Fabulous pub and hotel. 15 mins from train station. Busy both nights I was there. Quiz and food. Hotel Room was lovely, Clean and a fridge! Always a nice touch. Staff friendly. Felt comfortable as a solo traveller in the area and sat out for a drink.

Having stayed a few times before I booked to stay again to visit family who live very locally I was welcomed by a lovely lady who was on her own and multi tasking with serving customers, trying to book me in ( I was very happy having a pint at the bar whilst waiting) And answering the phone for bookings. The bar became very busy with “ quizers “ so we decided not to eat but every effort was made to accommodate us. My room had everything the was required Very comfortable assessable. All in all I would not hesitate to recommend and I have rebooked for a family funeral stay over in a couple of weeks time

Wow what can I say apart from exceptional!! Quirky pub that amazed me from entering then service and food beyond a 10! Thankyou for a wonderful experience - we will most certainly be back. Outstanding and can honestly say this is one of the best places we have spent a couple of hours enjoying the company of friends and living life. Highly recommended

The pub and accommodation was exceptional, the staff friendly and welcoming. The double bedroom was was very nice and the bed very comfortable, the en-suite was clean and the shower was the best we’ve had in a long time. The pub downstairs was busy but the room was very quiet. Cooked breakfast not supplied but the breakfast things left in the fridge in the room were lovely and enough to start your day.

Highly recommend. Visited for first time today. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Food exceptional, best meal I've had in a very long time. Pub itself is a beautiful hidden gem. Only down side is it's too far away to be our 'local' ?

Nice pub off the beaten strip. Good food and lovely drinks on tap. Worth a visit if you take a little walk off the centre. Less than ten mins walk from the centre.\\n\\nStayed in the \\\"Small Double Room\\\". Room was a bit chilly and there was an annoying fire light glow on in the room. Building is cosy and quirky.\\n\\nStaff were all very helpful and friendly and accommodating.

A pleasant and cozy place. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the soup of the day for dinner. Very vintage furnished rooms and pub. Only pleasant impressions remained.

Love this pub! Lovely cosy atmosphere inside, great beer garden with play area for kids in the summer. Always brilliant service. The food is delicious. Really good options for vegetarians and vegans. And great to have a brilliant pub that’s in town

We decided to stay a night in Winchester after visiting friends in the City and a Tripadvisor search pointed us to The King Alfred - we weren't disappointed. The first thing to say is that this is first and foremost a pub, an old building with accommodation above. By definition it's not a spacious, modern, specifically designed hotel. It's quirky and has character. You have to get out of bed to turn off the main light for example - just like at home..!! Access to our room (number 5) was via a narrow staircase which at night was pitch-black and the sensor for the light in the hall only activated as we got to the top of the stairs. The rooms are adequately sized (infinitely better than you'd get in Paris or New York) and are decorated to reflect the location rather than to be pretentious. I'm going to start with the negatives which include the light sensor mentioned earlier and the fact that some aspects of the room are a little tired. For example the four cushions on the bed were faded and not particularly clean - they need to go, and the towel rail in the shower room was a replacement that sat over a number of holes and old Rawlplugs in the tiles. There was a bit of water damage to framed prints hanging in the shower room. The mattress was also a bit lumpy. It was a pity that although we'd booked a week before, the heating wasn't on in the room. It was freezing when we accessed it in the afternoon on a day that had minus temperatures outside. The electric wall heater made little impression and we used the spare blanket from the wardrobe to be warm in bed. By the following morning the heater had 'caught up' and we could shower and change in relative comfort. Okay, so after all that....it actually didn't matter........... The staff at The King Alfred were all really friendly. We had reserved a table for the evening we'd arrived (a busy Friday night). The food was excellent and good value, the beer was good (although my preference was unavailable). We played cards at our table and the atmosphere was genuinely enjoyable. We received a parking permit to use on the road, although as a word of caution, the parking in Winchester is really difficult at times although we were able to park right outside. The continental breakfast provided was excellent - granola, yogurt, fruit, some of the nicest muffins I've had and with tea and freshly pre-ground coffee to go with the cafetiere. Bottles of nice apple juice and 'fresh' milk was also provided instead of those ghastly pots of UHT stuff, from a fridge within the wardrobe. We paid £90 for the room in the centre of historic Winchester and despite some of the comments and observations made above, have no complaints. Far from it, The King Alfred is a good place to stay for a night or two to enable you to explore this City.

Mid-week supper and drinks with a friend. Ordered the steak which was cooked to perfection so hats off to the Chef. Rarely order steak when out but as being locals we know the pub well, never not had a good steak here. Cook it from blue to rare to medium to well-done. Lovely atmosphere and enjoyed the house white wine. Yes it might be a little bit pricey - steak costing £27.50 and wine spritzer per glass is £10 but well worth the money for a mid-week catch-up. We'll always come back here!

Had our office Christmas lunch here. Really interesting food, prepared with an interesting twist that was successful. Eager service and quirky surroundings. Our 3-course meal was £37.40 a head, which is top end of Winchester pub prices.

Fabulous! A charming public house with rooms with top nosh food. Cosy little nooks and crannies where a table fitted perfectly. Even though a full house, service was prompt and the waitress was excellent!! This felt like finding a little magic tucked away in a residential area next to another of Winchesters beautiful churches. Next time will look to stay over!

Booked the twin room for one nights stay. This is a wonderful character pub and the hostess is very friendly and welcoming. Good parking and just a 10 minute walk from glorious Winchester. We had a lovely time.

Nice Garden. Awful regulars that create a hostile environment. Twice now we've felt intimidated by the attitude of other customers that the staff do nothing about. Most recently, myself, the barman, and another customer next to me were left speechless by a group of who I assume by their attitude were regulars. Think I'll avoid from now on.

What a fab place to stay. The King Alfred has bags of character and we received a super warm welcome. Our room was lovely. The breakfast option is a wonderful touch. I would highly recommend staying here and when we are next in Winchester this will be our go to place. Don’t wait - book!
