Had a great family meal - food was very tasty and excellent value- we opted for their £16 for two course January offer and it didn’t disappoint. The staff were very welcoming and patient with our mum, going out of their way to find out some information for her. The service was slightly slow but well worth the wait and if we’d have been all adults we probably wouldn’t have noticed. Thankyou we will be back

We have been using the Golden Fleece for over 15 years and have to say this is our worst experience there. Six of us dining and a very limited menu due to low stock - food and drinks. Starters arrived incorrect, main course quality was poor and all dishes over cooked. The staff spent their time messing around and never appeared to clear away the main course dishes, and no deserts offered. We paid and left. We cancelled our further bookings over the New Year period and won’t be using again.

Great service and fantastic food and very dog friendly. We had a family of 11 and a dog that went for lunch, definitely recommend booking as it was very busy. Would highly recommend.

Booked in for an evening meal as a family of 5 on Xmas Eve. The pub had recently changed hands and as regular customers we were keen to see how it might have changed. The (brand new) website tempted us in with a ‘Festive Menu’ - 3 courses for £29.95 which sounded great. I popped in that morning to check whether we needed to pre-order, only to be met with blank looks and staff informing me that the festive menu doesn’t exist and it must be a problem with the website. Writing this review 5 days on, the website is still advertising it so no doubt there’ll be other disappointed customers. Really quite odd! As it was, the standard menu was just about ok but completely unexciting. We were left at our table for over 15 minutes with no drinks order taken. Although it was Xmas Eve, the place really wasn’t very busy so there was no reasonable excuse for it. We ended up ordering drinks at the bar which seemed to prompt them to come and take our food order. Food took 45 minutes to arrive and was very forgettable. An overpriced baked camembert with only enough dipping bread to cover about a quarter of it so we had to ask for more which then took an age to arrive. The other food was fine but not amazing and our mood had been somewhat dampened by sitting around for ages feeling a bit cross at the rubbish service. Such a shame as we’d have loved to love it but sadly we had a pretty awful experience and won’t be back anytime soon.

My friend and I went last night for cocktails. We must have had 5 rounds and at £19.50 a round they were not cheap. I am a polite person and when ordering I would always say please and thank you. The assistant manager was serving behind the bar along with another lady. The other lady was serving someone else but I had to wait for the assistant manager to clean down the coffee machine before I was acknowledged. I was the only other person waiting. I ordered and her response was £19.50. No please, No thank you. I paid and she brought the drinks over. 2nd order I ordered a seasonal cocktail and was told ‘you can’t have that’ her curt tone was almost comical we thought she was joking. That was our last round but as we went to leave we realised the front door had been bolted. I went back to the bar and asked how we could exit to literally be shouted at ‘SIDE DOOR’ A very polite man who had tattoos on his arms and a beard very kindly showed us where the side door was as he could see I was now very annoyed. I am local to the area, The Golden Fleece is a lovely bar with a decent cocktail menu albeit a little pricey. BUT I will not be returning to such an awful atmosphere. We were made to feel a hindrance and unwelcome. If you don’t like to serve people then please don’t be in the service industry. I may not be one of your wealthy guests splashing a lot of cash but the £100 I spent is as good as anyone else’s. I was also told they don’t take CASH and forced to pay by card.

Called here several times while on holiday in the area. Ate here twice and also popped in for just drinks. The food is beautiful, very fresh and tasty and served piping hot and a good price. However the service needs a little improvement. We say at our booked table for 15 minutes before someone came and took our order. I was about to go to the bar to order as wasn't sure if that was the process but apparently it isn't. The second time we ate there my husband actually went to the bar to order and paid at same time. On returning to table we noted that we'd been overcharged by £3.90. I went back to the bar and was given the only back but no explanation as to how it happened. We only ordered 2 Sunday roasts but it seemed something extra must have been added on. The drinks are pretty pricey here. £11.50 in this pub for our drinks, £8.80 in another local pub for the same drinks. I would definitely return despite these small issues as the food as very very nice indeed.

Lovely pub, friendly welcome by lovely staff. New menu, lots of choice, lovely food. We will be back. Dog friendly with a super log burner for cosy evenings.

Friendly, great value & awesome location We visited Wells yesterday for the Christmas Tide festival with our family. This time we ate in the Golden Fleece (which we usually only visit for drinks) as looking for something other than Fish & Chips on the quayside. The pub was packed but the lovely owner found us a table and then offered to move us when a larger one became available. On talking to him he explained that it was only his 2nd day since reopening the pub! Can see the difference already as the prices are reasonable and it doesn’t feel like you are being fleeced for being a day tripper. We enjoyed a selection of burgers, Doombar, mulled wine & soft drinks while looking out over the harbour. The staff were super helpful and nothing was too much trouble despite being busy. Wish the new owners every success and will be back at Christmas

Nice pub, very nice food and a good selection of drinks to be had. There is seating at the front and rear. Food came in a timely fashion.Update, one year later. Don't get fleeced at the golden fleece ! £6.50 for a pint of San Miguel is greedy. Go to the pub at the other end of the street it's £4.00!

I liked this place, they catered for our family well. Food was good and beer is nice. It’s a bit pricey but everywhere is in Well-next-the-

Not our first visit here, service and food was great. We love the 28 day aged steak with peppercorn sauce.

Nice atmosphere when they use the nice restaurant area upstairs with a great view; which justifies the sit down meal expense but we were sat by the front door downstairs, getting cold as the door opening often and many people walking by our table and the tv on at the bar. A good atmosphere also; but for a drink and catch up as many people were doing, just not for a sit down meal at £35ppThe chips were great, but the steak wasn’t cooked as requested and the quality didn’t justify the price of the meal. Chicken Katsu was average.

Friendly welcome with barman offering to bring drinks over, we sampled a few items of the menu which were very good, Great location with a professional and friendly team running the place.

Yet again, best meal of our holiday in Wells, Four different meals and four different desserts, all good. Staff are lovely, Only thing is the menu doesn’t change, so bit limited. I recommend the sea bream, crushed potato cake, pea veloute and veg, all looks a bit green and white, but it was fantastic. Yum.

Called in for late lunch and decided to treat myself to the special crab salad as Wells is renowned for crab and lobster fishing. The dish was £19.95 and was disappointing: it came with 1 slice of buttered bread. I don't eat butter so asked for it to be replaced with bread without and 2 plain slices were brought to the table which I thought was a more appropriate quantity. The crab was nice but the potato salad and coleslaw had far too much mayo - there was even a large smear under the bread. On looking at the bill after the event I noticed that we had been charged £2 extra for the 2 slices of plain bread. Not good customer service as this was really to replace the buttered bread that was not wanted and rather excessive for sliced bread. My partner's fish and chips was ok - but the batter was on the verge of being too well done and the chips were possibly overcooked. Overall not a great effort for £40 plus drinks.
