What used to be the Shoulder of Mutton is now The Heworth Inn.It is famous because Paul Newman, the actor, stayed here back in the day.Fabulous local pub with several rooms, a large bar area, bedrooms, and a car park at the rear.Very friendly, too. Highly recommend.Nearby activities: York City centre is literally 15 mins walk away and Monks Cross Shopping Centre about 25 mins walk away. It's a great base to explore all York has to offer.Walkability: About 15 mins walk from York city centre, so it is ideal for those wanting to sample all York has to offer.

Originally a very attractive late 19th century family house, with many interesting original features. The bars were refurbished a few years ago with decent carpets and seating. Unfortunately the bar walls are covered with TV screens in every available space. We called in the late afternoon. There were more TV screens than customers, and in addition to the distraction of the TVs, conversation was impeded by heavy punk rock being played rather too loudly. How difficult is it to just have a TV in one area ? Not a place for a relaxing drink.

Just back after a brilliant overnight stay at The Heworth with a lot of our friends.. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Great atmosphere too. We had en suite bedroom and breakfast. Everything you’d need for an overnighter and not far from the town center. We will certainly be going back ?Walkability: It’s about a 15 minute steady walk into the town centre.

Great space in the vibrant city of York. It’s about a 20 min walk to the centre of York or there are regular busses. Great atmosphere. Nice beers and friendly staff. The live music is fantastic with some really talented musicians playing.

I’ve noticed a lot of negative reviews pop up over the last twenty-four hours from a girl and who are obviously her friends who she’s asked to leave bad reviews too.I was a customer there last night, sat by the window, who literally witnessed the whole encounter. The woman told the girl that she has to buy a drink in order to sit in the pub (which is customary in any pub) and then the girl kicked up a fuss, kicking and screaming that she’s “only young” and “doesn’t know how to use a pub”. Seems to come from a very entitled background as she seemed absolutely gobsmacked that shouting and screaming at somebody doesn’t immediately make them want to apologise to her. She was also asking the manager for her name, which she is obviously not at all obligated to give. Was honestly a very bizarre experience. She’s also claimed in her review that the manager is racist, even though the girl was clearly white-British, so I don’t know what she’s getting at there. The review about the abysmal food also isn’t true because they’ve just re-opened and aren’t even selling food. My fiancé and I came in a few months ago when they were, and it was lovely.Anyway, the drinks were great and the manager’s lovely. Just sorry she has to deal with customers like that.

Stayed with friends and had a great time. Rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable. It had everything we needed including bottles of water and tea and coffee facilities.
