This is a wonderful pub that serves amazing Sunday lunch, we tend to visit when we are down on the south coast visiting mum and have always been served amazing hot tasty wholesome food at a reasonable price. They welcome our well behaved dog too which is a bonus.Thank you

There is no denying this is a beautiful olde world traditional pub with a welcoming fire on a cold, wet day. We had booked for lunch and on arrival were told there was a waiting time for food, unsure why because it wasn't particularly busy. The group on the table next to us gave up and left after a 45 minute wait, we hung on. I appreciate everywhere is expensive these days, but this is pub grub, cottage pie, faggots, burger and chips (biggest bugbear is the use of triple fried chips when they are not homemade) very basic, unexceptionable grub costing upwards of £15 a lunch, add your drinks on & for four of us it was over £80.Due to the waiting time we expected maybe a small deduction by way of apology? We do pub lunches with our friends on a fortnightly basis, this was by far one of the most expensive and we won't rush back.

A totally great experience.First off, I like the booking system, we arrived a few minutes early and were seated straight away. No hanging around waiting for a table. One of the wait staff was with us quickly to get our drinks order. This was followed up with ordering our food. The food arrived, and was wonderful. My wife commented that her veg was the best she’d had.. With my steak and mushroom pie was equally delicious, the inclusion of star anise was a lovely touch. We went for the Peanut and chocolate tart off the specials boards, a great choice.Lovely friendly staff, attentive without being intrusive.Highly recommended.

We came here for a family birthday and the waiter spilt coke all over my wife's new clothes. Literally top to bottom. She went to the bathroom and had to borrow a jumper. The waiter was apologetic, of course, and then the food arrived, which was all fine from there on. We then got a bill upwards of nearly £200 and not even a service dicount or free round of drinks or drink as a sorry. We did not want to make a fuss at the time as it was a special occasion, but we all felt upset and disappointed, so we won't be returning. To add, the manager did come over to check but showed no empathy. Where the waiters at leady did.

We were recommended this pub as a great lunch stop halfway through our South Downs Way walk. We're so glad we visited. This dog friendly pub provides a warm welcome and roaring fires ( we called 30 minutes ahead to secure a table)The menu offered a good selection of pub favourites. We started with some delicious marinated olives.Mains were Fish and Chips with minted, crushed peas and Gnocchi with blue cheese, bacon and pine nuts. Both of which were delicious. We had buffalo milk ice cream for afters- do try the salted caramel flavour. Our server was really welcoming and attentive. The pub itself is a shrine to cricket history and well worth a visit.Highly recommended.

We booked up for a Sunday lunch at the Bat & Ball as my wife wanted a roast for dinner,The staff and the service was outstanding very attentive but not too much and the meals were wonderful, the Roast turkey and trimmings were all very good and hot when brought to the table, as was the lambs liver & bacon, which can sometimes be dry but was perfectly cooked and again hot when brought to the table! The desserts were also very good, coconut rice ad the sticky toffee pudding, all in all a very satisfying tasty and enjoyable Sunday lunch time!Thank you all at the Bat & Ball,

Denise Crossman
