Just returned from a lovely four nights at Thornton Lodge. Such a peaceful, restful and relaxing place to stay. High quality throughout - large country house, beautiful grounds, exceptionally clean room with high quality fixtures and fittings and everything you'd expect of a 5☆ place. As other reviews mention, our host Vanessa made our stay special, with her warm welcome, local knowledge, quality breakfasts and interesting stoies about the house, it's history and it's renovations and upkeep needs.We will definitely return. Vanessa runs a beautiful B&B and really looks after her guests. The rooms are well appointed and spacious with very comfortable beds. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful, complete with homemade marmalade and jams. There was a lovely plate of fresh scones with jam/cream awaiting us upon our arrival which went well with pot of tea served to us in the lounge. The property was set among the farms in Thornton Rust and was an incredibly tranquil and restful place to stay. It was well located for us to do day trips all over the dales.

We celebrated our Ruby Wedding Anniversary in this beautiful house and grounds - complete with dog, chickens, ducks and wild rabbits, not to mention the robot lawnmowers! Bedroom clean and well-appointed. Excellent full-English breakfast. Above all, a friendly and helpful hostess prepared to go above and beyond. No hesitation in recommending.

We stayed at Thornton Lodge from Sunday to Tuesday morning but wish it had been longer. This is a beautiful house with a fascinating history and we had a lovely room overlooking the garden. Vanessa is a wonderful host and the room was full of lovely personal touches, including scones on arrival. A fridge was stocked with milk, cream for the scones and big enough to store drinks for days out. The breakfasts were excellent with homemade jams and marmalades and good quality ingredients. Clean, very comfortable with lovely areas for guests and seats in the garden to sit and enjoy the peace. Lovely scenery around the area and plenty of places to go. Vanessa provided a scenic tour route with information about various local places which was really enjoyable. Truly excellent, no hesitation in recommending Thornton Lodge - we had a wonderful break.

We have just spent the most perfect two nights at Thornton Lodge. Perfect room with personal touches. Vanessa is a wonderful host who obviously enjoys receiving guests and was so helpful and caring. We wanted a peaceful stay in quiet surroundings in the beautiful area of Wensleydale / Swaledale and were not disappointed. We can't wait to return!

Excellent two night stay in this superb country house. Built around 1909 it almost has a stately home feel to it. Set in grounds with ducks, hens and rabbits roaming free, it's peaceful and picturesque. Our room, apparently the smallest bedroom, was more than you get at the average B&B, combined with the largest bathroom there. The furniture is tasteful, solid wood and classic. The bed exceptionally comfy. The breakfast excellent, cooked how you request it. But the icing on the cake is Vanessa, the owner. She simply cannot do enough to make your stay memorable. Scones, jam and miniature wine in the room on arrival. Help and advice with booking evening meals and advice on local car journeys which turned out to be quite spectacular, particularly the drive through the Buttertub pass to the Tan Hill Inn. Vanessa is a gem and overall we would not hesitate to stay there again or recommend it to anyone who wants a first rate place to stay. Pete Allen, June 2022
We had a fantastic stay at Thornton Lodge. Vanessa (who owns it) is an excellent hostess and was welcoming all the way through our stay. The place is really clean and well furnished. Every little detail was thought of to make our stay enjoyable. Breakfast was superb and nothing was too much trouble for vanessa. We would highly recommend and will definitely stay again when visiting the Yorkshire Dale's.

A lovely large house that was built around 1909, in a quiet location, with large gardens to the front, restful outdoor seating around a large lawn. The house is decorated and furnished to a high standard in keeping with the period of the house. The house is situated in a lovely quiet country setting but very handy for many tourist attractions. If all the rooms are like ours, they are large, with lots of light, large comfortable four poster bed, nice garden and field views, with hens, ducks, rabbits and birds running freely. The bathroom was large and well equipped. Everything was presented to a very high standard in the rooms and throughout the entire house. Tea with scones, jam and cream on arrival taken in a lovely and comfortable large lounge. Good breakfasts throughout our stay. An excellent choice for a restful holiday in a large beautiful period house with friendly owners
