I booked a table for 6 to celebrate our vegetarian friends birthday, our roast came with one sprig of broccoli one roast carrot stick and one roast parsnip. We had the option of buying cauliflower cheese for an extra £5 per portion. I asked for boiled or jacket potatoes as l am trying to loose weight, but was told this was not an option. Our vegetarian friends had two very small bits of nut roast. At the end of our roast l asked the table if they wanted to order desserts or wait a while only to be told no desserts were available. We were also cold .

It's no surprise this pub hasn't updated its Tripadvisor profile. I'd want to avoid the negative reviews too. It also makes sense why 'Jolly' has now been dropped from the name, not much to be cheerful about here. In a nutshell - management need to get their act together. We visited on a Saturday night where they had 1 person behind the bar and 1 person serving tables. Usually you could make the argument this is understaffed, but with only 4 tables eating food, it really isn't. This however didn't prevent absurd wait times (over an hour for our starters) and not once being asked for a drink. Admittedly walking to the bar myself isn't the end of the world, but it's just the absolute basic expectation to be offered drinks when out for a meal where food is ordered at the table. After grabbing a drink at the bar and being shown to our table, we were left for a considerable amount of time to review the menu and decide our orders. Only for the waitress to return and inform us what they didn't have in stock (it would have been easier for her to tell us what they did actually have in stock). Unfortunately both our choices for both starters and mains were out of stock, including an appetiser of olives - notoriously tricky and difficult to store. We both settled for the sirloin for our main only to then be told they only had 1 left in the kitchen. A this point I got up to go to the bar and settle the bill for the drinks, ready to leave and get a takeaway (I wish I did). However the waitress returned miraculously finding another sirloin. The starters eventually came out and to the pub's credit were good and filled us with optimism. This soon vanished when the mains finally made their way to the table, where disappointingly the chips were the best bit of the meal. Neither of us have ever experienced such bland steak in all our lives, especially over £30. Both swimming in water, fatty, barely warm and accompanied with sauces that tasted simply of milk. The sauces proved that offensive I refused to pay for them, which thankfully the waitress took off the bill. Frustratingly however, we found 2 drinks added to the bill which were ordered and paid for before we were ever shown to our table. Thankfully the waitress corrected the bill...again. So all in all, with the starters as an exception - the utmost blandest, overpriced meal I've ever experienced accompanied with the worst service and organisation I've ever had inflicted on me. Unfortunately this wasn't an isolated incident, as the group on the table next to us appeared to suffer the same experience - sending back multiple dishes to the kitchen after long waits and also finding themselves questioning the bill.

Delicious Sunday lunch but only 1 choice of meat. Received 2 small carrots and 1 parsnip for the veg! 2 choices for dessert. Very disappointing considering the price.

Popped in on the off chance after a trip to the beach. We had the dog as well and they saved us a table in the bar. I am a bit of a food critic and normally very critical but the roast Lamb was delicious. Perfectly cooked and lovely veg and roast potatoes. Lovely cosy pub, staff were very friendly as well.

Wonderful surroundings, lovely people behind the bar, full of fun but very professional.

Hadn't been using the place at all over the past few years out of principle since it was taken over by New Concept/Third Place Inns and re-branded. However, it is still our nearest pub and a lot of our friends still use it, so over the last couple of months we've been in for drinks quite a few times, including Christmas Eve, and had a very pleasant time hosted by the very efficient and hard-working, but friendly, Sally and Dio. There has also been a recent change for the better in the kitchen so we decided to eat there last Friday - really very nice (although maybe the starters/snacks could be reduced in size and price)! The Carbonara was absolutely delicious! Thoroughly approve of the new WiFi password 'JollysIsBack'!

Really lovely, upscale pub. The Sunday dinner menu was fun! Some of the veggies were really burnt though.

I've just had a lesson in how to not do customer service. My friend and are staying in the area and I did some research on where to have a Sunday dinner, and found an award winning Sunday roast half an hour walk away - result! They didn't have a website but we were directed to their Facebook page and today post boasted their roast being served 12-5.30, so off we trotted just after 4 and arrived at 4.37 (yes we checked) only to be told that the kitchen was closed and they only serve until 4.30.I should add that we had tried to call to book but the phone didn't go through, we had also, as their Facebook post suggested, to message them, and also left a comment on their post about booking. When asked if there was anything they could do, we were met with shrugs, and when we asked about alternatives they suggested a local Chinese or Indian (we were with the dogs). We decided to have a (warm) glass of wine in the gorgeous, very instagramable, gardens, only to be confronted by a pack of off leash spaniels who riled up our dogs, and a giant dog poo on the grass.A little too late I checked previous Facebook posts to see this wasn't the first time that they had issues with serving the roast, they obviously haven't learned from previous mistakes!

We went for Sunday lunch and our booking couldn’t be found, but they managed to get us a table for the 4 of us. Unfortunately there was only one waitress and she had at least 12 table to work. Took ages to get a drinks order and placed food at same time. Wax told 5-10 minutes later that the wine we ordered had ran out, also 2 further choices had ran out - these weren’t taken off the board. When we eventually got the wine we was told there were no wine glasses!! How does a pub not have enough wine glasses or wine!? Unfortunately when we received our food, it was cold -this was a disappointment- had to ask for the gravy a couple of times. They really should let people know that they had staffing issues and to check with customers that they are happy with their dinner. Hope there will be a change in the near future and will check on here beforehand.

So dissappointed. When we arrived for our prebooked table we were ignored by three young people who were working in the bar. I had to approach them to get attention. No welcome for customers is awaful. When we were finally taken to our table the waitress found us three food stained and grubby menus which were almost impossible to read as the font was so small. Fortunately one of our party managed to take a photo on his phone in order to read the menu. We waited ages for the waitress to take our drinks order and when we asked for a wine menu we were told there wasnt one but she could remember the choices. They had no alcohol free cider so we ordered a fruit juice and two glasses of wine from her memory. We then ordered food, two steaks and the lamb. My lamb wa nice but the steaks were not very good and considering the price this was unacceptable. We then asked for the dessert menu, there wasnt one but the waitress again had a good memory. We declined the options as we could not physically see a menu to make a decision. On the whole the waitress did well under the circumstances working alone between the bar and restaurant and she was very pleasant but very inexperienced. On previous visits we had a very positive experience with excellent food. The place has gone downhill significantly which is such a shame because this could have been a venue to go for casual meals and drinks as well as a special dining experience. My husband booked this for my birthday and his disappointment at the experience was sad to see. The owners need to step up their game and put this place back on the map and employ people who are experienced in hospitality.

Meal booked for about eight people on a Thursday evening. From start to finish we were made to feel very welcome. Staff were so nice and extremely helpful. The environment is very pleasant and comfortable to dine in. We were in a side part from the main room which worked well. Food was absolutely divine and served in a timely manner. Very well presented and tasted wonderful. I can recommend the salmon. There was a good selection of herbal teas and coffees for after the meal. I really hope the staff behind the bar and the chef are rewarded and stay working here. It's really nice to see our local getting things so right.
