First day of 4 and what a start. King room no 6 on first floor is spotless, walk in wardrobe, bathroom as clean as an operating theatre with shower for 2 and loads of off-street free parking. Had great meal and finished with the Yorkshire staple of apple crumble in a gallon of custard ?....

I had a short vacation near Woodstock last week with my wife and our dog. This pub is clearly dog friendly. We took an early meal at around 6.15pm Wednesday, fish for my wife, Angus 28 day matured sirloin steak for me. There were very few customers at that time. The fish was fine, but the steak was extremely tough. The waitress disappeared after taking our order and there was no mid-course check that everything ok. When she reappeared to take the plates away, again there was no comment regarding whether everything had been ok. I usually enjoy sirloin steak but this one was a long way from being acceptable. It was very tough throughout, as evidenced by the fact that here was between a quarter to a third which was completely inedible and left on the plate. I pointed this out to the waitress and asked her if she would advise the management of my dissatisfaction, and suggest to them that they consider changing their supplier. We felt at this point that we did not want to stay and asked for the bill. When she returned with the bill a few minutes later, I asked if she had passed on my comments to whoever was in charge, which she confirmed she had. At this point the pub was still not at all busy, and I paid the bill and left. At no point was any apology or recognition of my dissatisfaction made, by either the waitress or whoever was in charge, and I can only assume that the proprietors were absent. In this experience neither the food nor the service was at all up to the standard I would expect, and it rather spoilt the evening.

Stopped in here for a family meal today. Menu had great choices and food was amazing. My young son is coeliac and there was so much choice in the adults and child’s menu. A must from us!

Unfortunately, my experience with The Punchbowl in Woodstock fell far short of expectations. Despite booking a room, I encountered a family emergency when my mother fell ill with pneumonia, making it impossible for her to travel as planned. I immediately reached out to the establishment, offering to provide hospital documentation to support my request for a change of dates. Despite my efforts to communicate this on Tuesday before my Saturday booking, I received no response.Hoping for a different outcome, I persisted, believing that a direct conversation with them might appeal to their understanding and humanity. When I finally managed to get through to them, I overheard an extremely rude and dismissive conversation between a staff member and the owner about my situation. It became evident that they had no intention of accommodating me and were content to rely on their policies to retain the cost of booking. The owner's disrespectful and inconsiderate attitude toward my predicament was disheartening. Despite my attempts to explain that I did not want to cancel but simply reschedule, they remained indifferent. While I recognise the existence of business terms and conditions, I had hoped for a more compassionate and customer-oriented approach, especially as a local resident who has been a patron of their establishment on numerous occasions. The Punchbowl's promotion of being family-owned and operated seems to be a mere marketing tactic, as they failed to demonstrate any consideration for my individual circumstances. Based on my disappointing and disheartening experience with The Punchbowl in Woodstock, I strongly advise others to explore alternative accommodations.EDIT:Thank you for providing further insight into the reasoning behind your policies and business decisions. It was both predictable and unnecessary. For the avoidance of doubt, I understand the importance of protecting your business and I find it patronising to suggest that I don't understand the necessity of your policies. My intention in expressing my disappointment was not to question the importance of your policies but to highlight the impact of the handling of my situation on the overall customer experience. There is a distinction between upholding policies and delivering a compassionate approach to customer service, particularly in challenging and unexpected circumstances. It's the handling of the situation, rather than the decision itself, that led to my disappointment and the need to share details of the experience. Addressing your point about protecting the business, it's important to consider the perception of the establishment within the local area and the impact of community relationships. While policies are vital, finding opportunities to support local residents would strengthen community ties and positively influence the reputation and revenue stream of The Punchbowl. While I understand and respect the importance of policies in managing reservations, I still felt compelled to share my experience based on the hope for a consideration of extenuating circumstances. As a customer, I had hoped for a more empathetic approach during a difficult and unexpected situation. It is undoubtedly within your rights to enforce the cancellation policy; however, I wanted to convey the disappointment I felt in not being able to find a mutually beneficial solution under the circumstances. You may feel the need to try and suggest publicly that this is my failing to understand your policies however, this approach further demonstrates why there is a need to share this experience with others.
