Pubs in North

“I stayed 3 nights in a classy, brand new studio apartment at The Star for The Harbottle Show weekend and ate at the pub in different locations: inside the main pub; the courtyard, and the breakfast area/restaurant in the converted barn.As I was on holiday, I twice had the nicely-cooked full English, a v light mozzarella salad lunch one day and a variety of main meals: vegetarian pizza; pasta with king prawns, and Sunday lunch. All were impressive, well-presented and filling, though the traditional pizza has a bit too much salt and olive oil and too big an uncovered, doughy edge for me.The First and Last local ales were a pleasant contrast to the bog standard big brewery beers of my local, the unusual Guinness was surprisingly good and the cold Birra Moretti hit the spot on the hot afternoons.Vegetarian options: A few interesting ones on the regularly changing (mainly Italian style) menu. Good chips. My friend had the Sunday lunch without the meat and complemented the chef on how nicely the broccoli, carrots, green beans and potatoes were cooked.Chefs v obliging (unless v busy, I suspect.)Dietary restrictions: Most can be catered for, especially at quieter times and/or when Karen is given notice.Kid-friendliness: The Star has different 3 seating areas in the main pub, where a dog or 2 can often be seen. Families tend to sit in the area furthest away from the bar. There’s a sheltered, flowery, roughly-surfaced courtyard outside and a separate quiet, dog-free dining/breakfast area in the recently-converted barn. Kids are allowed in most areas: the bar area is sometimes busy, is where a few friendly local drinkers choose to be and generally out of bounds though.Sweets, ice creams, cakes, comics etc are available in the shop.Wheelchair accessibility: There are large, awkward steps and doors at the front but wheelchairs can get reasonably easy access up the slope and through the shop at the rear. The toilets in the courtyard have a v small step and doors on a spring which need to be held open. Staff and the locals were keen to help, I observed.”
