We have passed this pub many times in the past few months and decided to give them a try. We ordered beer battered fish and chips with mushy peas. The chips were fine, the fish in the other hand was extremely overcooked to the extent there was hardly any edible fish . We complained to the server who just said oh sorry I will let them know, and as far as he was concerned that was that. We overheard another couple making a complaint about something and they got the same response. So all in all very disappointing.

Very nice place to head out for a meal either in the restaurant or the bar.Not the cheapest in the area but excellent down to earth food. Very pleasant staff. Clean toilets. A very nice young man behind the bar. The assistant manager. He will go far. A really lovely evening. Thankyou so much for making us feel welcome.

We had a meal and drinks here whilst doing a walk from Malton to Castle Howard. We both had nice food, it was on the pricey side though for what it was. I was surprised my fish pie didn't come with any veg so I had to pay £4.50 for a side of veg-on top of £18.95 fish pie - which wasn't a particularly big portion, although it was very nice-as were the veg I paid extra for. Husband had the duck, which came with red cabbage and potatoes and said it was very nice. Dog friendly place.

Lovely Sunday Lunch with family. Friendly atmosphere, roaring fire. Getting this right when that’s all you want is lovely. They do it well here.

Came in for lunch after seeing (previous) good reviews. Staff and atmosphere pleasant but the food was almost inedibly salty, the pie was practically devoid of filling, their gravy (which is supposedly “homemade”) was made from some sort of granule. For some reason their schnitzel has preserved anchovies on (further adding to the already abundant salt levels) which isn’t mentioned on the menu at all, so good luck to anyone with allergies who goes.

Food good but not amazing. Great open fires and good atmosphere. Could have had more real ales. Generally worth a

Sadly I think this establishment is trading on past glories.Had the Steak and Ale pie which was desperately lacking in steak and ale.Filling was brown mush with tiny flecks of carrot. To be fair the pastry was good but the filling was so absent it could easily have been half as tall and still had ample room for the meagre contents.Gravy was described as 'handmade' which I now realise meant Bisto granules stirred by hand. Sorry to say the 'Chunky chips' were equally lacklustre and looked like something from a supermarket value range.Asked how the meal had been I expressed my disappointment and the young lad was polite, apologised and proceeded to bill us for the full amount.I'm sorry to say, I can't see us going back anytime soon.Pity as the pub itself and the local area are very picturesque.

One of the worst Sunday lunches we’ve experienced. Terrible for gluten free. One starter- soup, one dessert - ice cream. No Yorkshire pudding. No crackling with Pork. Roast potatoes so tough I couldn’t get a knife through them. Cauliflower cheese arrived with sauce completely soaked in. Waitress pleasant but had too much to do. Complaint was passed on to the chef without any acknowledgment. Will not be returning
