We have visited the Fox & Hounds regularly over the last few years, it’s one of the friendliest pubs we’ve found and highly recommended for great local beers, home cooked food and a welcoming and fun atmosphere. Jo & John have recently introduced lovely rooms above the bar so we were delighted to be able to stay at the pub for a weekend. The recently completed room had everything we needed, and Jo & John and the team made us, and our dog, so welcome. And breakfast was brilliant too. We can’t wait to stay there again soon.

Went here a couple of times. Large traditional pub with rear beer garden. Friendly staff and friendly, chatty locals. Good selection of real ales. Quite a large menu of traditional pub grub. The steak pie was hand made and cooked to order - individual pie with a good shortcrust pastry, served with mushy peas, chips, and a jug of gravy - excellent.

Just spent a week in West Witton and ate 4 times in this pub. The Sunday lunch is the best we’ve had in a pub. It included 6 types of veg. They made us and Oscar the dog very welcome. I’d certainly recommend it to everyone . We talked to a couple who were staying near Aysgarth and they’d been told to go to the Fox as it is the best in the area.

We just called in for a quick drink this afternoon and it was a pub, eatery full of character. Nice well kept ales and a loverly landlady.

John and Joanne are doing a great job, somehow retaining the character of Blackies at the same time as making the necessary renovations. Anyway, the beer and food are great, as is the warm welcome and cosy atmosphere. Looking forward to our next visit. Dog friendly too, not sure about cats!?

On a leisurely ride from Kendal to Whitby for a couple of days we decided not to stop in Hawes... Too busy for us. Glad we made that decision. This place is an absolute gem and will be one of our go to places even just for the ride amd the food. Great warm welcome, food is amazing (we had Sunday lunch) best bit we weren't looked down on because we were in our bikers gear. Turns out Johnny the owner is a biker himself. Lovely car park to the rear and a beer garden too. Those who drive by to rush to get to Hawes just don't know what they're missing out on!!!! Johnny took my partner to show him some of the letting rooms he's renovated and working on, apparently they are better than the ones in the hotel we both work at so will be back to sample them at some point. Fabulous hosts, fabulous food. What more could you ever ask for. Keep up the good work guys, we're spreading the word for you. John & Dawn

We have visited The Fox for Sunday lunch today.Everything from our initial phone call this morning was handled expertly!I rang at around 10am to enquire about availability and was advised that they could accommodate us at our preferred time. Both of us chose the beef and pork Sunday lunch, which was, without question, the best lunch we have had not only in Wensleydale, but probably ever.Generous home cooked portions, portions, piping hot and very tasty. The meat was very nice too.The service from all of the staff was excellent.I explained that one of our party was vegan, which often initiates panic or otherwise. Not here…..I was comprehensively told what they could provide, and what would have to be omitted, which was the first reassuring reason for choosing this pub. Often staff or owners aren’t sure of what is vegan and what is not. To find a pub as friendly as this, who know what they are doing, in the middle of Wensleydale was a revelation.Price wise, they are on a par with most other pubs in the area, but they are streets ahead of their competition in terms of giving the customer what they want, and making sure they plan to return.Well done to everyone involved, and make no mistake, we will be back. Probably next Sunday !!

Visited twice today, before and after a great walk up Penhill and then visiting Knights Templar’s Chapel. Made to feel very welcome. Marvellous sausage sandwiches and coffees to get us up the hill. Returned to great beers and an exceptionally friendly welcome. Can’t wait to visit again and to stay once the rooms and shepherd’s huts are available later this year. Thank you Johnny! We stumbled upon this pub and restaurant after a long walk. Whilst not a vegetarian I don’t eat meat other than poultry and was therefore pleasantly surprised to find a nut roast with all the trimmings of a traditional roast. My husband opted for a combination of pork and beef and whilst a fussy eater said the meat was good quality. The lunch was all homemade, with no Aunt Bessie style substitutes for roasties and yorkies that can often frequent Sunday lunches. The staff where attentive and knowledgeable, pointing out that the cauliflower cheese contained cows milk for my vegetarian lunch. Well worth a visit for a traditional home cooked Sunday lunch.

We stayed in West Witton for 4 days and couldn’t help but eat here 3 out of 4 nights; the owners are so warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere is wonderful, everyone here seemed to be enjoying it as much as us! I usually like to mix up what i eat but i ended up having the steak and ale pie every night, it is clearly homemade and tastes incredible. My partner got the cheeseburger stack twice and the chicken arrabbiata stew, and he couldn’t give them higher praise. There is a large selection of spirits and they have a good range of beers, local (and not so local) ales, and bottled alcohol. There is something for everyone! I’d highly recommend this pub to anyone visiting the local area, food and drink are both very reasonably priced and i can’t stress how much we enjoyed the overall experience! Thank you both for making our trip and our engagement so special.

Decent range on food menu, we had 2 different curries...Chicken Madras and a veggie Balti...both reasonable for a pub. Busy pub on Friday evening but super service from lovely waitress Victoria. Made us feel at home. Good ale with Theakstons and Black Sheep both on tap.

Really fantastic pub. Our party of 6 had a great meal and some local real ale. The kitchen went out of their way to cater for a dairy free diet. Plenty of vegetarian options and everyone said they enjoyed it.
