Went to the Six Bells for the first time ever, enticed by their recent Facebook post about their new Autumnal menu. On first impression, it looks like a lovely, quaint country pub with thatched roof and cosy period interior.Arrived to find several items were off the menu, including the pork, the fish and chips and - to my utter disappointment - the beef casserole and dumplings: this was something I was really looking forward to trying as well, so the visit wasn't perhaps off to the best of starts. My husband opted for the ham, egg and chips, and I went for the sausages and mash. My husband enjoyed his and cleared his plate. I found the sausage a tad overpowering and very peppery. I managed one of the two sausages offered heavily disguised on my fork with mash and gravy to help it down; my husband helped himself to the other. The mash was OK (though I must admit I like my mash a bit more buttery and creamy), and I'm afraid to say the greens had no taste to them - loads of texture though. Maybe a few glazed carrot batons would've been a nicer accompaniment with a bit of tenderstem broccoli? The gravy, however, was gorgeous - deep rich flavour, which was heavenly. I can well imagine this with a full Sunday roast.Given the overall disappointment at the meal, however, I decided not to stay for dessert as originally intended before arriving at the pub.

Wow what a find! An attractive traditional pub in a lovely village setting serving delicious home cooked meals. Friendly landlord and landlady made us very welcome despite our late arrival after taxi delays. Also allowed us to wait (again) for our return taxi after everyone else had gone. If only we lived nearer we would return regularly.

Really friendly and welcoming service from everyone there with fantastic food - sensational melting Brie burger and beef burger, with loaded potato skins to start, and excellent brakesprears beer. Awesome thank you!

We went to this pub specifically for its location and Midsomer Murders connections. It’s a lovely pub in a great location . The young staff serving were both delightful . Two of our party had a very nice roast chicken lunch . However , my wife ordered what was described on the menu as a Vegetarian Tartlet . What arrived was a large Yorkshire pudding, a parsnip and a couple of roast potatoes. Thinking that a mistake had been made and they had simply forgotten to add the tartlet or that it was hiding under the large Yorkshire pud, I suggested we lift the Yorkshire to see if there was any sign of the missing tartlet. Nestled under the Yorkshire were 6 tiny shrivelled dried up button mushrooms that even James Martin could not have breathed life into. Slightly confused , we called the person in charge over. We questioned the missing Tartlet and he went away to converse with the kitchen. He was away some time but upon his return he rather abruptly told us “ that is the vegetarian option” (in a sort of ‘take it or leave it ‘ sort of way). As 6 denuded button mushrooms does not constitute a Vegetarian Tartlet we asked him to take it away and remove it from the bill. He didn’t offer any alternative or apologise that we were dissatisfied but it was taken off the bill. I had roast lamb which was served up lukewarm . The side vegetables were sparse and also lukewarm . The cauliflower cheese was hot but not a lot for 4 people . Overall we thought the food was reasonably priced but the Vegetarian Tartlet was nothing of the sort . DCI Barnaby needs to investigate this under the trades descriptions act , it was a dish well and truly ‘Midsomer Murdered’

The Sunday lunch was excellent, so was the service. Wifi was broken which was a pity (first world problems).

Although I have given the food 5 stars I have not eaten there. This rating is based on what I saw being served to other people
