Lovely small cafe for drinks and bites. Didn’t eat (see menu/prices) there but coffee was nice. Ask for it extra hot ! Geared up to use card for payments ….they don’t seem to carry mush change for cash. Clean surroundings, friendly staff.

We visited today, with our dog Mia. Such a lovely warm welcome as if we were regulars, it was our first visit.Excellent chocolate cake & vanilla cheesecake which were both delicious, A pot of tea & a latte. We will definitely call again next time for either breakfast or lunch ?

Absolutely awful experience, quite upsetting. Visited with my mum and nearly 2 year old for lunch. Was greeted at the door by what I assume was the owner, went to get us a highchair, good start, though it stank of wet dog. My little boy wanted to look at the bike that held the salt/pepper on the table, so I took the salt and pepper out so he could have a look, without risking any spillages! The owner came over and grabbed it from his hands and said "I'll take that" and gave me a stern look, but then did come back with a coloring book (and a pot with 1 crayon that was usable). Assumed they were child friendly (had a high chair and colouring!), but nervous and didn't want my child to break anything, fair enough. Asked if they had a child's menu, no. Wouldn't even do a sandwich on sliced bread for him, no flexibility. Couldn't Ordered offer me anything. So I ordered a soup which I explained was for him so they could serve it cooler than usual. Soup came ame piping hot, and placed directly in front of him in arms reach. I had to move it so he couldn't eat it, but then obviously he got upset. We were all eating and he wasn't. Couldn't even offer him the bread as was a dry roll with no butter served. My toddler was now crying as he had no food. Lots of quite forceful notices up around the Cafe advertising 'screen free' environment - no laptops, iPad etc, so I darent even put any videos on for him to calm him down. The owner then came over and asked if we could get him to be quiet and asked if he wanted a MARSHMALLOW. Now anyone with any food training should know that they are a huge choking risk and not suitable for a toddler!!! It's a good job my child didn't understand, because me then saying no could have made it worse!!! Shocking. Eventually I left my meal and my mum and walked down to the co-op with my child to get him something he could eat. By the time we got back the soup was still too hot for him to eat. It almost felt like this had been done on purpose because they didn't want us in there. Toddler happy now and eating, so I could finally eat my meal, but was then greeted with a sarcastic comment about having our own food. If you aren't going to offer child friendly food in your Cafe, you need to allow them to eat a meal bought elsewhere or brought from home. The meals we did have were shocking. The soup looked like it was made from veg ends that should have gone in the bin and it had zero taste. The sandwich was basically mayo sandwich with little bits of weird tasting tuna on dry dry bread. Horrible stale crisps and a spoon on mayo and red cabbage advertised as 'coleslaw'. My advice would be, either welcome kids or don't. He clearly didn't want children in there and doesn't understand children. It was a horrible experience. And I know it was the place as my child has never got upset when eating out before ever as there is usually something appropriate for him to eat!! Also needs to use better quality produce for the prices!

Came with a friend for lunch. What a disappointment. Tuna sandwich on dry bread, why wasn't it buttered, and the cheapest tasting tuna ever. Was served with salt and vinegar crisps, weird, and supposedly coleslaw but it was a teaspoon of red cabbage. The burger was of cheap quality in a soggy bread bun. Also served with the red cabbage goo and a couple of slices of what were supposed to be slice potatoes. Also shocked to see they charge £2 for hot water. The man in charge was rude and grumpy from the offset so daren't even think about complaining?

Called in for a light lunch with family and was very impressed. The cafe is spotless and its nice to see a great selection for vegans/vegetarians and gluten free. It meant something for everyone in our party. Menu is simple, but top quality ingredients and all freshly cooked. The paninis and ciabattas were the best I can remember having. Portions were generous and pricing was more than reasonable , we all left very satisfied and impressed. Thank you Barkers

Wife loved her sausage onion and mushroom ciabatta and I really liked the bacon and sausage ciabatta, lovely soft bread and huge! Makes it all really good value. The staff were also really friendly and the young lad really conscious about the placement of cutlery and cups and handle positioning, so real attention to detail. Dogs allowed inside too.

We found the only unfriendly person in Yorkshire here! Two of our group of four were not ordering anything (partly due to complex allergies) so the two were told to leave the EMPTY cafe in case it got busy! The owner stood over us and spoke very rudely without an ounce of warmth. We stood speechless for a moment and walked out. We were almost glad though because the decor was dated and bland and did not reflect the character of this beautiful town. There is an abundance of other cafes and pubs in Helmsley, go literally anywhere else. They all looked beautiful. We ended up at Mannions. THAT was 5 stars. I hope someone with more suitable qualities takes over the business soon.

Nice spot to warm up after a walk around Helmsley, but food and ambience both very bland. The Moroccan “tagine” soup was horrible - it tasted like a watered-down can of Heinz veg soup with very little meat in it, and had no flavour at all, Moroccan or otherwise. The cheese and onion roll had no butter in, and big lumps of red onion. Cheap produce at high prices. We were also crammed into a tiny corner table. The owner seemed to be trying hard to be friendly, but came across as barely containing his contempt for other people asking for “just” drinks not food. The owner’s responses on here to other comments tell you all you need to know.

My family and I were asked on entry to this cafe if we were drinking or eating which we all found strange thing to ask, anyway we answered to eat and drink.we were shown to a table which was stuck in the corner and a very tight squeeze to get seated at some had to step on chair to get seated .There was six of us 5 adults and a 10 year old.food was ordered which was OK to good but what marred things was before we got food I wanted to pay so I gave my son inlaw enough that would cover the future bill .He wen t to counter an d handed over money to be met with sorry don't accept Scottish money was too much fake Scottish money going around can't trust what you receive, food was paid then by a card as my cash was dirty we the family felt disgusted at this and the way we were treated in 2023.

amazing food and value for money, really pleased with the overall custom however when it came to paying they wouldn’t accept Scottish money without any reasonable explanation as to why. when challenged about this at the end of our dine the person didn’t seem to bothered and no apology was given, in this day and age Scottish and English money are just the same and we felt as if we were being discriminated against. (would’ve left a tip but only had Scottish notes?)
