Gastropubs in Oxford

“Beautiful, snug cottage with a partially thatched roof in the middle of nowhere for those of us on foot, but well worth the effort. Large outdoor patio with seemingly dozens of picnic tables on the grounds, perfect for dogs and people alike. Inside, a fire burned on this Monday, with a sofa surrounding it, and several tables, some as banquettes, with a full view of the room. What a menu! The menu boasts a whole lot of vegan and vegetarian options, for those who need that, but for me the steak and mushroom pie greatly satisfied my needs in the typically turbulent weather. My partner's butternut squash soup was a delight as well, and we split the fish plate - the treacled trout was the perfect texture, and the mackerel pate was packed with flavor!Several casks in good shape at the bar, and mulled cider, and a very friendly bartender-server-host who also took us through the menu. On cask were a Hook Norton, Loose Cannon, and a local porter from Oxford Brewery. Naturally all were in fine shape, as was the keg cider.Note: it is a good mile and a half up a mildly-traveled road (bring your umbrella in autumn!) if you're walking - there's also a (sometimes) photogenic unpaved way along the river back to town, if you've brought proper footwear. And the ceilings are about as high as you might expect from an old cottage, so be aware, tall people!”

“First visit last Sunday but will definitely not be the last. The beef was superb and melted in the mouth. Wife had the pork and raved about the crackling. All the vegetables were cooked to perfection and we're plentiful. All in all the best Sunday lunch for years There is one criticism. We were so full after this that we just hadn't got room for the delicious looking plum crumble..”

“We recently spent three weeks in Oxford and this highly recommended pub became our local. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the ever changing menu was good and we tried many items from the menus. Our favourite being the mussels, fat, juicy and perfectly cooked, the fish & chip’s delicious, the steak for two perfectly prepared and served was amazing., in fact we were never disappointed with our menu choices. Gluten free beers and wonderful wine selection. A small shop in the corner is a lovely place. A great outside seating area with shady spots just the thing on a warm sunny day. We will be back. Thank you every.”

“Went here for a Sunday lunch. The service was great but we had higher expectations for the food. It was acceptable and we had a nice meal, everything was cooked well, but the meat was a bit too thinly cut and the pork crackling consisted a few flakes sprinkled on top. I thought we’d get more/better (for the price too).We also noticed the restaurant could be cleaner, there were food stains splattered on the wall next to our table, and large cobwebs in the corners, never mind an ‘attention to detail’…Vegetarian options: The vegan hamburger was nothing special. It was a bit tasteless, most likely reheated from the freezer. Where was the seasoning? Where was the flavour?”

“The food was excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful. They arranged great seating for us, the pub is quite large but different areas are sectioned off well so it feels cosy. The selection of wines and pint drinks was very good. The sorbet was amazing, next level good. The loos were clean and I would go ”

“The beer is great, keg only, and the food was really good. Typical pub menu of burgers and loaded fries, etc but excellent. Friendly and helpful staff.”
