 'mid-day eaters', we opted for sandwiches..mine being chicken on white with chestnut stuffing & fries, (my companion opting for a tomato-based offering)...and they soon appeared... and both were great choices..: Mine was perfect: soft white bread, tasty chicken, the chestnut stuffing divine and the fries spot-on! Lunch in pubs I sometimes find can be a bit of a disappointing but not at The Fox & Hounds..this was just the job..swiftly served, beautifully presented and extremely tasty (and great value for money too)....and the interior beauty of this gorgeous old New Forest pub just added to the enjoyment of my catch-up with my friend..and I cannot wait to repeat the experience, next time I am in Lyndhurst with actual time spare for another tasty lunch..thank you so much! ?

We had dinner here on Sunday evening which was a lovely homemade steak & ale pie. The pie was very flavoursome & a generous sized portion, with spring greens, gravy & chunky chips. I couldn't finish mine so my husband had to help, not a hardship for him!! We then returned for lunch on Monday & had the greek mezze sharing platter. This was very nice & all fresh ingredients but would have preferred olives to the babaganoush as this was quite spicy ,but that's just our opinion. The pub is quite large but feels cosy & welcoming with a log fire & wonderful Christmas decorations.

We visited for the second time and liked this place just as much as before. A really good menu with food that was as nice as it sounded! The selection of drinks of all types is amazing and there are some super wines on offer. The staff are friendly and efficient and their welcome was as warm as the fire burning merrily in the hearth! The only mild criticism was that the kitchen was very slow to produce any food but that just meant we had more time on a very cold day to enjoy the warmth in the pub!

We like this pub and their Sunday roasts are very good and quite big portions but have become a bit too expensive, we are not going that much anymore. The chef definitely can cook, the roast beef is always nice and pink and the sauces are good. The desserts are nice but not special, my partner had a Bakewell slice that was small and cost £9.00 - definitely not worth it. My sticky toffee pud for £7.50 was nicer.

The pub is very nice, lovely inside, the staff were very polite and the food came out in good time but that's where the good times ended.I ordered the Ploughman's, which was described as a sharing meal, for 2.What you get is 1 scotch egg, cut in half, some soggy salt beef, bread that was wet, like it had been defrosted, a pile of wilted rocket and cheese, albeit a good portion of cheese. That was it, for £24 it felt like a big over charge and sub-par food.My mrs ordered a bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich, which was ok but nothing to write home about. All in all, the two meals, 2 drinks and 1 soft drink came to nearly £60 and I honestly can't understand how it can be justified, we've eaten better food, multiple courses for less money and enjoyed it more.Maybe we had a bad day there, I don't know, but with other options on the same street I can't imagine ever going back.

Took my daughter here for Sunday lunch. It really was lovely. Great food, pleasant staff and a lively atmosphere. We had our dog with us which was no problem even when he knocked the table sending the drinks everywhere. Although it was totally our fault they replaced our drinks free of charge with out a second thought. Will definitely be back and would recommend this place to anyone after a top notch Sunday roast

We had a family walk on this sunny Sunday over to Lyndhurst for a satisfying Sunday lunch. The Fox and Hounds a large pub in the centre of the village. It has a traditional rustic feel of an English country pub. We went traditional beef Sunday lunch and were treated to a generous high quality meal. I washed mine down with a Fullers London Pride. A satisfying meal in a cosy environment.

Disappointing. Can’t deny the atmosphere is nice. Been coming here for several years when visiting the area. Always had good food and friendly service. Not so good this time. The lad that took my drink and food order was great, polite and friendly. My dish, I was told, after paying, was unavailable. Changed to a different dish (£2 cheaper) and when this turned up, was incomplete. Ordered another pint and asked if my £2 could be taken off the pint. The young girl couldn’t make the decision. Decision? So had to ask another person. Did get a discounted price for my pint, but it seemed so difficult. Don’t want to be personal however it seemed the lights were on but know one was in! Not sure I’d go back again now although my HSB was a decent pint. So sad.

Lovely roast dinner! We weren't able to book a table but think that's because we left it too late, there were however plenty of seats in the bar area of the pub and we were able to order food to the table we had there! The roast was a mountain of delicious food! My partner ordered the burger which he said he enjoyed but he was rather jealous of the Sunday roast dinner after seeing how much food I got! They had board games to play on a table near the front door.

A bit lack lacklustre to be honest, service was very slow despite being the only table in the restaurant, asked for a copy of the children’s menu, on this menu stated the roasts which obviously weren’t available during the week but this is not stated anywhere on the menu. Food was excellent, but when asked for dessert menus the waiter completely forgot and we had to ask again. Just want to also point out that the Bakewell tart on the printed menu is £12.50 yet online it’s £9.50? So essentially 2 according to the menu would be £25, ridiculous.

It was okay, but that’s all I’d say really. Sadly the vegetables I was served looked a little sorry for themselves, the broccoli was boiled within almost an inch of its life and what was labelled a ‘side salad’ was a very small portion of pretty basic lettuce. The cod while beautifully crispy was lacking flavour. The chap serving, while absolutely not rude, was just so nonchalant, he seemed totally unbothered & lacked any apology when an item of the dish was missing. Atmosphere is okay. Had been before a couple of years prior and it was great so it was a shame. Wouldn’t return, just not good enough quality or service especially for the price.
