This is the restaurant at Sudbury House hotel. As such, it seemed to have a bit of an identity crisis when I visited. The menu caters for the burger and chips end of the market and tries to offer find dinning options as well. That makes it feel unbalanced. The ambiance isn't great either. A big room that might be better broken up into smaller spaces to offer some degree of intimacy. The best table is probably the one overlooking the garden. Staffing during covid is an issue for this sort of establishment but I do expect even casual staff to know what the soup of the day is when asked. To describe what was offered as 'vegetable soup' was an affront to the kitchen that prepared it. Staff serving at tale do need to know their role is to sell food to those ordering. That said, belly of pork from the fine dining end of the menu was a good choice and well cooked. Presentation was good as well. The dessert was so memorable that i have forgotten what I ordered. Not sure I would bother to visit again unless I could be assured whole experience would be better.

Poor tdh menu expensive for what it was . quality of food nothing to write home about. Rib eye steak not cooked as ordered, no ambience and have had better food at a Premier Inn .

Very limited menu and hardly any changes.By and large the quality was OK but room for much more imagination

When we visited there were staff shortages and the waiting time was not good. However, the following night all was resolved and both nights the food was excellent.

Good food and excellent service with a well priced varied wine list. Plenty of distance between tables for those who still have Covid fears.

Went to Sudbury House for an afternoon tea back in July. It was so disappointing, not a special threat at all, pretty basic and not worth anything near the £21 they charge. I emailed the hotel at the time, they cited staff shortages, covid issues etc. We were invited back for a complimentary tea in September, as they were reviewing their menu. Went back yesterday. The scones were good, the sandwiches were very boring (cheese and pickle, ham salad, egg mayonnaise and cream cheese with smoked salmon), but we left most of the cakes. Carrot cake very dry as was the Victoria sandwich, small profiterole was very soggy and we didn’t bother with the chocolate cake. I was expecting a huge improvement, but this did not happen. I will not try again!!

Booked to sit outside on the terrace (didn’t even know there was one !!). Good service and well organised. Very conscious of the 1m+ rule. Very limited menu (OK if you like a Pizza and/or a burger at time of going). Expensive for what it is but nice food none-the-less. Could do without small children running around between tables though. It’s the parent’s ultimate responsibility but I wish staff would have a polite word. It’s simply unacceptable.

Stayed here and ate twice in the restaurant. I think the staff were very inexperienced and there were numerous small issues. My wife and I had the same meal on different nights and they were completely different ingredients. The barman got our drinks wrong twice and unfortunately dropped 3 glasses while we were there. It’s a nice restaurant but needs improving

I was torn on this one. We have eaten here loads of times and it's been lovely but this is the first time we've have been since things opened back up. It was my partners 40th and we went with my parents. The food we ate was lovely with one really disappointing thing: my mums main came complete with a small piece of cooked cling-film (clear but melted edges - she pulled it out of her mouth). We alerted one of the waiters who then spent ages trying to find the manager (the same man who struggled with his mask all night). By the time the manager came over he said he hadn't seen the plastic as the chef had chucked it and didn't know where it had come from. He offered mum a replacement meal after she had finished hers (she declined) and offered a free dessert instead (we had a cake waiting out back complete with candles). We really wanted my parents to like this place (they didn't like the old restaurant 56) but I feel it didn't show itself at its best. We will try again but not until they're settled back into things.

I have eaten here on quite a number of occasions over the years and we are local residents. I appreciate times are different now. However tonight (Monday evening) was disappointing. On your website is a sample menu with various different dishes to suit all tastes. On arrival tonight, we were presented with a very small menu which was basically a Sunday lunch menu. If I'd wanted a roast dinner then I would have come for lunch yesterday. There were 4 main course options - Roast Beef, Roast Chicken, Mushroom Wellington and Salmon. All with either roast potatoes/Yorkshire pudding/Vegetable or dauphinoise potato. The member of staff had said we should have been informed, unfortunately we weren't. He did apologize - however it certainly was not his fault. Why couldn't a few other dishes be added and take off some of the roast options? The only positive of the evening was it was the last night of the 'eat out to help out' scheme so we had a discount. However Sudbury House will benefit from this and receive the full amount of the meal. We felt fobbed off by a sub standard menu.

Ate here for our wedding anniversary as this is also where we got married 3 years ago. Everything was very covid secure - masks worn by all staff, sanitiser readily available, and staff keeping an appropriate distance. The menu was reduced (as many are at the moment) but both the burger and the chicken were delicious. Seeing as it was eat out to help out, we also treated ourselves to pudding and the brownie was probably the best I'd ever had, and I'm not a huge brownie fan! Service was great and it was nice to take a stroll through the garden afterwards and remember our Big Day!

We had two excellent breakfasts and dinners while staying at the Sudbury House Hotel.. The meals were of a very high standard and quality with imaginative presentation. The serving staff were very friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble

This hotel kindly lets the Folly Dollies WI group use one of their meeting rooms so I've been here a couple of times for that and was intrigued to see what their food was like. We went here for their set two course lunch for £15 and were pleasantly surprised. The welcome was friendly and the restaurant is tastefully decorated (maybe not the pink LED lights at lunchtime). The warm bread was lovely and the steak frites were tasty. However the fries were oversalted in our opinion. The desserts (brownie and crumble) were also very tasty. We will be back again when they change the menu to try something else.

Had pizza here whilst staying at the hotel. Four pizzas, all bland and a little salty. was excited when saw the oven, but it must be a gas oven and lacked the wood flavour. Dough was tasteless - maybe not proved for very long, or the flour maybe? Either way, this was not great pizza.

We chose to go here because it had great reviews. The atmosphere was okay, and the menu looked nice. The starter we ordered was not the starter we got... our drinks orders were wrong too. The food was to our taste quite bland and the portion sizes were small, too small. We ordered extra potatoes because there was no mention of them in our dish- but they did. The waitress could not confirm this when we ordered . We left hungry and disappointed not receiving the dining experience we’d hoped for. We won’t be returning.
